This must have been already asked, but I didn't find anything with search. Anyway, I would like to have BIAB show the chord tones for each chord in the song, either as note names or musical notation (so G7 would show G,B,D,F). I assume this is possible, as BIAB does a gazillion things. Please don't tell me to "just go memorize all the chords/chord tones".
Additionally, if you can tell me how to do that, is there a way to only show *certain* chord tones? For example, show only the 3 (so G7 would show G,B). This would be useful for learning and for sparking creative ideas, I think.

Hi jodaboda, Welcome to the forums  BIAB does not separately give the chord tones in a simplified format as such. It is possible to open the Notation Editor or the Lead Sheet view and see the accompaniment in notation. The chords can be worked out from this. in the image below, the notation editor is the single note on left and the lead sheet view is the pair of notes to the right.  Once in either of these modes, it's necessary to click on one of the accompaniment instruments (P, G, S: that is Piano, Guitar, String).  This will show the music's notation for that track (note that not all Realtracks will have notation but all MIDI tracks will). The chord may or may not be obvious because it will notate the actual music being played. One other thing that you might like to play around with is the "Ear Training Game". This is found under the uppermost menu called "Window".  Click on "Ear Training Window" near the bottom of the menu that pops up. Hope this helps, Noel

This might help. BIAB has several styles that show whole notes. I don't have a PC with BIAB to check the names, but they are something like HOLDBOS.STY or maybe HELDBOS.STY and perhaps someone else can get the right name. They are in the Utilities style group.
I requested PG Music make these a decade ago. It is one of many features added that users have requested.
The chord shown isn't always in root position, but it should get you close.
If you have any doubt as to what the chord's name is, you can play the same tones into the MIDI Chord Detection dialog in the Windows menu.

Yes, thanks Noel, that's one of them. There's another one for Swing, perhaps SWHELD.STY or similar. What these styles do is play whole notes (or play as long as the chord lasts) but also have a drum beat, either bossa or swing. They are very useful for composers.

The held chords are pretty neat to use, but I was really hoping for a way to see all the notes in each chord. I'll start learning Notation Editor and see what I can come up with there.

If you are a guitar player, also check out the Fretboard View, which, when showing say a guitar part with chords, can also be helpful. There is a Step Thru command in the Fretboard view that allows for advancing one beat at a time and seeing the chord shapes on the fretboard.
Readers of notation can use the Notation View to see the chord stacks of any chorded or rhythm part.
Keyboard players also have the option of those keyboards at the top of the bb screen (unless you've deactivated them in Prefs...) to see the chords being played.

Why not memorize all the chords in all keys? That should be a prerequisite for a musician. BIAB isn't and shouldn't be a program for beginners. The majority of posters here are professials or semi-professionals who have been playing and composing for years. Questions like you posed are for beginners. Later, Ray

It seems like most of the newbees here have some knowledge of music. It's the ones who want BIAB to do everything for them that get me. To use a program like BIAB you should at the very least be able to name all the 7th chords! If the OP could spell out a G7 he should be able to spell out the rest. Wow - Really Ray? I often want to know "Just what notes does BIAB think makes this chord", and posted in the wish list for something that would reveal all because, first, there's always something new and ambiguous in chord specification and second, BIAB often jazzes up the specified chords in accordance with the style formulation, so it's just not clear in watching the BIAB generated parts.
To Jodaboda - welcome. The next best thing to BIAB showing you in the song file is to study certain styles the best lend themselves to letting you see what BIAB thinks. You have some replies naming some good styles for this. I like Pnosimp4 and 3 (under classical) It just pounds out a single sustained chords in the piano track with each chord change, plus a metronome-like quarter note beat for the drum. Boring and sparse - just what you want. And instructive to watch the piano part in Big Piano.
In PGMusic's program "Piano Chord Dictionary" PG's chord tones are all spelled out. If you don't have it, we'll hope it's in a bonus pak this December for you.

Go do a search for "Chord Dictionary" at this site (Top RH corner @ 'Search Site') I use the Piano dictionary. Program costs $19. You enter just about any chord. The program can play it back and lists all the notes in that chord.
But that's not all it does. Below is a copy of the help file excluding the excellent graphics.
(From the Pgmusic Chord Dictionary Help File)
The upper portion of the Chord Display Area shows the currently selected chord (symbol) in extra large type. Clicking anywhere in this area plays and displays the most recently selected variation of that chord.
The middle portion of the Chord Display Area has a [This Chord Contains] button. If you click on this button, it plays the chord in root position with the root at the bottom of the chord followed by the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th, and 13th. To the right of this button, there are two rows of text. The top row shows the Chord Scale Degrees of the notes in the chord (for example maj 3, min 3, flat 9), while the bottom row shows the actual notes that the chord contains (for example C, E, Bb).
The bottom potion of the Chord Display area lists a number of different Variations, or Voicings of the same chord. You can select (single-click on) any variation in this list, and the variation you select will be displayed on the keyboard. If you double-click on a variation, you will hear it play.
Abbreviations used to identify the notes in the chord are:
R Root
min Minor
maj Major
sus Suspended
dim Diminished
P Perfect
aug Augmented
Play (Chord / Arpeggio)
If you select ‘Chord’, the notes in the selected chord will all play at the same time. If you select ‘Arpeggio’, the notes will play as an Arpeggio, one note after another in quick succession.
Display (Note Names / Scale Degrees)
If you select ‘Note Names’, the notes displayed on the virtual piano keyboard will show the actual name of that note, for example D or C#. If you select ‘Scale Degrees’, they will show the note as R (root), Maj 3, and so on.
Volume Control Button
This opens up the Volume or Play Control panel of the standard Windows mixer. This allows you to adjust volume levels for the various sound devices on your computer. If you don’t hear any sound in the program, make sure that there is nothing muted, and that the volume levels are turned up. Specifically, you are looking for the volume control that affects the output of the MIDI driver you have selected in the Settings Dialog. This varies between computers and sound cards, but you can experiment to find out which one it is if you are not sure.
Note: You can change the controls that Windows displays in the Volume Control window by going to the Options menu in that window and selecting Properties.
Settings Button
This opens the Settings Dialog, where you can select your MIDI driver and change other program settings.
Help button
This brings up the help file.

Reverse Chord Finder
The Reverse Chord Finder allows you to enter two or more notes on the piano keyboard, and the program then displays a list of all chords that contain those notes. The Reverse Chord Finder can be turned on or off by simply clicking on the button.
There are two options when using this feature. You can either have it search for any chord that contains the notes you entered, or you can have it search for specific voicings. This selection is made by clicking on the arrow on the Reverse Chord Finder button, and selecting either "Show all chords" or "Show Specific Voicings".
To enter notes on the keyboard, simply click on them. To remove notes, click on them again. In this example, we have entered middle C and E. We have it set to "Show all chords", so the list contains all chords that have C or E anywhere in them:
Chord Voicings Selection
This allows you to narrow the list of chords to only include specific voicings. Solo – 2H (2 hands) are voicings that have the root in the bottom, and would be used, for example, in backing up a singer when there are no other band members. Trio – 2H (2 hands) are voicings that don’t necessarily have the root in the bass, and would typically be used when you are playing in a band with a bass player. Trio – LH (Left-hand only) are voicings that are intended to be played with the left-hand only, which frees up the right hand for melody lines or soloing.
MIDI Driver
This program uses a MIDI device to generate sounds. You choose the MIDI device you want to use from this pull-down menu. The specific drivers that you see in the pull-down box, vary between computers, depending on your setup (operating system, sound card, software synths installed, etc.). If you aren’t sure which is the best one to select, just try each one in turn.
Note: When you first open the program, it will default to the first available MIDI device in the Windows operating system settings (Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices | Audio – MIDI Playback).
Show Fly-by Hints
If enabled, text boxes with hints will appear when you position your mouse over certain items in the program. These hints also tell you the hotkey that is associated with that item.
Convert Double-flats / Double sharps to their Enharmonic Equivalents
When this is enabled, then whenever the following notes are displayed (either in the Chord Display area, or on the piano keyboard, the note names will be changed to their Enharmonic Equivalents:
B# changed to C
Dbb changed to C
B## changed to C#
C## changed to D
Ebb changed to D
Fbb changed to Eb
D## changed to E
Fb changed to E
E# changed to F
Gbb changed to F
E## changed to F#
F## changed to G
Abb changed to G
G## changed to A
Bbb changed to A
Cbb changed to Bb
A## changed to B
Cb changed to B
Display chord tones in different colors
When this is enabled, chord tones will appear on the piano keyboard in different colors. For example, all b3 notes will appear in one color, all #5 notes will appear in a different color, etc.
Root / Chord
These pull-down boxes allows you to select the instrument you would like to have play the Root and the rest of the notes of the chord. For example, you could choose "Acoustic Bass" for the Root, and Acoustic Grand Piano for the rest of the notes. You can also set the volume of each of the instruments using the two slider controls.
Note: The list of instruments that you see is the complete General MIDI instrument set of 128 instruments.
Arpeggio staggers notes at x ms
When you have selected "Arpeggio" for chord playback, this setting determines how closely the various notes of the chord are played together. You can enter a value from 0 (which would mean the notes are all played

I'd imagine there are a number of flautists, trumpeters, trombonists, classical pianists, etc., who are outstanding musicians and have no idea what notes make up a chord. Their instrument or technique doesn't require it of them.

From a jazz viewpoint I would bet that the majority of players know their chords. I know quite a few percussionists who are well versed in chord knowledge. There are always exceptions to most anything. Later, Ray

Many people are likely trying to use BiaB in order to LEARN more about music.
Band in a Box tends to get viewed by each user in a rather myopic fashion, the person who only tends to use the program for making recorded musics doesn't seem to be able to see why another user might use BB as mostly a Practice aid, yet another who uses the program only in support of Live Entertainment may not be willing to understand any of the above uses, and, as in the case of this hijacked thread, a user does not seem to be able to accept in a friendly fashion someone who wishes to use the program to learn how to play maybe one particular song or chord.
Maybe someone needs to learn that one new chord for an upcoming performance. Could be a Church P&W situation, could be a Garageband get together, well, just about *any* reason would be valid in my view. Here is someone who does indeed want to learn something, why knock them for not wanting to tackle "EVERYTHING" at this particular point in time?
While it is a necessary function for the musician who wishes to reach Journeyman class, not everybody is aspiring to learn how to play every chord. Lots of people enjoy music at whatever level they wish.
The attitude exhibited by some musicians often gets my dander up. Seems that musicians have this innate ability to declare themselves to be liberal and open-minded and all that jazz -- and then proceed to use that same notion as a license to be some of the most close minded people on the planet.
That said, I always encourage everybody who wishes to play or perform music to learn as much as they can, to practice properly, to expand their listening and thus their playing, train their ears, consider approaching a teacher for regimented lesson plan, the whole nine yards. Of course.
But the keyword here is "encourage"...

Very good responses everyone. Thanks very much Frank, Mac, and everyone.
To be clear, I am maybe "intermediate" (playing for two years, in two bands) and play saxophone. I am just getting into jazz, and am working on learning chords, and was hoping BIAB could be a tool to help me do that. Yes I know the 7 chords, but sometimes I just want to jam along to a new song which contains many other, more complicated chords/scales. If I could see the notes in each chord, I think I could learn the song much faster than just 'shedding for hours to tediously memorize obscure chords.
Ray is right that the correct answer is "go learn all the chords", but I am always looking for ways to make learning better, faster, and more fun.
The only way I really see to do what I want it to put LYRICS into the song with the scale notes. I would have to do it manually, of course, which would take some time for each song, and would prevent me from being able to just jump in and play. Too bad there isn't a way to script plug-ins for BIAB; I'd be willing to write that.

You might surprise yourself at how quickly you can learn chords just by looking at a chord chart. Just google chord chart for a wealth of info about chords. Later, Ray

I never did that. Memorizing every (or even many)chord types in every root just wasn't going to happen with me. I learned chord tones for each chord type in in a methodical manner, and then apply to any root.
For instance, I know if I play a C7 in my left hand (1 3 5 b7) and a Dm (think C plus one whole step = D) in my right (9 11 13), I can get to most chords. So for a C7b9 I play the C7 in my left, then flat the 9 in my right, and don't play the 11 or 13. For a C13#11b5 I play the C7 in my left, but flat the 5, and play the Dm in my right but sharp the 11.
So if I need an Eb13#11b5, I play an Eb7 in my left hand, and Fm (Eb plus one whole step)in my right, then flat the five and sharp the 11, and that's that. And I can quickly do that for any chord type and any root. No memorizing, no charts. I just develop a means to conjure any chord in C, and learn an easy way to apply that to any root.
Of course, this only tells me what notes comprise the chord, nothing more. How to express the chord is another thing.
It gets easier after numerous decades.

jodaboda, Nashville notation is also a really great way of utilizing BIAB chord progressions without having to learn all the chords. It's worth reading up on. There are some great videos on Youtube about it.
