On a list from 1 to 10 what would be the best powered speaker set up for in the home ?? I am looking to spend no more then $650.00 I was looking at the Mackie Thumps with the 15 inch speaker and horn . Is there any thing better then those Mackie Thumps for the $650.00 price range ? Lot of speakers out there not sure what to Buy .Can any one give me some advice or direction Please .

Greg

What will they be used for?
How big a room?

A 15" woofer and a horn might be fine for cranking the volume in a large room, but terrible if you are trying to mix with a pair of them as nearfield monitors. I don't have anything bigger than 12" in my largest room. I do like Mackie speakers, though, and mix with my 6" ones.

We need to know the answers to rharv's questions. What you described sounds more like something I would use outside as a PA speaker.

What kind of music?

I use the 15" Mackie Thumps for live performance and I love them. But as mentioned above they might be a bit overkill for an indoor monitor application.

Thanks for all the response. The only reason I thought about the mackie Thumps was the cost was good but i think you are all right a bit of over kill. Ok here is what i have .I have a room about 12 ft x 14 ft and 8 foot above me.I have the Zed 10FX Allen and Heath mixer. I have that going to my computer by way of USB .When i play my back round music from the computer it goes to my ear phones on the mixer .I have my mic pluged into the mixer and then the music and my voice all come out to the Ear phone connection .I would like to be able to sometime not use ear phones and just have speakers in the room running off my mixer .So i would like to know what would be the best set up for this with out going over $650.00 ? I thought about some kind of monitor speakers but i don't think they would give me the bass i am looking for .So i need something with good highs for my voice and some good bottom end in the room .I thought maybe adding some kind of powered sub woofer maybe and a pair of powered Monitor speakers or something in that order .What could i get that would not break the bank and give me a good over all sound in the room ?

Thanks for your support ,
Greg

I have had a pair of Tannoy Active Reveal reference monitors for over a decade and they still provide a clean, full sound. I even use them to jam along with my Aebersold tracks. They have and still serve me well.

I have been using the underrated Behringer Truth B2031A since 2007 with great results. Lots of reserve power and very, very flat from 50 Hz to 21 kHz.

Limit your search to near field monitors. Thumps and the like out of the picture.

You would have to stretch your budget a bit, but you might want to look at these:

They are plenty powerful, and go down to 42Hz.

Or as an alternative, try the KRK Rokit 8's ( http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Rokit8G2/ ). I've been using these for about a year and have been impressed. Pretty flat across 44Hz to 20kHz and the front firing port seems to help with placement in the corners and against walls. Besides, they'll save you $150 on your budget.

Yeah, those are nice, and priced right. I like the front porting as well. My old Event 20/20's are front ported, and that really helps in a small room.

My suggestion
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/BX8D2

Mine are a couple years older (earlier model) but these new models seem well reviewed also.
In a room that size these speakers at half volume would be plenty loud.
I like 'em.

I have the BX5a's too, also have the SBX10 sub... the sub really makes all the difference.
They're great sounding monitors! You might still be within your $650 budget with the sub added on.
