I have BIAB 2011.
What I want to be able to do is use Galaxy Vintage D (a piano that works within Kontakt) while jamming along with band in a box songs.
So the drum, bass, and other stuff would have to be coming from band in a box and then I would want to load the kontakt vst to play my galaxy piano.
I have been able to load kontakt within band in a box, but then I can't hear drums, bass, etc... which is obviously not coming from kontakt.
also, how do I set different midi channels for the different instruments that load up during a song?

I don't think that older version of BB can handle multiple DXi synths, unfortunately.
You would have to use a DXi stynth that has a GM bank in order to have it play all the instruments in a songfile.
There are DXi snth options included with the Band in a Box installer, note that different ones work on different Windows Systems, the good old Roland/Edirol VSC sound canvas works with XP, the Coyote works with Vista and forward.
There might be a way to get your Kontakt to work with rechanneling, though.

I use Kontakt5, too. You have to load Kontakt instruments for each instrument slot in Biab separately. This is possible since Biab 2012, I think.
So, what I did in achieving what you want is:
Go to VST/DX Synths/Settings
(The Default Synth shows up - leave that one as it is!)
Click on the "Thru" button
Click on the upper "None" combo line under "Plugin" on the right hand side
Choose your Kontakt synth (the "16out" version!)
The Kontakt window shows up.
Load your instrument within Kontakt.
For me that was all. Should be the same for you. The other instruments load with the default synth.
I have some songs with up to 3 Kontakt instruments loaded. But you need a rather fast system for this. The Kontakt instruments need a lot of the computer's resources. That's why they sound so good.

I don't even think I have that many kontakt instruments. I have the free pack that came with the kontakt player plus the galaxy vintage d I bought. But I found that I can use real tracks instead of midi and still play the vintage d at the same time so that'll work.

Ulrich Hello Ulrich, I am tryin to load a Kontakt instance for the BASS on the BIAB first channel, but I cannot get it to respond to the midi data recorded on the track. - I have import/open a midi file (multitrack) - then move the midi channel 16 of the bass to the BASS channel on BIAB - asign a VST Kontakt instant to that channel but it do not receive the midi recorded. ANy help is appreciatted, THANKS
