I'm looking through some old Aebersold books and found a couple of chords I'm not sure how to translate into BIAB...

C7+4 - Is it C7+ or C7b5?
C7+9 - Is it C9+?

Thx

Abersold books often show you the scale so you can see whether they mean the plus sign as 'sharp' or 'add', in context. Look at the song(s) where these occur, and they may have a few bars showing blowing scales.

This is why I don't use a plus sign.

Just guessing, I would probably pick C7#11 for the first, and C7#9 for the second. But who knows?

Which book? If I have it, I can give a better answer.

The song is A Time For Love from the 'Round Midnight book. The melody is no help as far as the chords go (of course). Listening to the CD that came with the book, I'm not sure those chords are the same as what is written in the book. If you have both, maybe you could give it a listen and tell me what you think? The chords in question are C7+4 (measure 4), A7+9 (measure 19), and D7+9 (measure 20)

I still am fascinated by the #9 and #11 chords. Love it.

Thanks!

I'm sorry, but I have neither here. Been many yarin since I messed with the Aebersol stuff, but gotta say it is a great learning tool.

Those are certainly going to be passing chords, though, especially the 4th measure of that tune, there's a small myriad of subs that will work in there, too. Thinking about it, that C7+4 notation may be trying to indicate a C7sus you might try that and see if it sounds like it.

The two +9 chords, I'm hoping to you-know-what it is not trying to say a mere A9 or D9 there, but it might be, all I can say from here is to try things like that on your keyboard as the recording plays and see if you can use your ears to sort it out.

Seven Sharp Nine in jazz is often rather dependent on Voicing, this is one chord where simply adding all notes into Closed Chord stack typically sounds terrible in jazz. For C7#9 try this Voicing: C in the bass and RH plays E-Bb-Eb. Often used in passing chords, great sub to put the E7#9 as the second chord in the opener to Misty, typically the second time around. Nice.

I have a chart for this from the Realbook 3.

The chord in bar 4 is C7#11.

The chords in bar 19 are Fmaj7, A7#9.

The chords in bar 20 are Dm7, D7b9.

If you would like a PDF of the chart, just PM your email address.

Bill Evans' chords to "A Time For Love" are different from the standard version. I have a copy somewhere. As soon as I find the sheet I'll post them. In the version I have he starts in D and goes to Bb for the solo. Later, Ray

I found an Aebersold book which explains it...

C7+4 can also be played C7+11 or C7b5. In BIAB, either C7#11 or C7b5.

C7+9 can also be played C7 Alt, C7+9+5, or C7b9+4. In BIAB, C7Alt or C7#5#9 or C7b5b9

Thanks all
