After applying the RT update to day the Harmonizer has not been working correctly. When trying to harmonize a vocal track, the harmonizer replaces the audio track with silence.

After attempting some adjustments and prevailing not, I did the "Reset to Factory Settings" thing.

When I enabled my Focusrite Safire BIAB asked if I wanted to convert the vocal track to mono. I answered yeas.

After the conversion things worked as expected. However when recording a new vocal the same thing happens with the harmonizer -- it replaces it wit silence and I have to repeat the above.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi Robb,

Have a work through the Tutorial #14 found under the "Help" menu. This will help isolate which step is not working.

To open the tutorial song "Listen.MGU", navigate to the "Tutorial - Audio Harmonies" folder in the x:\bb directory.

I've just worked through this tutorial and it worked fine. I used the following settings.

Hope this helps,
Noel

P.S. I have BIAB ver. 2013 and have installed all the latest updates, including the one you mention as having caused the problem

Also a good idea to check your Focusrite's internal control settings.

Make sure that it is not locked to a different bitrate/depth than BiaB's native 44.1/16. If it has a setting that allows host software to determine bitrate, try that setting instead of locked settings.

If using ASIO sound drivers, make sure that BB is set to "ASIO always on" checkbox, too, and that another audio program is not open at the same time and trying to use the ASIO drivers.

Thanks for the advice Noel. I have been using the harmonizer for a while and am familiar with its control. This didn't happen until I applied "simplified RT" update. Strange, as I don't think the update would change any harmonizer settings.

@Mac: I don't think it the Focusrite's settings. The box automagically adjusts to the input application's settings.

It may have something to do with the stereo settings. My vocal is recording to the right channel. When BIAB converts the track to mono, all is well. Does the harmonizer require a mono setting?

Not really. When I tried to record a new audio track, I got nothing but silence.

The VU meters are showing an input, yet nothing is being recorded.

Setting the track back to stereo did not help. Applying "Factory Reset" no longer works. I have rebooted the computer.. restarted the Focusrite.

Nothing on all tries.

All is working in RealBand and Sonar. It seems to be BIAB

Robb,

Have you tried BIAB with the MME setting and your computer's internal soundcard? Doing this would help determine whether it's BIAB or BIAB's interface with your Focusrite device.

Regards,
Noel

I have no mics with a 1/8" input to try that. I could try to sing into a pair of cheapo phones using MME.

Robb,

All you need to do is use the "Listen.MGU" file that I mentioned above. That has audio attached to it.

That was one of the reasons I suggested working through the tutorial mentioned.

Noel

Noel,

The song "Listen" plays and harmonizes expected (Still using ASIO). However when I tried to overdub the track, no audio was recorded. The input VU meters showed a signal but the result was empty.

Hi Robb,

Have you double-checked your Audio Playback settings? Mute might be active or the volume set very low. (It would be unusual for this setting to be different when "Listen" works ok. Still worth checking, though.

Some other thoughts.

1. Have you checked the volume level of your recording input in Windows Control Panel?

2. If you are using ASIO, is there another music program open that might be taking precedence over BIAB's using ASIO?

3. Have you tried re-booting your computer (rather than going into standby mode). I've found that sometimes my computer gets confused (with audio input in particular) and a reboot solves the problem.

Regards,
Noel

1. Playback settings... [√] volume at 127 (way past 11)
2. ASIO Sharing... [√] Both Real Band and Sonar use the drivers but neither is open.
3. Reeboot... [√] complete power-down reboot

BIAB thinks it is recording something. The VU meters are active and the correct .wav files are produced. However, they contain only silence.

Strange thing is the same driver/settings works in Real band, as does the harmonizer.

Hi Robb,

Well, we're narrowing it down

As an experiment ...

1. Record some audio using BIAB.

2. Save the project (say something like "test.mgu").

3. Open the audio wav file (test.wav) in Sonar or Realband and normalize it. This will help confirm that there is indeed no audio data being written.

Something that caught me very early on with recording was that there was actually audio data present but it was so quiet that it could neither be seen nor heard in a DAW. Once I normalized it, it was obvious the recording was present.

If the track is silent once it's been normalized, then BIAB has certainly not recorded anything. That helps isolate the problem even more.

Also, have you tried recording with MME rather than to see if it makes a difference? (Latency will be annoying but at least it identifies something else that does or doesn't work.)

Regards,
Noel

Normalized in Audacity

listen: test.wav

hmmm...
I can hear a hint of the clapping I did, I think.

Both the Saffire's VU and BIAB's VU meters were indicating a hot signal.

The Saffire has no MME drivers for Win7 64bit, so I cant test it that way. Though I have several mics, I do not have a 1/8" mini mic to test the built in RealTec sound card.

I thought I could hear that hint of clapping too.

Out of curiosity, what are your audio input/ouput? Below is an image of mine.

Also, for what it's worth, here are my other settings just in case they're useful.

Your device is set up such that ASIO runs in Stereo Pairs. Many do just that as it is actually part of the ASIO standard to have Stereo Pairs, each selected as a pair at a time.

It may be that you will have to record in Stereo, or it may be that there is a setup issue that you have to get through, don't know that particular sound device's controls well enough to say.

Have you tried recording the Mic to both of the two selected channels as stereo first?

**Also, are you certain that your mic is physically connected to the same Input that is currently highlighted and thus selected? **

Robb,

I've just been re-reading through this thread. I noticed that you mentioned that your vocal is recording to the right channel. Have you tried setting it to record to the left channel. I have a vague recollection that I read many years ago that "mono" usually defaults to the left channel. (Realband has the option to set mono to left or right. Since BIAB does not have this option, it may well default to left.)

Also, in answer to one of your earlier questions, when I looked up TC Helicon in "Help", it mentions that the input must be mono.

Just to clarify ...

The original problem was that audio could be recorded but when it was harmonized, there was silence. Then a second problem seemed to develop in that when audio was recorded only silence was heard on playback even though the VU meters showed activity during recording. Can you still set up your Focusrite so that you can record stereo audio into BIAB?

Regards,
Noel

Well I am about to uninstall 2012 and install 2013 (I was looking for an excuse to purchase it). I guess if the issue continues after that point, I'll know it is an interface problem. If not, who knows. I'll report back.
