Seems that there are several versions ( http://www.musitek.com/editions.html ). Could be the "holy grail" if it works, but I have always heard that its not 100% accurate and that addition post-conversion work is needed. Here's a video of it in action: ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pjLsQJHwdM )

hi
i used it when it first came out,first thing was you had to have a scanner that was very compatible the music you was scannig had to be very dark and not to amall and i found you had to do to much editing it was almost as quick to copy it free hand,that said it maybe totally different now as i used it a few years ago and maybe much better now i just don`t know

That's been my experience with alleged music scanning programs, too, Dave. I think if there were a standardized font/format that everyone used, it might be possible some day, but don't hold your breath.

How well Smartscore works depends on what it is you want to do.
If you want to translate printed page into the computer and be able to manipulate notes, durations, rests or the like, it can represent a good shortcut to having to start from scratch.
Use of Smartscore to get the basics of a scoresheet into a music writing program such as Sibelius or Finale, by importing the scanned music sheet as a MIDI file, for example, then turning that into a full orchestral or band arrangement is one way to use the program.
On the other hand, if you are thinking that you can scan a sheet of written music to be used for playback as a MIDI performance score, be advised that there are many parameters that the music score does not cover. These things are added by the trained musician who can read and interpret and then play. In other words, there would likely be a lot of editing of a MIDI file scanned from sheet in order to get a convincing playback.
But playback isn't really what the program is designed for, it is for getting already printed music into the puter for the purposes of working with that to create ---- more sheet music.
And those who are thinking they can use it as a substitute for learning to read music are also likely to be disappointed. You have to be able to check the results and often have to go in there and edit a few missed or misplaced notes, rests, etc. from time to time.
