Hi All!
I am really enjoying the new features in BIAB since I first started using it way back in 2008. The program has come an incredibly long way since then. Since the implementation of "Real Tracks and Real Drums" I have been constantly trying to find new and more creative ways to incorporate these into my own personal recordings.
One aspect of this that I haven't yet been able to figure out is, "micro-editing" of the Real Drums!
What I'd like to do is be able to import specific samples of the drum tracks (rolls, cymbal crashes, 1-2 measure beat variations, etc) and export them into a song that has already been imported into my DAW. The drum tracks sound fine as they are, but I could be a lot more creative with specific ideas I have musically if I had the ability to "micro-edit" these Real Drum tracks.
If this is possible, I'd love to know how I can accomplish this, so anyone with "experience" in this area of Real Drum editing please respond.
Thanks so much.
Harpo

For each RD, there are two files associated with it - .txt and .wma (or .wav). The wma is the actual audio drum track that is used to generate what you hear. The txt contains an index to that audio. If you examine the txt file, there are pointers to intros, endings, 'a' section, 'b' section, etc. You could load the entire wma into your DAW and extract pieces that you like. BIAB has a developer checkbox in the RD settings that will give you a report of how the RD output for a generated song was constructed using the txt file. Check in a RD folder and you should see these. A tutorial is found HERE

I have also found that adding some Percussion on a MIDI track can create a track that can be used alongside a Realdrums track.
All depends upon the sounds you have available from whatever you have to use for the MIDI synth.
The trick is to not try to use this as a substitute for the RealDrummer, as it is unlikely that the sound of Snare or Tom or Kick would match the tonality. Sometimes, you can double the Kick with a MIDI kick patch, get that BIG hardrock bump goin' on down there.
But adding Percussion using MIDI, one can la in quite an assortment selection of Ear Candy.
Congas, Bongos, Timbale, Triangle (Open to Closed triangle can often spice up certain beats), whatever.
Sometimes MIDI cymbals can also be added to play alongside of RealDrums track, and can work because the Realdrummer just might have another cymbal on a stand to hit and it can be blended in, depending of course on a few other parameters.
I find that the easiest way for me to generate MIDI Percussion stuff is to use my MIDI keyboard along with the Instrument Map for the Percussion Bank being used. Find the two or three piano keys that fire the desired Percussion sounds, arm a track for recording MIDI and, after a few practice passes to get the gist of whatever it is that I must do in order to tap along, record to MIDI track.
And, of course, use the Mixer plus all the other tricks learned from mixing to blend it all into a good mixfit.
When Realdrums and Realtracks first came out, many of us noticed how much more realistic the sound of a MIDI track or two becomes when played alongside those Realtracks.

If you want specific drums (samples) to work with, at the end of the actual realdrums audio recording (the wma mentioned above) you can often find individual hits of the snare, toms, cymbals, etc used for the recording These can be used to micromanage a realdrum truck when copy/pasted.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

This is one reason I love the Smart Loops Pro Drum Works stuff, all of the Crash Hits are left out of the loops, allowing you to place them where needed. I need to dig back into the raw Real Drum tracks again & play some more.
Thanks for the reminder!

I too would like to be able to add crash hits where I want them. I could add them using midi, but I think the midi sounds would probably sound different than the real drums.

I use those but instead of copy paste I roll my own RDs.

Thanks Everyone for your replies!
Rachael, I think your suggestion best matches what I'm trying to do here. It's not just endings that I'm interested in importing into my drum tracks. There are lots of little fills, rolls, flams, etc, that go on during the Real Drums drum performance that I'd like to manipulate into various parts of my "edited" performance. Having the whole wma file at my disposal would be a great way of picking and choosing what I want quite easily. Damn, I could even create my own library of 1, 2, 4, or even 8, measure drum samples similar to the "Smart Loops" sample format to use at my disposal!
This will take a bit of time, but I can "create as I go" so to speak.
I think this will work out just fine!
Thanks again everyone for your input.
Happy New Year!
