I have a MIDI file I am trying to import to Band in a Box 2013. The accompanying screen shot shows the first four bars. This is a hymn (Nearer my God to Thee) in typical four part harmony. As you can see, the bottom two notes of most chords need to be in the bottom or bass clef. The problem I am facing is that at present I don't know how to get it to do an intelligent split of the voices into a treble and bass clef. The file comes in all in the Melody track. I suppose, it needs to make it to the Piano track eventually. Y/N? I'm just wondering what the easiest way of doing this is. Will BB make an intelligent guess at the split point. Will it import to the piano track. If not, can I copy stuff from the melody track to the piano track. Will Band in a Box read music XML (.mxml) or some other generic file format? Or, is it possible when creating the MIDI file to tell it ahead of time which notes should be in which clef? It would be a real boon if I can easily bring in MIDI files with easy to handle split points. Can I? [image]  Uploaded with ImageShack.us[/image]

In Notation View, hit the Opts button.
In the Options window, center column about two thirds down, is a place to designate the Split Point manually. Default will be likely C5 (for middle C on most MIDI keyboards, but some may call it C4).
Change that split point to suit the file. In this case, try setting the manual Split Point to D of the same octave number, forcing any note below D to be shown in the Bass Clef staff.

Well, I may be experimenting with something that may not have a big enough payback. As per your suggestion and sure enough, changing the split point from the original C4 to C5 solved many of the problems, but not all. There is just enough editing to take place as to make it less than a pleasant experience.
Not to tout another program (Bank in a Box in invaluable) but Sibelius, for example gives you a choice at the time of import of setting the split point to Fixed, or Automatic. I don't know how Automatic knows what to do, but it does, and brings the file in reading like it does in the original. It may be that the MIDI file itself has this information in it, I don't know.
I guess I was thinking that if I had a piano part with these chord changes in them, I could then embellish it somehow with BB and then play along with it in a way that is more pleasurable that cold and by itself. It may be, however, that my goal is not practical - unless someone else has some other ideas.

I use Sibelius also.
Here's the deal, Sibelius is a wonderful Music Notation program. Kinda not so wonderful at playback, but the kind of playback it does do is useful for checking you work and that's about it.
Band in a Box is a wonderful Autoaccompaniment program. Kinda just okay as a music notation program, but the quick note entry method makes it my first goto when all that is needed is a quick fake chart.
Just two different tools for different jobs IMO.
But I'm the kinda mechanic who won't hesitate to use the other end of the ratchet handle as a small ball peen hammer sometimes, right?
Actually, my friend, if I had known that you could find "GOOD" MIDI file examples of those hymns, I would have told you -- and likely provided a hotlink. I went thru looking for such at one time, disappointment reigned.
Nothing like the Source, though, those old printed hymnals are invaluable sight reading aids. And, will prepare you better for what you are more likely to find "out there in the real world" right? Likely to be print and paper, no built in metronome, no highlighted notes.
Don't neglect playing those keyboards by ear as well. I think it requires a certain amount of both skills to become a good reader. There are many times when I'm called to play an accompaniment off of some sheet for a singer, maybe a wedding, maybe in a church, club, wherever, and I often won't play the oversimplified drivel that is actually written on the page more than the first time through anyway, preferring to add the kind of accompaniment and embellishment that both better fit the singer and says, "pro pianist" at the same time. If you Nashville, then you already know more than most readers. Use it. And if you're still in Nashville now, look up Beegie Adair and ask her for some piano tips. Really.

I have been out of the "music business" for many years. But I still like the creativity part of music in general.
