I am using BB 2013.
It's not clear to me what is actually happening when you open a file. Like if I open a .MGU or .MGX file, and I already have a file open, what happens? Is the file that I already have open automatically closed before opening the new one? Perhaps I'm mistaken, but it has seemed like on a couple of occasions that this was not the case and that whatever I opened kind of opened on top of something else. I am still new to the product so I may be in error, but this is how it seemed
Is it possible to have more than one file open at a time? When I use the Melodist - and create a new file, is the one that's already open overwritten completely?

On my system, it does not open more than one file at a time, and it does not overwrite a file with any part of another.
If something weird like that happened to you, I suggest you do Opt., Return to Factory Settings.
I can't comment on the Melodist - I don't use it.
NOTE: what do you have for the checkbox in Opt., Preferences at the bottom that says, "Allow multiple instances of BIAB to be running"?

Don't confuse commands such as "Open MIDI file" or "Open Audio file" with the straight File-> Open command.
The straightforward Open command, also available in the LH toolbars, is for opening BiaB songfiles. When you have one songfile loaded and hit Open and choose another, the one already loaded is indeed Closed and the new file then opens.
However, some of those other commands can be used to Import a MIDI or Audio file into the already existing song. Won't stay there unless Saved that way.
