Good Morning,
For the first time I am trying out amplitube with band in a box but I find that it doesn't work if I add it as a plugin for one of the midi tracks but will work fine with realtracks though.
So is it just an audio plugin?

Simple answer, yes, Amplitube is a audio plugin.

And, once the MIDI plays an instrument to produce audio, Amplitube can affect that audio.
This is important because if you render the audio within BIAB, Amplitube will affect the final render... but if you export a MIDI file, load that MIDI into another program, and don't have Amplitube in that other program as an effect on that track, you won't hear anything from it.

Hi Jan,
Amplitube can indeed be invoked on a MIDI sound. I use it, for one example, on the dry Rhodes MIDI voices to add a bit of grit to the Rhodes piano in certain instances, emulating the sound of the Rhodes stage piano when jacked thru, say, a guitar amp.
It is important to understand that the chosen MIDI synth is going to be a DXi or VSTi "instrument" plugin and must therefore be invoked at the top of the list. Then invoke an audio effect such as Amplitube in a slot that is further down the list, making sure that you are now invoking a VST (without the "i" at the end) Audio Effect.
