The boy can play! He's not only got the technique down but can nail the feel.

Take a gander at Geof's earlier stuff as well. Started at a very tender age and has always been precocious.

I love it.

Blessed are the children.

Blessed indeed . . . also just a reminder that jazz is not dead as many have hinted to in recent post right here on da good old forum.

A friend of mines wife and 3 children perform. He's a genius on euphonium, his wife is vivacious, pretty, flirty but doesn't try to be on purpose the kids as cute as they come, 7 5 and 3. 5 mics 2 Bose systems, DVDs CDs and "tours".

His wife is flat (off key). I kid is too young. Happy, feel good, bouncy, Grandfathers Clock tic tok.

Trained seals. Kids are home schooled, some sort of Mennonite sect, strict.

Is that good?

I had 2 friends not allowed out until scales and music lessons are done. Had a lunch with my early 60 s friends a month ago. Paul tool piano and organ a grand in the living room, full pedal board huge organ. We'd wait outside. He was good. Hasn't touched it in years. I had 4 kids. Any could take music only 1did. Not using it now, was so so on piano and same in voice.

What to do?
I say let them be kids.

I don't have a definitive answer. Trained seal? Too young? Should be on a swing.

I taught all my kids survival. All can make a fire in under a minute. Useful? Sure is in the James Bay basin.

I want to live there badly. No country for sick old men. I still can make a fire in 30 seconds out of bush materials and my little tobacco tin.

Useful? Probably not.

Kid has nice potential. Mac can talk about good tone and when it comes. I try as best I can to imitate the best vocal interpretation I know.

Purcell? When I am laid...

I've put up with that 'trained seal' crap from a very early age and I just don't buy it one little bit.

In my case, there were also those racists that used the 'trained monkey' line.

Why shouldn't a child be allowed to work to their abilities?

I came to the conclusion that many who spout those lines are exhibiting envy over their own perceived problems.

As I learned from a bit of study in the weird world of psychology that envy is not a synonym for jealousy.

When someone has envy, they do not realize they have it.

Jealousy, on the other hand, can often be a good thing. For example, I am a jealous husband, make no mistake about that. I also serve a jealous God. It is written.

But to call a precocious child a 'trained seal' is beyond the pale.

Well you want to know the rest of the story. The guy is a friend. At the dress he has kids on boxes with wireless pretend mics and lav's on the shirt. It makes a 4 yr old or whatever the same size as the 7 yr old. He gives them cookies when they vamp with the mics and 'pretend' to sing. They are more off key than on. To occupy them while Dad plays his killer solo, Mom passes them the cookies.

He asked what I thought and I said that. He lost the wooden boxes and the cookies for the performance but they still were doing cutsie and knew it. I sat in the 'heavy' horns for the euph 2nd and 3rd parts with my wife.

They normally do a church circuit. Our band leader, knowing we were having a NON church crowd mostly told him no religious numbers.

Now they are moving to South America as missionaries. OK.

As to the monkey thing it comes from the old English ap(e). And it had NOTHING to do with that before so you used that old word to say someone copied something.

Perhaps things are viewed differently through other's eyes. I was brought up in the strict British style, middle class pretenders, polished silver on sunday's with white linen, wedgeworth, fancy glassware, etc. Despite the hard times. Carry on, and bite your lip.

I was NOT referring to the lad on the video, I'm not the trumpet player.

And I hated it that my friend's mother whacked his knuckles with a ruler when he flubbed one scale and made him do them over and over. In my family, you could take music if YOU wanted to. I have the 60 year old piano as proof I was the only one of 6 that did.

When my friend's mom had company he had to dress up and play Chopin for them while they had tea. Very nice. Hasn't touched the piano since he left home, and I met his Mom a month ago and her husband died and she had just sold the Chickering concert grand. I might have bought that, and a new house for it too. Paul, the son, is a millionaire, and owns his father's former paving company. Nice Mercedes, however I like my old pickup, I don't pick up the junk inside, and the dashboard has dust all over it. I write phone numbers on the dash with my finger. LOL.
