Is there a way / workaround to have a cymbal roll that occurs on many jazz (and other) songs, especially on ballads as an ending? You know, when the band holds the chord (sustains it) or also makes rolls, like on guitar or even piano. (Sorry, a little hard to explain in English).
Because right now, when I put a held chord at the end the drums make something like "wham" - a single hit, while the other instruments sustain. That sounds odd.

If not, I`ll put it in the wishlist, as I think this is really missing and important.

Thanks, Sandra

Hi Sandra, how's things going?

The only way I can think of to have that happen inside of Band in a Box right now would involve pouring through the realdrums raw files looking for an example of a cymbal roll, copying just the roll into a .wav file and then pasting it at the right place on an Audio track created on BB's single Audio track. Or, perhaps you could find an audio sample of just a cymbal roll somewhere and use that one to save a bit of the time.

Its a good idea, and I for one certainly encourage you to put that on the Wishlist.

Endings in BiaB could enjoy some better options IMO.

Yes put this on the wish list. I think the weakest link in BiaB is the endings.

There are only two ways that I know of to get a cymbal roll at the ending. One way is to add a wav file like Mac suggested. I get my cymbal roll wavs from here http://www.freesound.org/search/?q=cymbal+rolls
This is a good place to get other sounds, especially sound effects. Plus the price is right, free.

The other way is to use midi, however you have to have a really good cymbal patch to make it sound real. That is one with a number of layers and a round robin effect so you don’t get that dreaded machine gun sound.

Good luck.

I arrived early to a restaurant.
The manager asks, "do you mind waiting a bit?"
I said no.
"Good", he said. "Take these drinks to table 3"

The best way I think is to find a cymbal roll but then make your own RD part out of it.That way it'll sound right at different tempos.

That idea sounds good, John. Have you done this? You could probably sell it to users here.

Not the cymbal rolls but I did do a tambourine a while back. I have nothing to do. I'll see if I can put together a cymbal roll RD part. I think I can get RHARV to host it on his server and get it free. I don't want any money. It's all in the fun of it.

BTW I still have a RD part that is just the added snare beat for that surf sound. Think Hawaii 5 O

AND if anyone can steer me to a RT that has a cymbal roll it'd be helpful. Safe me from an exhaustive search.

Hi ya`ll,
Those seem to be real good suggestions! I don`t quite get this:
Quote:

and then pasting it at the right place on an Audio track

I know how to make an audiofile, cut it etc, no problem. But how do I get it at the RIGHT place (at the end)? How do I insert it to the audio track, so it sounds just at the very last bar in my arrangement?

Yep,to me the easiest way to do it is to use a sample like Mario suggested in your DAW of choice. There are a bunch of samples out there that you can find (sometimes for free).
Good luck.

I think I'd first create a blank Audio track in the bb song by recording from beginning to end with any input selected but the record volume fader turned all the way down. Keep Take, and that should create an audio file of the same name as the bb songfile, in the same folder, but with a different suffix to indicate that the file is audio. Probably a .wav suffix.

Then I'd open that file in an audio editor such as Audacity and paste my drumroll in it at the place on the timeline where it should be. I wouldn't be too worried about the *exact* place at that point, just close. Then I'd save that file again and have a .wav file in the same folder as the bb songfolder of the same name, but this time it would roll silently and have a cymbal roll somewhere near the end of the song. Then I'd use the bb Audio Edit command to Timeshift Audio and use + or - numerical values to "slide" that cymbal roll to exactly where on the timeline I need it to be.

There's probably other ways to do this as well, perhaps one could use the Edit Copy Paste from inside bb, but I'm not certain how to go about doing it that way without some experimentation. I'd be concerned that the Windows Clipboard may not let me highlight, Copy from one audio program and Paste into bb the result, but that might work as well.

if you make a loop out of it, it will adjust to the tempo. Just highlight the area where you want it, just like any other real drum or real track. The ability to loop audio opens a lot of doors to solutions that weren't possible even a year ago.

edit: oops, my reply was oriented toward RB where I spend most of my time. I'm pretty sure there's a way to do it (ie. just have the loop play in a limited part of the song) in BIAB too, but I don't know the nooks and crannies of BIAB well enough to say how.

I think I`ll try the Midi Option, since the RD option seems to be not flexible enough. I cannot cahnge the lenght of the song, once the audio file is created. But if anyone in the near future is able to solve this problem with a flexible RD option I`d be more than happy to receive a RD cymbal roll;-)
Or even better, PG music gives us a nice gift with the next summer apdate :-)

Thanks,
Sandra

And a couple of tutorials on the BIAB wiki.

There was post in the yahoo groups a while back.
The person there recommended recording your own voice counting the bars so you can see how realdrums are picked.

So I mixed the realdrum with verbal counting in the original .wma
Just a simple, "one" ... "two" ...
at the beginning of each measure
I didn't start verbally counting until after the two lead in bars. This will make a verbal "one" line up with a "1" bar as indicated in the _Style.txt file.

Picking this realdrum with counting you'll hear your voice count out the measure that BIAB selected for the realdrums to play.

When you hear "55", that's the bar in the .wma that is playing.
And where you can put a cymbal roll.
This Really helps to make sense of the _Style.txt file.

One thing is for "shots"/"holds" BIAB will play shot and may then mute the volume. You'll only get like 1 beat of a roll. In the _Style.txt you will likely have to increase the duration. It's field 5 of the hold or shot line.
