Hi,
When connecting my Yamaha to Power Tracks, using midi, the audio that I hear while I am playing, and the playback itself is terrible. What I am expecting is something as good as the samples that come with the program.
I initially had it setup to play back through my PC speakers, the audio was very low, could not hear it.
So I got it to playback though my keyboard speakers, volume was pretty decent then. The sound of the keyboard though is not good.
Ex. Play without being hooked up to PT, sounds good. Plug in usb cable, instant degrading in the audio quality, level drops, notes do not sound as good. Start recording, through-out the song when playing chords, individual note amplitudes will vary, a three note chord may, or may not have all three notes at the same level, one may jump in all of a sudden, may sound high pitched.
Pretty much,if I play some song without being hooked to PT, sounds good, connect to PT, does not sound the same anymore.
As for drivers, it is using the yamaha input and output drivers. No latency issues.
Lot of choices power tracks midi drivers dialog boxes.
Ideally would like to have the recorded sound as same as what I play when not recording using PT.
Thanks for any direction.
Jeff

Are you having PT play midi out to the Yamaha, or are you having PT play audio out?

The reason to ask is that if the playback is going through the default synth in PT it is using that sound module, and not the Yamaha's samples.

Do not really know. On the midi driver setup dialog, the checkbox, Re-Route MIDI playback to default Dxi/VSTi Synth. Is not checked. When I removed the check then I could hear the output through my keyboard speakers.
The Default DXi/VSTi Synth, Is CoyoteWt.

So not really sure what is being used.
How can you tell?

Thanks for the response
Jeff

If it wasn't checked how did you remove the check?

Sounds like this is the first place to double check..

Hi,
I probably did not say that right.

By default that box is checked. With that checked I could not hear what I was playing.
In trying to figure out why, I removed the check, then I could hear the audio coming out of my Yamaha speakers, which I believe is the output of PT, as the record sounds just as bad. So the audio coming out is not good, no representative of how the keyboard actually sounds. So I am trying to get what I hear without PT, to sound the same when using PT.

So I am looking for thoughts on what needs to be done to get a accurate sound via PT.

Thanks for any direction,
Jeff

Jeff, a long shot here but as my slowly failing memory serves me, Yamaha patch assignments are slightly different from GM assignments. Do you perhaps need a patch map?

When I have wanted to record the actual audio output of my Roland keyboard, I've connected the audio outputs on the back of the keyboard through my audio interface that's connected to the computer. The recording sounded the same as playing the keyboard on its' own, there was no degrading of the audio.

I have 2 separate connections: the MIDI USB to computer cable for the MIDI info and the audio outputs from the keyboard into the audio interface. (There isn't a patch map for my keyboard. I did one for years ago for BIAB but I don't have one for PT)

Just another thought to add to the mix.

Hi,
Not sure what a patch map is, or where you find one.
Is that a software upgrade for the Yamaha?
Will check out the Yamaha web site.
Thanks
Jeff

Patch Maps are foud on this site, va the Support button at top of page
http://www.pgmusic.com/support_miscellaneous.htm

Not sure if that is the issue though, or if it's your MIDI device selection.. (check/uncheck previously discussed) combined with other options.

Jeff, a patch map would be a listing of all the sounds on your keyboard. Look on page 100 of your manual to find these patches. Sometimes you can find patch maps already made up on the internet, if not you may need to make one up yourself. Then check out the following page here at PG Music: http://www.pgmusic.com/support_miscellaneous.htm .

Although this will help you put together and install a patch map so you can access the sounds on your YPG-235 directly from within the PG application, I don't think that is your problem here. It sounds more like a driver or midi selection issue to me. Review pages 78 to 84 of your owners manual to insure everything is hooked up correctly.

Although this video isn't the best, it may help you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7vucwldHvU .

Hi,
Thanks for the info and spending the time looking into this.
I had not looked into the Yamaha itself but I will read over the owners manual.

Hi,
No patch for my Yamaha. I also have a Yamaha PSR340 but that does not have usb output.

The video is pretty good.
Trying to compare the features he was using to Power Tracks.
I did have the Re-Route MIDI playback to default Dxi/VSTi Synth not checked.
That allowed me to hear my playing back though the keyboard speakers.
Not sure what in PT is like the other items he was refering to though.

I did follow the MIDI section in the owners manual as you suggested. Did not seem to help much.
One of the choices might have helped but reduced the volume so low I can barely hear it.

So still working on this. Looked at some Power Tracks videos also, none really explain how to get the MIDI actually working, drivers, etc.
Nice if the had a tutorial that shows how to connect a keyboard nad get it working.
Seems like this is all guess work.

Think signal path. the midi track in PWT must exit thru the midi port on the interface or sound card, so PWT must have each track set to whatever that is. Like on my system it is "US-800 midi".

Then the keyboard must be set to receive the midi. It may have a setting like global, or all or something. This is needed for it to receive all the tracks.

At that point it is up to the Yamaha to read the data and assign patches and such. That is where Patch maps come in handy so that what the Yamaha "sees" is the correct patch assignment request.

The result should be the Yamaha speakers sounding the song, and also the option to patch out to a better sounding system.

If I run the sample, f blues seq file, it sounds great through my PC speakers. Play it through my Yamaha and it does not sound as good.
I can see the 3 instruments in this song are using the Yamaha midi which is the same way I have it for what I play. Completely different sounds.
Like my recording is not as good as how this sample was recorded.

I'm pretty sure it's a problem with 'Coyote'....I have the same problem and I've used both a Yamaha AND a Roland keyboard. Things sound just fine on the recording and even playback but as soon as I have to run it thru the default synth (Coyote) to merge tracks together it all sounds like crap! I got on this forum hoping someone knows how to merge tracks WITHOUT using Coyote or find some way to turn the reverb (or pedal) off in Coyote.

Reverb in Coyote - right-click in the synth to find the magic controls

To render from Yamaha or Roland; record the audio out of the hardware synth to new tracks.
In other words you send the MIDI to the synth, then record the sound produced by the synth to new audio tracks, then mute the MIDI (to stop redundancy)

External synths can not 'render' they must be recorded.
