I had a big band rehearsal last night and one of the guys has a friend who's a well known studio pianist who flew out for a gig last week at MS headquarters in Redmond, Wa. Like a lot of players he has all his charts and lyrics on his IPad. He put the IPad on the piano and the coordinator saw it and said no way can he have an IPad at a MS function and he was forced to put it away. A simple fun gig turned into a real chore, instead of being able to pick from about 200 tunes all set up he had to do 3 hours from memory.
For me it would never occur to me that someone would not let me use an IPad but it's certainly possible that the thing might die or something so even on a plane I would bring at least one folder of hard copies just in case.

Yeah, it you're doing a corporate gig you have to think differently from a regular musician. Corporations have their own things going on we would never think of. I was in the car business for years and I remember reading if you were an exec with Chrysler, God forbid you parked a Ford in an executive parking spot. You had to park it out in the main lot with the rest of the plebes. And something foreign like a Toyota or Bimmer? They probably wouldn't even let you in the gate.

I used to run part of a college in "IBM country", by far the major employer in our region. We regularly had to avoid going with the low bidder since we had mostly IBM clients and family members whom we did not want sitting at clone computers, assuming we wanted to keep getting IBM grants and future students.

Shocking...just SHOCKING!! I'll certainly not bite on that new 128 Gig IPAD thats coming soon!? Local 5 in Chi-Town and Local 658 in Miami might just be behind these "leaders"...but I hope you musicians did get scale

You should have thought about that ahead of time and covered the thing at least so nobody could see that big Apple logo on the back...
At least you didn't get fired on the spot, that's what Ford would do to anybody who worked at Ford and parked another brand of vehicle in the Ford employee lot. One guy even got the can because his own Ford broke down and he borrowed his brother in law's Chevvy to get to work (long ago, this was, when the original Henry Ford was still alive, its in the book).
Shouldn't have let them see that Apple.
They make covers for iPads...

It wasn't me personally just a story I heard last night. In a room full of tech heads though I kinda doubt if just covering up the logo would have fooled anyone. Just the look of the screen says IPad. My point was the guy should have taken at least his 50 most important paper charts in a folder. I would have put the folder on the piano behind the IPad. Then no harm no foul.

I was taught that being prepared means KNOWING the material. Internalized.
Hopefully this pianist will take the lesson to heart and reach for that, nothing but good comes of it.
I found out that KNOWING a small number of songs trumps having 200 charts available every time.
Sounds better, and its more fun that way, too.

Heh. A few years back, I had a BIAB track to play and sing along with at a local SF/F con (PenguiCon) that also has a leaning towards open-source. Opened up my laptop, those Microsoft boot tones ring out, and at least half the audience (all dedicated open-source and Linux geeks) rumbled with disgruntlement. But we did get a good laugh out of it, and the song went over well.

"No ipads at MS Function" ??? !!! ??? !!! You should have strongly insisted that they provide you with an equivalent MS replacement. They did not tell you in advance, obviously - you should have asked when they informed you of this requirement, stating that you would have been happy to comply if you knew in advance. You should have recommended that your promoters use this opportunity to create some competitive spirit in the MS employees by suggesting they say "See, this gentlemen chose an iPad over an {insert competing MS product here - I know they don't have one} - this is why we have to work harder. The iPad is a great product that people choose over ours, and we have to change that !!!!"
(yeah, it's easy and fun to tell OTHER people "you should have...." - I probably wouldn't have done those things I said above either....well, maybe I would have ; )

One of the first things I do after starting up a brand new PC is turn off ALL the annoying and cpu cycle wasting System Sounds.
Old habit from the daze of having to work in cubicles. We made a rule, no System Sounds. Not only made less noise in the work environment, but programmers and engineers no longer suffered the embarrassment of everybody hearing when we did something stupid. "BOINK!" <g>
There is no real reason to have those sounds, what happens onscreen is all we really need.
And when using the laptop to play audio files thru a PA or amp, well. Turn off System Sounds first, and leave 'em off.
One big problem for Music Makers can happen when System Sounds are not turned off as well -- The Microsoft System Sounds are 48KHz pcm audio. When working in other bitrates, any System Sound must be able to access the sound device at that bitrate -- and this has led to a few strange problems with the recorded music.

Yep, Mac, this was before I learned that vital system tweak. Seriously, the overall reaction from the audience was rueful laughter with a healthy dollop of "Dunh Dunh Duh-Dunh Dunh Da-Dunh dunh-dunh-dunh DUNH".
