I know, it's on my list along with an SSD and maybe a USB 3 card. I'll probably put in 16 gigs but I'll see what the max I could use and check the prices. Maybe I'll max it out. Matt uses SSD's, he's been my guinea pig (sorry Matt!) they seem to be working for him and the prices have come down so I'll be looking at that too.

Like I just posted, my system is only two years old and I'm already feeling the need for speed...

I'm going to editorialize again, you know me I love doing that. Older folks grew up with "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" or "My old Dell is 8 years old and still going strong, why should I replace a perfectly good computer?" That's still good advice for cars, toasters, TV's, your old tattered but still comfy LazyBoy, etc. But not for computers. Older is not better, not even very useful. Old systems cause probably 90% of problems seasoned citizen folks talk about whether is software glitches, slow internet speeds, page downloads, email problems all of it. That's why Goodwill sells 5 year old PC's for maybe $100. Yes, they "work" but not well in the modern world. Mordern means the last 36 months. For many of us 36 monthls is like "it's been 3 years?? That was just last week, wasn't it?".

Wake up, chop chop, have some more coffee, get with the program guys.

Bob

As a retired comp sci prof, I do try to be on the leading (and bleeding) edge because that way, I can still answer questions from others. I love SSD drives. I have one as my boot drive in my production machine (which, by the way, is fine with 'only' 4GB RAM). The other is in my laptop as a result of a hard drive crash. An SSD is the single most effective upgrade I have ever made in a computer, and I'm including more RAM, SATA drives, bigger displays etc.

Been reading this with interest as I use Realtracks (RT) a lot. BIAB RT works well on my big PC, but I have had to strip a few things out on the laptop to get it stable.

Main PC - AMD Phenom II X6 1055T @2.81Ghz, 8G RAM, 1.5TB hard drive - Geekbench 7660
Laptop - INtel Core i5-3210M @2.50Ghz, 8G RAM, 1TB hard drive - Geekbench 2856

I use Roland SD50 and have given up with ASIO drivers as they gave me grief and I don't need them. MME seems to be less hungry and more stable.

I have also removed Sampletank as I never use it, may remove Coyote (only used for render and I've stopped using that now) and on the laptop I turn off background stuff like wireless, dropbox etc. and that seems to make it more stable.

BIAB MIDI on the other had works on much smaller machines and I used to run it on a little Netbook with a Roland SC8820 with no problems.

As others have said, the more you can throw at it, the better!!!

I tried ALL of the recommended solutions but I am still getting audio drop outs during playbacks.

my geekbench rating is 2568, I have a high-end Dell L702 laptop with 8 gigs of memory and 80 gigs of HD memory. Anyone have more trial solutions?

Try the following one at a time, checking operation after each one.

*Visit the Dell site, find their Support page, locate the Drivers section for your model and download and install the latest released drivers for the sound device in your make, model and operating system.

*Check for programs that run in the background that are not needed when running the music software but may be calling Interrupts to the sound and such.

*Do a websearch for the Piriform website, download and install the "ccleaner" program and run it to remove all sorts of bad things that can be picked up online, such as programs that "phone home" all the time, these often do so by calling Interrupts that unfortunately Interrupt sound.

*DEFRAG the hard drive.

*Try turning the WiFi to OFF using the physical button or keyboard command on the computer, sometimes certain WiFi implementations can interrupt audio in these kind of music programs.

Hey thar Oldtimer. I just tried looking up your laptop but I'm not finding anything that makes sense with what you posted. First you say your geekbench score is 2,568 but you also say it's a high end Dell with 8 gigs RAM but then only an 80 gig hard drive? They haven't put 80 gig hd's in lappys for a long time. That geekbench score is fairly weak as well if this is a newer Dell. The only L702 I could find is an Intel i7 with a 500 gig hd and pretty hot specs. One of those should geekbench in the 6-7,000 range.

Assuming it is a new one we need some detailed info of what you're doing when you hear glitches. Stuff like what style is being used, how many RT's, do you have an audio track running, what synth are you using, are you using ASIO or MME, where is the latency set, how is Biab set up in the midi devices window, the audio setup window, things like that. As a matter of fact, lets start with the latency settings. That alone could be your problem, just raise the latency until the glitches go away.

Oldtimer,

Did you try the suggestion by Rachael and Peter Gannon in the early posts where they mentioned disabling the "Speed Up Generation of Realtracks"?

This is found under ...

1. Select "Opt" (1) and then "Preferences" (2).

2. From the "Preferences" dialogue window, select "Realtracks".

3. Remove the check mark from "Speed up generation of Realtracks".

In an above post, Mac mentioned 'background processes'. The generating of Realtracks is one of those background processes that could cause static. Disabling this will mean that it will take 30 seconds or so before a song will start to play because BIAB completes compiling the backing before playing it. (With the option enabled, BIAB tries to compile and play simultaneously and this uses a huge amount of a computer's resources.)

Also ...

What audio driver are you using? This is found under "Opt", "Preferences", "Audio". The MME driver is the best one to have selected.

Hope this helps,
Noel

Jazzmammal noticed the hard drive size.

Good troubleshooting, Jazzmammal, sounds like maybe the original drive got replaced with a drive from an older machine, in which case it likely is not up to the task.
