Colorado can use them again. Several fires in the state threatening lives, homes, and the natural beauty that residents and visitors enjoy alike. High winds and temps in the 90s lit up the state today. We need rain without wind or lightning and strength and wisdom for residents and firefighters and officials.

Scott,

I hope you're not in the line of fire in this firestorm.

Scott, you are in my thoughts, for certain. Try to keep self and family out of harm's way. I guess it's a cost of living in such a beautiful, forested part of the US. I loved my few months in Colorado circa '69.

We are about 3 miles south of the Black Forest fire. Winds have been generally from the south. If the aeriel shots are any indication quite a bit of the fuel (trees) is burned, so it seems. Over 360 homes have been lost so far. 2 persons found dead yesterday in their garage, vehicle doors open, trying to leave.

This was a pine forest that would look as much at home in North Carolina or Northern Michigan near Petosky if you've ever visited those areas. It was a very beautiful part of the area - you can easily forget that you are in Colorado because of the dense forest - you can't see the front Range of the Rockies from most parts of it. Now the forest is literally black.

Yesterday they were able to get some better aerial shots. http://www.krdo.com/news/-/417220/20564200/-/trk1atz/-/index.html

The fire traveled across tree-tops so we are told. This is just shy of the Waldo Canyon fire that claimed 2 lives and over 340 homes. Some 30000 people have been evacuated, if I have the numbers right.

Last night first night this week house hasn't been filled with smell of wildfire. Even though it's far away, it's hard to sleep with fire smell in your nostrils.

Used to fly over those forests.

Used to ride my old Honda 750 through them, too, trying to straighten out those twisties. Beautiful country when it isn't burning.

You stay safe, Scott.

Scott, As our dear Mac would say: It's a virtual paradise when it ain't boinin'

How far away is Manito Springs where we lived while stationed at Fort Carson, my final duty station.

As our Brit friends might say: "Keep your pecker (chin) up!"

If God allowed the fires, what good will it do to ask Him to stop them?

Great question, Bud. I've asked this question and others similar to it countless times. Job in the Bible asked these types of questions to God when God allowed disaster upon disaster to come against Job's family. Prayers often seem futile. Very often; more often than not I would say. And yet we are challenged to bring our requests before Him. I'm not saying that I understand God and His ways. If I could really comprehend that then He could be contained in my or others' understanding of Him and frankly that would be a god not worth believing in in my opinion. I couldn't really look to Him to fix my brokenness or to be my source of hope, if I could really understand everything about Him.

It's really a great question.

Update on the fire is that it's mostly contained. About 500 home total loss. Two deaths. About 25 square miles of burn area.

Why? Can't answer that.

PLEASE please please do not make this forum into a place for discussing religion. It will lead to misunderstanding, anger and hurt, as we have already seen a couple times.

There are plenty of other places for religious chat. I invite anyone who does not wish to be a supporting part of this thread to go somewhere else.

"PLEASE please please do not make this forum into a place for discussing religion. It will lead to misunderstanding, anger and hurt, as we have already seen a couple times."

Excuse me! Scott started this thread asking for prayer by those so inclined. Seems to me that those not so inclined should have tuned out then.

Scott then answered Rubberball's question regarding the need for prayer. All in the context of the original post. If Scott started the thread, he has every right to handle it as he sees fit.

Is the very mention of God so upsetting? I would hope not.

Not all of us. I haven't fallen since the last time I drank moonshine.

Better to send a donation than recite superstitious utterances.

Praying to god or Joe Pesci results in about the same rate of success.

Thread title:

“If you are a praying person”

Some responses:

“If God allowed the fires, what good will it do to ask Him to stop them?”

“PLEASE please please do not make this forum into a place for discussing religion. It will lead to misunderstanding, anger and hurt, as we have already seen a couple times.”
There are plenty of other places for religious chat. I invite anyone who does not wish to be a supporting part of this thread to go somewhere else.”

“Quadruple plus one. No religion PLEASE!”

“Not all of us. I haven't fallen since the last time I drank moonshine.
Better to send a donation than recite superstitious utterances.”

“Praying to god or Joe Pesci results in about the same rate of success.”

What struck me about these statements was that they lacked any expression of support, or concern for Scott or his neighbors' well-being. The only word they were in response to was “praying”.

Each of these responders had two choices upon reading the thread title: they could either offer support, or they could have simply ignored the thread, since they find the word “praying” so offensive.

Instead, they chose to attempt to police the forum, to insure that no 'superstitious utterance' should dare to raise it's ugly head amid their own sage opinions.

Interesting, that.

my opinion... and you are free to disagree with it...
is that intelligent mature adults should be able to discuss anything and everything. Controversy does not equate to conflict... conflict is generally introduced by someone who is accustomed to getting his/her way by bullying, or by someone who does not know how to hold a civil exchange of ideas.

It is normal, expected and desirable for members of a large group to have many different opinions. It only gets weird when one of the following things takes place:

1) someone tries to impose his/her opinion on the whole group

or (and this is just a variation of the first kind of imposition...)

2) someone tries to impose his opinion on the group by enforcing a ban on expressing the opposing point of view. This usually comes after a float and sting expression of an opinion, followed by the rule that nobody is allowed to follow up with a conflicting opinion.

Note that I'm not imposing this on the group as a rule, I'm only expressing it as my opinion.
