I've been searching high and low with no luck. Either used on ebay won't ship or it's real expensive. Or ther's real junk out there. If the time comes that I have to have one and can justify it because the band has gigs I settled on this one.
Englehardt ES-9
American made, used to be Kay etc.but in the mean time is there and Upright equivalent to the SX Rondo stuff?

Good student grade fiddles are coming out of Czech area for a while now. The Chinese also are into the game.

A great bass fiddle, on the other hand, typically costs house money. And more.

Perhaps the single most important piece of information about finding and purchasing any member of the violin family I can give is to find someone who plays the instrument, preferably someone who also teaches the instrument. They usually have the current inside information, know who may have one for sale already at a good deal, etc.

My problem with that info is I don't live anywhere near anyone that fits those descriptions.

Have you tried contacting any of the local bluegrass pickers to see if maybe they can give you a lead?

.
The standup bass is still standard in bluegrass, and the Englehardt is the brand most often seen, at least at the festivals I attend.

John,

Have you contacted rharv on this? Remember his parents run a music shop and they might be able to point you to some leads.

Also, have you contacted Kurt at Rondo directly? I bet that the joint he buys the Valencia branded stuff also has bass viol but that it's just not enough volume to demand him buying them ahead of time.

He does have violins so he may be able to get basses as well. I just emailed him. I'll keep you posted.

This Bass Shop is in Piedmont, NC:

http://bassviolinshop.com/

Try a Bing search for "bass violin xxxxxxxx xx" where the x's are the closest cities nearest to you.

Also do the same for "bluegrass instruments xxxxxxxx xx" as well. -- A VERY GOOD IDEA in this area of the country.

Then I suggest telephone calls first, often able to sort out the cheat from the chaff by how the phone conversation and your personal gift of gab lets you know who to pursue further. or not.

There may be an upright bass or two hanging around and not in use closer to you than is known. Consider placing a "Wanted" ad in local newspapers and those local trading/swap/for sale papers in your area. Bass fiddles are like old Chevvies in the sense that you can pick up one that has been sitting around in non-use and may even need some work, but the things are rather acceptive to restoration techniques. A handy fellow with your life experience could handle job like replacing tailpiece, bridge, soundpost, or even crack repair or reglue using most of the tools you already own and the internet to find and purchase any needed parts. This method can represent a really great value in the sense that the people who own "that old bass" would likely sell it as-is locally for a lot less than its true value when repaired, restrung and ready to go.

Also bear in mind that for a modern act, you don't necessarily have to find a Bass that touts the big round and loud sound that costs the most money when the subject is Bass Viol. Use of a good pickup at the Bridge, which the modern amplified artist is most likely to desire anyway, can work wonders in that dept.

Not sure where you emailed, didn't receive (yet).
I've seen them in the shop, so they are around, not sure how available they are. Probably be school instruments mostly, as far as used ones go.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

dang, John! That's in Greensboro about 40 minutes away from me!

If you can arrange a deal by phone I'll pick it up and deliver it to ya! (when's your next gig? Anything over the holiday weekend?)

Or, you can come for a visit and we'll drive to greensboro and double team the salesman. That way you'll get to try before ya buy.

I found a Cremona SB-2 that I negotiated down to $350.She's purchased a new one and this was her learning bass. It's a cheap Chineese one of course but will be good to learn on.As Mac stated I'll be playing BG so it doesn't need to be perfect and I in deed can fix most anything. My friend has an old DeArmond PUP he's giving me and I already have a Pignose Hog30 on order.
