It may be not happening because of settings in the BB MIDI/Audio... located in the Options menu.
In order to do the "Direct Rendering" function, there MUST be a DXi MIDI synth selected in the MIDI/Audio setup window.
This is accomplished by checking the "Use DXi" command located at the mid-lower righthand side of the MIDI/Audio window. Note that you may also have to select or re-select one of the DXi synthesizers on the listing.
Rather nonintuitive, but for some reason this Direct Render function happens via the DXi MIDI synth, regardless of whether or not the song contains any MIDI tracks.

OK. I checked the Use VST/DXI synth button on the mid right of this box.  It also automatically checked Route Midi through Midi driver. Where do I select the "DXi synthesizer on the list"?  Or I am in the wrong place?

But how do I know which "tracks" use midi? I am assuming you mean instruments since that is the only thing I know how to mute? Here is my BIAB screen. Can you direct me where to go? I have found that if I just futz around with it I normally break more things than I fix.

Tracknames that use MIDI are Yellow in color, tracks that use Realtracks are Green.
The first available slot in the synth window, hit the dropdown slot arrow and the list of any installed DXi synths will appear, select one. Of course, if you have never installed any DXi synths, you likely won't see any choices there.
For Direct Rendering in BiaB, it does not matter whether your song has MIDI tracks in it or is all Realtracks Audio, you still need to invoke the DXi synth to do the Rendering process. I think the code that does it is inside the DXi synths, but don't know enough about what's under the hood to state that as defiinitive.
I do know, however, that if there is no DXi synth invoked, there will be no Direct Rendering process.

OK, I opened what i think is the "synth window". I hit the first avail slot and I had only one choice which is VSC Dxi. Here is a picture of what opens. Is this the right place. Should I be all set to render now?
