It occurred to me today as I was shopping, that I have made new habits to compensate for my failing memory.
For example:
1) when I park in a large parking lot, I no longer look for a space near the door (because that ends up being DIFFERENT all the time, and I don't compensate well for difference any longer). Instead, I always look for a spot in the aisle that is directly in line with the store's main exit. No matter how far away I have to park, I always park in this lane. Why? Because then I'm sure that if I walk straight out of the store and continue walking, I'll eventually find my car.
2) when I have to fill something with water, I used to start the hose, check my watch, then go do something else for a few minutes before coming back to turn off the hose. Ha ha ha, THAT ain't happening anymore! If I try that now, I'll forget in a heartbeat and overflow whatever I was trying to fill. So now I FORCE myself to wait until whatever I'm filling is full, OR, turn it off before I walk away
3) Car keys. I can nevah EVAH put them anywhere except the designated car-key place, or they'll be lost forever. I also keep a spare key in my wallet in case I forget where the designated car-key place is.
so, I'm curious to know if anybody else has consciously formed adaptive habits that pick up where memory leaves off. Maybe I can use some of your ideas too.

I do a few things much like you. I have a bowl by the door where my wallet, my keys and my sunglasses go. ALWAYS.
If I have to take something with me "tomorrow", I lay it down in front of the door so I have to step over it to forget it.
For pills, which I take 3 times a day, I have an alarm with an mp3 as the alert tone that says "Time to take pills." It beeps at the set times.
I have not had the lost car problem yet, but I never go to places like malls with many entrances and exits. If it were to become an issue, I would just leave myself a voice mail saying "You are parked outside Sears 12 cars deep."
For everything else, Google Calendar is your friend. Tomorrow, for example, I have to go check out a guy's printing problem at 10, be home for a plumbing job estimate at 2, meet a friend at 6 to give him something on my "legacy gift list", and do an airport pickup at 9pm. They are all in Google Calendar and I will get a reminder 30 minutes before each event. Technology today helps a lot. Tommorrow at the airport I will type in a memo saying "Blue concourse, lower level, 3rd row" or wherever I park.

If it were to become an issue, I would just leave myself a voice mail saying "You are parked outside Sears 12 cars deep." that's an idea I can use! Also, BobCFlatpicker (in a different thread) mentioned using a cell phone to capture song ideas... both of these ideas are good uses of the phone I carry around but never use for much of anything. Thanks for the suggestions! Is someone talking 'bout old musicians?? he looks like Herman Munster!! There's an easy way to locate your modern vehicle when it is somewhere in the big parking lot.
The Radio Keyfob.
Most only think of the keyfob as a way to unlock the car doors when they get to the car.
But, since it is actually a Radio Control device, with most of them in the States on the 300MHz band, we can take advantage of that fact to find our vehicle if we also know a little bit about radio propagation.
Most Keyfobs today also have a button on them for PANIC - the button is typically RED and if you push it in proxinity to your vehicle, it will start the horn beeping in Alarm Mode. Another push of the same button will shut that off again.
But you can't just hold the little keyfob with its built-in tiny antenna at waist height and expect the transmitter to be able to cover the distance from door of store or sidewalk across that parking lot full of metal vehicles and get to the receiver in your own vehicle.
Instead, hold the keyfob as high as you can above your head, without having your hand cupped all around the keyfob so that the signal can radiate, then push the red button and, while holding it down, ROTATE THE KEYFOB above your head, over the area where you thik your car may be. This can greatly extend the coverage area and your horn will likely start beeping, your lights may flash on many models as well.
When you get close to where the beeping and flashing car is, simply push the red panic button again to turn that off.
Good idea to experiment with your keyfob a bit before heading out, practice turning on the beeping horn and flashing lights with the red button on the keyfob, and also turning them off again using the same button.
TIP: You can also use the red button to momentarily distract the attention of a baddie who may be between you and your vehicle. Heh.

"When you get close to where the beeping and flashing car is, simply push the red panic button again to turn that off." These work well, unless you forget which side of the store you entered from. Been there, done that. My new replacement keyfob, unlike the old one, beeps 3 times and shuts off by itself. Don S.

--Mac Mac, this is actually a pretty good suggestion but I must admit I am cracking up at the image of a bunch of us old guys wandering around a parking lot, keys over our head, multiple cars blaring out their panic alarms! Guess we could call it Band In A Parking Lot!

My music ears help me to narrow down the sound of my own car's horns to at least only that model and brand.
In my case, they are tuned to a Bb and the D above it.
Perfect for any longtime Trumpetist...

how does everybody else deal with this classic situation:
you've worked around these guys for 30 years... so you KNOW them, right?? Yet, when you pass one of them on the way to the coffee machine , his name just won't pop into your mind. He greets you by name. What do you say in return?
Everything *I* can think of is pretty lame.
"Heyyyy, how's it goin'?" (lame)
"Duuuuude!" (extra lame with a side order of cheesy)
just nod, smile and don't say anything (dead giveaway)
