It seems at first glance it's gravitating as a singer/sonwriter venue. Really reminds me of a real OM night.Surprised at the amount of folks signed up yet most players get 10 viewers.I wonder home Pat & I, and other PG people, will be accepted by the others.I found it a little anti-climatic to tell the truth.If more of us got on though with our tracks it could be a great extension of this forum.

I think it is what it is. As with any established site, there will be a cast of folks (an "inner circle") who know each other, support each other and are virtual friends. Yes, I am talking about a "clique" -- but not in a negative way. It is just the natural order of things.
If you stick around long enough, attend other folks' shows, be on the chat , etc..... -- then you will start to become part of the "inner circle". Remember almost all insiders started off as outsiders.
Of course, if we have about 10 active BIAB'ers, then we can have our own inner circle that will, overtime, intersect with other inner circles.
One more thing -- since you were 1/2 an hour late, other acts were playing which diluted your viewership.
I feel like I have been accepted by the streetjelly crowd -- even though my viewing numbers are on the low side (except for my 1st show, where I made announcements on a few websites and facebook). I do play mostly off-times, though. It makes sense to promote and go on when you say you are going on.

I'm sorry I missed all the performances on SJ.
I did grab Silvertones youtube stuff that Pat Marr posted. Great stuff John!
Just wondering if SJ would eventually have an archive of stuff that its possible to watch later, that would be great.
Myabe it will evolve into something like that, I don't know.

I agree completely with everybody's comments. But I'll add this as my take:
I think the site is in transition. Its fairly new and not many people know about it yet. The folks on this forum are constantly trading late-breaking news in the music world, yet we just found out about it recently. If not for Kevin's enthusiasm, we would still not know about it.
As a relatively unknown site, the same handful of people dominate, and it really IS like an entry-level open mic night at times. But the guy who started it wants to make money. As better acts start performing, I see potential for it to become a hot spot... at which time, it will be harder for any of us to get a spot. It will be in Frankie's best interest to make more spots available to the performers who are drawing viewers
In other words, quality of the shows will tend to get better as more people learn about it, and as those who are already there learn what's working for others and start doing it too.
So, John, I hope you continue to play because what you do is FAR more entertaining to me than most of what I hear on SJ at this point in time. I hope more PGForum members participate because this group has a lot to offer.

based on questions and answers from the SJ FAQ, I think they want it to be "real time", and therefore I doubt they will ever record the sessions for future playback. plus, I don't know how multiple playbacks of recorded covers would impact their royalty agreements with BMI and ASCAP. It would probably increase their liability without increasing their income (they only make money when people tip the live performers... but people would not tip a recording)

Not exactly the same but first and foremost, the name of the website communicates what the website is about. It's certainly more expensive for similar features to streetjelly as far as I can tell, but it has a machine behind it now and it looks that way.
Streetjelly looks rather amateur as it presents itself to the public through it's website. The logo alone looks like it either has something to do with 60's counterculture, or is just a poorly done logo by an amateur (my opinion - not sure this is shared by others).
Unless I'm totally clueless (it's happened before), how would the name of the site cause me to know what it's about? Not being a busker myself, is there something in the name that implies "hey, here's a place where you should perform online or watch online musicians."?
With ustream, the name of the site communicates it's purpose simply and cleanly without any 'insider' knowledge.
Same is true for concertwindow.com
Same is true for livestream.com
These have a more clear URL than streetjelly, at least in my limited knowledge of busking. I could totally be missing some 'jelly' terminology.
Just googling 'live concert streaming' doesn't point me to streetjelly but rather the other sites I pointed out.
Gotta ask if you want to broaden your audience, wouldn't you want the site where you will perform to be somewhat known or obvious?
The site might work fine, but since this discussion started by John is pointing at audience size, the whole internet awareness aspect of things is going to play into the usefulness of the site, I would think.

Licensing agreements for live entertainment are far different - and far less expensive - than licensing agreements concerning any form of mechanical copies.
That is likely governing the Streetjelly concept.

As I found out about Streetjelly, I searched for others and two that I found were YouNow, http://www.younow.com/, and StageIt, http://www.stageit.com/ (of course there are a lot of others). StageIt seems more pro oriented and YouNow looks too big! I have also found that google+ has tons of "open mic" or live shows going on -- so there are no lack for alternatives. (There is also Second Life!) StreetJelly seems likes the right mix of easy, accepting and small enough to have a showtime all to yourself. With YouNow, you might be sharing time with 1,000 other folks! SJ won't be for everyone -- but what is?

"Street JELLY" is a play on words for "street JAM" ... (probably because "street jam" is already taken) I know the wordplay removes it from the obvious reference, but if they HAD nailed the name "street JAM", it would have been pretty intuitive to figure out. Its worth mentioning that although the other alternatives cost money to participate, street jelly is unique in the fact that you can EARN money by playing there. One guy said recently that he's earned over $400 this year. That's not a lot, but at least his hobby isn't COSTING him anything. (assuming he already had a web cam, mic , etc)

I played my first set on 9/7 and have played a total of 10 shows, all in the 35 minute range. I've made $46* so far -- I am not going to retire on that, but $20 to $40 a month is OK for the product I am offering (ha, ha)!
I am sure folks like Clifton, Image and Family, Lana, Damian,... make more if they play enough sets. Others will make less.
* Of course, you have to get someone like Katy or Clifton in the audience -- they are quite generous with their tipping. ... and yes, I made 60% of the total in the two shows that Katy was in attendance.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that I have also purchased $48 worth of tokens -- so I am actually down $2!!!

With this post coupled with the one where you talk about actual earnings from the site, I can see why you might want to have an exclusive show-time. For a person that's a regular listener on the site, then I can see where your exclusive time might be worthwhile to attract that type of viewer that is there simply to listen to "what's live now?". The folks that I know that use ustream do it simply to provide a more intimate connection with their existing fan-base; I don't know if there's a pay-in option for viewers or not. They use it more as a sort of 'live YouTube' with links to their merch and so forth. I have to admit, the main guy I'm talking about has gone absolutely viral with ridiculous numbers of YouTube subscribers. He signed with Sony earlier this year. Just a few years ago, he was the 2nd guitarist in the worship team at our church. So his gig is kind of different in how he uses online streaming. -Scott

it really IS like an entry-level open mic night. I finally checked out SJ and also the other (2) sites mentioned. I've watched many over the last few days. The above comment is how I see it. As also stated it's 'not for everyone'. For those that are totally confident/comfortable in their song writing and solo performance abilities this live streaming technology is pretty incredible. Good luck to all with their endeavors. Carry on....

I fear that we will see too much of that abuse in the future. Isn't that what Skype is for?

I noticed the very same thing more than once over a few days. Personally, as with many here, I played in live bands for many years doing pretty much all original material (except for a few select covers). So, if I ever thought that I (or my material) was good enough to participate in a venue of that nature I would make sure that I could actually perform my original material as close to perfect as possible without the idle banter. But, that's just me.  EDIT: did I mention I'd be just short of terrified to perform solo and not have my guitar and/or my trap set while in a band to hide behind. Carry on....
