Hi guys,
I am using BIAB to create backing tracks to fill the gap for musicians I don't have at church. I read through many forum entries and find several topics on volume, but I can't seem to nail this down. I want to make this simple (if possible) and also be able to play the songs back by using some sort of foot pedal.

Currently I am exporting all my songs to stereo wav and them moving them to my loop pedal. This way I can perform the following task - start/stop and move forward/backward through my song list. The only problem is my volumes sometimes vary. I thought about using a volume pedal to help adjust, but at this point I really just need to concentrate on singing/playing and leading worship and not dancing around with pedals.

Any ideas on getting the volume levels to all be equal on each song I export?

I have found that it is of utmost importance to get your computer Sound Device Settings set properly - and then making sure those settings are not changed - to get consistent results.

The Recording Input Faders are one setting, the Playback Volume faders are another and, depending upon sound device type and software, can affect the overall volume of your songs, both when Rendering or creating the files and also when playing things back through a PA system.

The Master Playback fader for the sound device (software mixer), I typically tunr that ALL THE WAY UP and leave it there. However, for certain aftermarket sound devices, that may be too much, but I never have found one where the Master Fader should not be at about 60% of full travel or higher.

When playin back files from any device, PC or whatever, through the PA system or other amplification, I have found the same thing to exist. Line likes to be DRIVEN as opposed to sending an anemic signal and then trying to turn it up at the amplifier end, which does indeed change both EQ and add noise to the signal. Tuen the device's output volume up high, but not into Clipping, then turn the amplifier's volume down to suit. This yields the full sound.

For this type of work it is necessary for us to "normalize" out computer sound system. I avoid using the software fader to control the volume of what I hear while working on songs. It stays all the way up, and I use the hardware volume control at my monitoring system to adjust for level in the room.

Using the Software Fader in the computer to adjust volume n the room also affects volume of Renders.

Thanks so much for your quick reply Mac!

I am not typically recording any audio in, only using the supplied real tracks to create a backing track. I am not sure I am clear on understanding your explanations. I am fairly new with BIAB and not sure about all the settings. Please correct me if I am wrong. Referring to the comment about the faders;

- When you say "master playback" are you referring to what I see under Audio - "playback mixer/Playback VU meter" in BIAB?

Or maybe

- Click on the icon in BIAB for "Mixer" and adjust the "combo" to the far right position?

Next, when I go to "Render to Audio file" do I leave the settings "as is"?

Like I said, I am kind of new to this. I can create a great backing track, just want to make sure I get the output levels equal from song to song.

Would there be another program in which I could export and do this better? As an example Real Band, one of the Cakewalk programs or even Ableton? I only look for a second program to "Play" or fine tune the tracks. No additional recording will be done.

I'm referring to your computer sound device's Software Mixer applet.

It is not inside BiaB, but all sounds, including those made by BB, must go through it.

If you are using a Windows system with the built in soundcard, the Playback mixer I'm referring to can be accessed by doubleclicking the little Speaker icon in the taskbar.

If you are using an aftermarket sound device, it likely has its own Control Panel somewhere, consult the documentation for that device to find out how to access and use it, get to know it.

As for whether or not the end product is used to make soundfiles such as mp3 format, or used live direct into a PA sysrem makes no difference. My system is normalized by setting those key controls and it does not matter, live or mp3 or wav or wma format, the playback sounds identical.

Of course, different songs using different Styles and Realtracks will indeed have different levels. This could be because a perticualar song has fewer instruments, or instruments that are just not typically loud instruments, etc. For those it may be necessary to first adjust the BB Mix accordingly and save the song with those adjustments intact.
