What happened to them?

I recently clicked on "What Add-ons do I have", in the BB Help Menu, and was surprised to read that a few of the soloist sets were missing. I thought that was probably a mistake, as I have installed Ultrapak 2009. and had installed the Superpaks for a few years previous to that.

As the Ultrapak (and Superpak in previous years) included all Styles, all RealTracks and RealDrums, I assumed that it included all soloists sets as well.

In looking at the web page with the upgrade packages, I was surprised to see that the Ultra Pak (and Super Pak) include Soloists 1-11, and 16-20, apparently most of the soloist sets, but leaving off sets 12-15. None of the packages included all of the soloist sets, except the "everything pak". (Previously, the only difference I had noticed between that and the ultra pak were the inclusion of "songs and lessons pak", of which I had all or most items in any case.)

One would think though, that packages that include all RealTracks and RealDrums, would also include all soloists, but apparently not. Why these few in the middle were not included, is a mystery to me.

Then I looked at the list of soloist sets available for sale separately. I was surprised to see that 12-15 are not even listed there as being available at all.

So, have soloist sets 12-15 been completely discontinued? If so, why? If they are available in the "everything" pak, why aren't they sold separately, as are the other soloist sets? And why aren't they in the Ultra Pak?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

I had them from before but they are not in my UltraPak either. I also checked the 'purchase soloists' page when I read the install instructions, thinking the same as you, and I agree that it does not seem possible to buy them separately. Maybe it is a '60s thing? You had to be there to know about it and if you were then you don't remember. If you have had everything before, then I suggest you double check your backup copies.

I can tell you though that they are as follows:

Soloist 12 - Andy Laverne Mainstream
Soloist 13 - Andy Laverne Pentatonic
Soloist 14 - Jeff Lorber Fusion
Soloist 15 - Jeff Lorber Guitar

If these don't sound like something you might ever need, I would forget about it

I looked again at the purchase page, and those four are available for purchase, just not with the soloist numbers. They are listed separate from the others, as the "Artist Soloist Series".

So I guess they are available separately, and as part of the "everything pak".

I'm not sure I had them before, although I will look in backup copies, etc., as you suggest. Having purchased BIAB and its yearly updates from the early DOS days, the Superpak for the last few years, and the Ultrapak this year, I thought I had everything. Surprised to see that four specific soloists would be left out.

How did you get them from before? Did you get them in a Superpak, or had you purchased them separately?

The LaVerne ones look interesting to me from the descriptions, although I didn't have a chance to listen to the demos yet. I will, to see what I am missing. (The Lorber ones do not sound interesting to me--I'm not much into "fusion".) How do you like those soloist sets?

I still think that in an "Ultrapak" that includes all styles, all Melodist sets, all RealDrums, all RealTracks, that all soloists should be included as well. I don't know why those specific four soloists were left out.

If I recall correctly, this is not a new issue. These soloist sets have always been extra for-pay add-ons. Perhaps they were included in some bonus pak along the way, but I have just about everything and I don't have these.

Maiki, I have to wonder why you spend so much time exploring what you think are inconsistencies in the PG Music upgrades. Did they wrong you somewhere along the way? They are now producing so many products that it indeed would be difficult to construct a price schedule for all the possible permutations of what someone could buy and then upgrade. The answer has always been simple: call them, describe what you have, and ask. This is the fairest company I have ever known. And if they happen to get a few extra bucks from lumping several combinations into a smaller price list, I'm happy to support them.

All this time should be spend making music, not writing and reading these quibbling threads. Just a thought.

Hello Matt,

Of course, all time writing to any internet discussion group, in any kind of thread, is time taken away from making music. Sometimes I think I should break my computer!

Most of my posts to these forums have not been about the upgrade packages. However, this is the time of year to upgrade, and if I have had questions about the packages, or opinions about them-- this is the place to ask questions and express opinions, regarding anything related to BB, correct?

I was just surprised to notice that I didn't have those soloists, so I asked about them. Nothing wrong with that IMO, regardless of whether you consider the thread to be "quibbling".

I now think I do have the LaVerne packages. On an older computer, with which I have been having audio problems, and did not yet install the 2009 package, I clicked on "what add-ons do I have", and the LaVerne soloists were listed there (not Lorber though).

Due to the audio problems, I did not try them out, but exited BIAB. But I will look on the files in that BB folder, and see if I can find them, and transfer them to the other computer, or look in the backup directories of the other.

So, I think at least the two Lavernes (perhaps the Lorbers too, and I didn't install them) were probably included in the Superpaks of other years, but not in anything but "everything" this year.

This is why I always install the new BIAB on top of the previous BIAB. That preserves all the add-ons I have accumulated over the years. If you did receive those four soloists in a previous version, I would just install that version and then install the new BB2009 on top of that. If you do that, don't forget to install the latest patch updates as well.

Maiki, check with PG Support. If you have had them and lost them, I am sure they will give you a link to re-download them

These have never been in the MegaPAK or SuperPAK. You may have got these in bonus paks in past specials, or you may have got them in previous version UltraPAK (which was previously the "top pak"). You can copy these files from your old folder to the new one

AL_Mains.ST2
AL_Pent.ST2
JL_Fusn.ST2
JL_Guit.ST2

Also, "Soloist xx demos..." subfolders could be copied.

Thanks, Andrew.

I'm pretty sure I didn't buy them separately, but I got them (at least the LaVerne), with some package. I guess they could have come in one of the " 12 pak bonus" sets with one of the yearly upgrades, or I might have paid extra for 24 pak some year, something like that.

Yes, I found those AL files on the HDD of the old computer, and the folders with demos, and will copy them to the new installation. That will be much easier for searching for them on CDs. (Even then, I wouldn't have any idea which installation file would include them, 24 pak or whatever.) So, it will be simple this way.

I'm curious though (being a curious person, although I might be accused of "quibbling" again), why, when all the other soloists have been included in Super and Ultra paks, are just those particular four not included? Do commissions on them have to be paid to those two artists, therefore more expensive to produce than the other soloists?

Also, one suggestion for the future:

One reason I was surprised, is that I thought I had these soloists (at least one) before, so was surprised to see neither, after the 2009 upgrade.

The upgrade installation should, IMO, see what one already has installed, and if that is not included in the new installation, leave the originals untouched, still in the same folder, when it installs the new files. If one already has something that is also in the new installation, then no harm if the new overwrites the old. (And if it has been updated in some way, important to do so.) But files that one already has installed, not included in the new installation package, should not be removed from the installation.

Just my two cents, a suggestion for next time you create new installers.

Edit--just occurred to me--of course, when one gets the new pak already installed on its own hard drive, it will not know what you have already installed on a different hard drive.

In my case, however, I have the hard drive Ultrapak 2009 coming in the mail, but haven't yet received it. I have however, downloaded the main 2009 UP installation, and some of the RealTracks, from the link given to me at purchase. So, I have installed these to my hard drive, to the same c:\bb installation where I have had BIAB installed for years. Those artist soloist paks (Laverne, at least) were part of that installation before I installed 2009, but were missing after installing 2009 over it. IMO, the installer should be careful not to uninstall any add-ins already present.

In all these years BIAB has never removed anything that I already had installed nor any of my songfiles at all when I just install the new version right overtop the old one in the bb folder. That includes the 2009 version. -- and more than a few beta testing versions.

Hello:

The Artist soloist series has never been included in the SuperPak. It was available in the UltraPak up until 2009 and since the release of 2009, has been available in the EverythingPak. The sets can be purchased separately for $29 each and have their own web page that can be accessed at this link http://www.pgmusic.com/products_art.htm.

Hi paolodp,

Soloists sets 12 - 15 have never been included in package deals (e.g. UltraPlusPak, EverythingPak, etc.). They have always been add-ons that people buy separately.

A couple of times over the years I've been visiting these forums, they have been made available on special bonus packages that have sometimes come out when a new version of BIAB arrives. That's not a regular event though.

The files can be found for sale at the below link.

Nope, these sets has never been part of any pack as far as know, matter of fact, I bought long time ago the Andy Laverne Mainstream one and am about to buy the Pentatonic and the Fusion ones. I don't think this is something one never use as someone suggested, I think they are excellent soloists, so I use them in my products quite often.
Thought I put my two cents on this one.

Three it's more like five years - last Xmas this came up (again) so I dug through my records and uncovered that "Jeff and Andy" were offered in 2007 "for a few bucks more:"

Those two were ADDITIONAL add-ons in BIAB 2007 - there were three additional add-on/plus up paks that year: 12, 17, and 25 PAK .

Jeff Lober was part of the 25 pak add-on and Andy Laverne was part of the 17-pak and they have not been offered in any "Ultra" OR "Everything" bundles or "additional plus up paks" since.

but as mentioned previously PG does sale them
