I wish this was a joke, but it isn't.

I was listening to the morning news this morning while I was eating breakfast. The anchor reported that gunshots had rung out in a Birmingham apartment complex Saturday night and that one man was dead. The gunfire had culminated a heated argument over the Alabama-Auburn game. I'm sitting there thinking, "How stupid getting into a fight over a sporting event".

Later on in the newscast, while I'm putting my coffee cup in the dishwasher, they run a clip of an interview with the dead man's sister. In the interview she rags on the media for getting it all wrong, they were NOT arguing about the UA-AU football game. "Thank goodness the media got it wrong", I thought, "I'd like to think that folks haven't sunk that low".

As I was closing the door to the dishwasher, the sister concluded the interview with, "They were fighting over the Miami Heat game".

For the 40+ years I lived in Detroit, it was pretty easy to ignore the Lions. Living in Colorado, it's pretty hard to ignore the Broncos, particularly these past few seasons.

One just needs to avoid placing their identity with something so meaningless as a sports team.

Music and its Performance is my sport.

And, as I've said around here before, it is indeed a Contact Sport that can be most brutal at times.

I never understood anyone getting wrapped up in a sports team, ...unless of course their child was on the team.

Whichever team it is, it's nothing but a group of thugs, rapists, drug addicts, steroid users and domestic abusers who just happen to be able to play ball.

So we take the worst that humanity has to offer, (ball players), give them millions of dollars and steroids to make them bigger, meaner and even more stupid!

Then they score a touchdown. ... Whoop tee sh*t! LOL.

P.S. Let's not forget to call them HEROES!!!

Alabama is the only place I know where local TV weathermen get death threats for interrupting college football games with tornado warnings.

A University of Alabama football fan has been convicted of poisoning the famous oak trees at Toomer's Corner in Auburn, Alabama (home of AU's primary rival). The trees were noted for being toilet-papered after an Auburn University win. The man has been ordered to pay some $800,000 in restitution. I found that a little odd; the school made plenty of money selling seedlings from the trees. Presumably the judge was an Auburn fan, too.

Lest I be accused of stereotyping, or even making it up, this is observed behavior. I spent my early childhood in Alabama and the last 36 years in Georgia. I accept a certain extremism with many sports, but the degree of madness associated with the fanaticism in Alabama in particular is mind boggling.

Ryszard, again, I think it is a case of mass misplaced identity. There's a vacuum needing filled.

I heard the same story on radio station KMJ Fresno CA. The football teams were San Jose State and Fresno State and the location was the central valley California but I don't recall the NBA team.

Yeah, BobC posted link to basically the same story as I read.

OP used the term, "man" up there, that's probably what led me to that thinking until I read the actual story.

I guess it means that the womenfolk really have come a long way, baby as the old cigarette ad used to say.

Just a small matter of movement in the wrong direction...

Let's be careful out there.

Can you still say cigarette - I thought THAT was a capital crime (or is it just a PC hate crime)?
