Included with my 2014 update[Everything Pak.], was a code containing 24 numbers. This allows me to install on three computers in my home. Fair enough I suppose, although I have 4. I have in the past carried a USB drive to a friends home. Using his desk top and sound system. This saves me time and less chance of dropping an expensive i7. Since I chose the HD option this time for this reason, can I still plug and play as I have for the past 5 years? -------Leon confused

That's a good and fair question, Leon, that didn't come up in testing. If it doesn't get answered here by PG Music staff, give Support a call and post the answer.

We have been told elsewhere that they are not trying to inconvenience legitimate users, and you can call them to explain and request more codes. This could help you if the code is tied to the PC rather than the supplied hard drive, even if not installed on the PC. I don't think we know yet how that is handled.

Addendum: Andrew just reminded us you can release an activation and restore it on another machine.

YES.

And, if you carry your USB copy to your friend's computer, you can still just plug it in and proceed, when the Activation prompt comes up, simply hit that "Not Now" button - and the program is fully functional for 30 days anyway, with the same popup appearing at each startup informing how many days are left on that.

not sure this is much reassurance as you might want to visit your friend again next month and this "trick" likely will not work beyond the initial 30 days!

doesn't bother me all that much as I only use BIAB on a single computer but it sounds like the good old days of moving a hard drive around are pretty much over.

my biggest complaint with this sort of scheme is it is intrusive and inconvenient to legit users and adds complexity to the product that in no way enhances its primary functionality. and I know all about software thievery yada yada yada but still do not like to see this.

JohnJohnJohn,

If you have a special circumstance like that one, contact PGMusic directly and ask 'em real nice.

Try to pay attention to fulfilling that, "real nice" part.

They aren't out to limit their good paying customers...

I've been doing this kind of activation with Melodyne for several years and have not gotten much heartburn with it. Celemony only permits 2 activations. I keep one activation available for times when I'm at a computer other than my desktop and deactivate immediately when finishing work on an alternate machine. It beats a dongle.

baloney Mac! every "good paying customer" now receives this limit by default with 2014!

as I stated clearly, it doesn't bother me that much because of how I use the software but it is still a limit that was not there before. you don't have to try and put lipstick on every pig, dude! smile

I just related to you what Peter Gannon himself told us during the beta.

You can call what he told me baloney if you like.

Personally, I've known Dr. Gannon for quite a long time now and have found him and his word to be absolutely trustworthy.

So I stand by what I typed up there.

If you have an extenuating circumstance requiring you to run BB on a 4th compouter, contact PGMusic directly and very nicely ask them if they can accomodate your particular instance.

But since you have already insinuated here that I was lying to you, I think you may have a little trouble with that asking them nicely part...

I didn't say you were lying...you're just putting a positive spin on a new restriction introduced with 2014. If it looks like a duck...

What PG Music should consider is to tie the registration to up to 3 computers (as they have done) or to the hard drive on which BIAB is installed. So those who don't use portable hard drives can still install it on up to 3 computers and those that do use portable drives can move the program around to different computers without the 3 computer restriction. Other companies like Plugin Alliance use this method -- they allow 3 devices to be activated, which can be any combination of computers and/or flash drives. So everyone who likes the new 3-computer limitation can continue to use that, but those who use more computers (like me) retain the flexibility to move the program to the computer I'm using. The release/restore utility certain alleviates some of the problem, but it is itself limited to a certain # of releases/restores so it's not the ultimate solution for those who use portable drives.

Mac, I don't see that John is calling you a liar. PG Music is "by default" limiting customers to 3 installs.

Even if I "ask 'em real nice", there's still going to be a limit.

A limit is a limit, even when it's completely reasonable.

And thanks for your helpful information on this new release! It's appreciated.

You mean you have more than 3 computers setup with interfaces and all the plugins? why? what's the point?

How does one get anything done with constantly fiddling with any changes and setup differences from system to system.

What i suspect is that what most folks mean it they work on different computers in different places like home, work, colab friends houses. All understandable.

I have mine on two computers a desktop and a laptop, and i keep the hard drive as back up. But i can see why folks want to be free from restrictions, but my guess is this get seriously abused on a very large scale.

If you want to travel around with it, i bet one of your computers is a nice powerful laptop. Those things travel pretty nicely.

For my entire life, a statement like that has always meant that the other person is saying that you are lying, or at least questioning your integrity.

Ok John. I remember I helped you out in making the decision to use Biab last year and you were appreciative. That's a good thing. However, this is one of my biggest pet peeves. Saying something important is intrusive and inconvenient and you basically hate it without offering an alternative.

What you're doing is called bomb throwing. It's easy to criticize but much harder to include a good idea that addresses everybody's concerns to go along with the criticism.

You're usually pretty reasonable so here's the question: What's your alternative security method for PG to use since you "know all about software thievery"?

And my 2nd biggest pet peeve in situations like this is when someone answers that question by saying this:
"I don't know but this method certainly isn't it!"

That's not an answer.

Bob

Just talked with Andrew and there is no limit on the amount of times you can activate/deactivate/reactivate.Just can't have more then 3 machines activated at once.

one of my pet peeves is when someone attempts to disqualify the inputs of others by requiring them to also solve the problem they have observed! laugh it is completely legit to observe and comment on a problem regardless of whether or not you have any solution to offer!

but since you asked...I'd prefer they used the same methods they have used for the past 24 years! software piracy didn't start in 2013 but somehow they have managed to do pretty well. laugh

oh and BTW I still appreciate your help last year and throughout this year!

Robh, I didn't say that I worked on 4 computers. How do I get anything done? Very simple really. I have my primary copy of BB and RB on the i7 HP. Also Studio One, Reaper, e.t.c. The LapTop is mounted on a stand with several gismos velcroed here and there. My set lists are created here. I also have a Sony desktop in my bedroom, another Sony laptop at a desk near my HP laptop. My wife has a Sony laptop Version 7, plus a Toshiba All In One version 7 in her bedroom. I have access to all of the fore mentioned computers to use, for what ever I am doing, whether it is copying, printing or listening to BIAB files. The hard drive is portable and in the past I could use it when ever and where ever there was a computer handy. I do not compose, edit or record for other people. BIAB is hobby, and I treat it as such. On a 500 gb USB3 hard drive I have my second copy of BIAB with all of the same set lists, folders, [thousands of songs I have downloaded]. If I am in my bedroom an hear something that needs to be changed, I can make those changes, save it ,freeze it--Done. Why in hell would I want to tear down, load, unload, set up, tear down, load, get home unload, carry in , set up. Whewwwwww, I am exhausted just thinking about it. Why not just un velco the HD, load the bass and go have some fun with Jimmy? I am not pleased with the new rules but I will live with it.------Leon

Leon: my setup is exactly like yours. Multiple computers throughout the house, shared with my other family members, and I want to be able to use BIAB on whatever computer I'm at. I get it that many don't have this need, but for those of us who do and have been using BIAB this way for years (I've been using BIAB since the early 1990s), this is quite a change.
