I've alway felt with my limited BIAB experience that the recorded sounds are not as good as proper studio recorded instruments. That seems a strange thing to say considering PG Music market their products on professional musicians recorded in studios. But watching some videos on Youtube and I came across this one where the back instruments in Pro Tools sound more realistic than the recording in BIAB. One advantage I see is that in the video each drum has its own channel in Pro Tools, something BIAB doesn't yet do.

The guy is demoing 3x mics and plays them in Pro Tools. Listen from 5min 41sec onwards
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l16XuNNJEk4

The bass is punchy, the drums is clean and life like as if you were sitting in a room watching the band play live. Now that is what I'm looking for in BIAB but sadly is doesn't deliver. Could is be (in part) because I don't have the Audiophile edition?

Paul,

Listen to some of the music I have on my page. Follow the link in my signature.

All of the music (with some exception) is BB/RB and sounds good, if I do say so myself.

I too thought the same thing originally, but I have learned, that is not the case. You don't necessarily need the Audiophile version to get good tracks.

The 2 things you mentioned are totally available from your current version.... if you know what to do and how to do it.

Let me say that some of the instruments do sound better if rendered in a specific key and tempo. If you are too far off from the tempo and key they were originally sampled in, it will have some artifacts that make it sound a bit strange. Lead guitars and other solo instruments are particularly sensitive to this so be aware.

Drums and bass don't suffer as bad from that issue.

The way to get that punch and kick and sparkle is to not simply use the tracks straight out of BB/RB. You need to use EQ and compression to get the punch and the sparkle that bring the tracks to life and make them sound like a player in the room that was mic'd. It's amazing what a simple EQ dropped into a bass track or a drum track can do for it's sound.

I use Sonar for mixing my music, and every drum track has a little custom EQ preset that I pop in to put the punch into the kick drum and the sizzle into the snare and cymbals. It makes a huge difference. Same thing pretty much applies to the other instruments as well. I use EQ and compression to get the sound I need.

Not only do I use the FX in the tracks, but also at times in the busses and especially in the master bus.

Hope this helps get you pointed in the right direction. Give it a try.

I think I have found how to get better quality in BIAB. Use something like EZdrummer VST to replace BIAB drums. They also do EZkeys where you can add piano and keyboards quite easily, these two alone would really boost BIAB recordings I think.

Hi Paul,

That's interesting about the EZ products. I have EZ drums and haven't used it a great deal. That being said, though, many of the BIAB MIDI styles have great drum patterns in them.

I'm going to experiment!

Noel

Hi Paul

I have been playing with BIAB for ten years or so and with the event of Real Tracks I have found a whole
new world of music prodution. I use BIAB to generate wave files of all the instruments I want to use
in a project and render them to wave files, removing all pan and reverb on all instruments.ie 0 pan and 0 reverb. I then import all those files to the DAW I use called Reaper..by the way I allow BIAB to generate
a two bar intro to all tracks which is very important if you want to add live tracks ie, guitar, vocals etc.
I then use Reaper to add effects to all the tracks I need to, bearing in mind that all the Real Tracks have
been recorded under the best studio conditions. I have included a link to a song that I dug out of the
BIAB demos and made a few changes too and made into an instrumental piece with Sax and Guitar as the lead
instruments.

Hope this helps,

Regards
