I bought the 2009 version of BIAB but immediately had a problem, in that when clicking S and going to "Bar settings" and then clicking Style or Open and choosing a style and clicking OK-OK, no style is registered (and no box appears at the bar number). At the same time "Redo delete bars" appears on the edit menu even when no bars have been deleted. I have found this happens in any song.

As this makes it impossible to do what I want to do, I would like to revert to BIAB 2008, where I had less significant glitches and could work around them. To revert, do I simply reinstall 2008 from the disk or would that cause other problems?

Grateful for advice.
Chris

Since posting the above, I have returned to factory settings (as reading other posts I note Mac recommends this) but it did not solve the problem.

Do you have "system restore" on your Windows computer? If so that might be a good option if you have a restore date previous to your installation of the new BiaB.

It's too late for this advice, but not for the future....

Before installing any new program, I back up my computer making a "disk image" on a USB drive using Norton Ghost (other imaging programs will do this). That way if the new program does anything to my computer that I don't like, and if System Restore fails, I can return my computer to a previous state. It has saved my @$$ quite a few times in the past.

Even though my last name is Norton, I have no connection whatsoever to Norton Ghost or any other Symantec products (unfortunately)

Before reverting to 2008 I would suggest you contact the PGMusic support team. I have not seen the problems you describe here and many other people have already upgraded to 2009 without problem.

It would be a shame to revert back to 2008 when it is probably something the techies can figure out in short order. Not sure if they are around on the weekend though??

Thanks for both answers. Normally I would not think so quickly of reverting to 2008 but the tech people were unable to solve the problems I had with previous versions (of which these latest ones seem like an amplification). I will report the issue to them, of course.

Hi Chris,

What is your setup, i.e.; OS - processor, memory and such?

I too agree that it would be a shame to revert back to 2008 from 2009... there has to be a way to make the new version work. Without having more details about your system, it's really hard to pin point what the problem might be.

IF you absolutely have to go back to the 2008 version, do you still have the install for that version? If so, it's a simple matter of deleting the bb directory from your HD, then install 2008. Should work just fine as BIAB is not written to the registry (if you're using a Windows OS).

I would still look further into this, as BIAB 2009 is a GEM ... best yet that Peter and company have come out with.

Cheers.
Mike

Cheers,
Mike

What build are you using of Band-in-a-Box 2009? The latest is 282.
http://www.pgmusic.com/support_windowsupdates.htm#282

Build 281 (and higher) fixes the specific problem that you mention.

I'd suggest trying to RE-install again, right overtop first. No need to uninstall with BIAB.

Often clears up a multitude of sins, worth a try IMO.

Also, try turning your Virus Scanner off temporarily while doing the install, some Virus Scanners manage to block certain files in a BIAB install. If you are concerned about virus on the installation files, use your Virus program to manually scan the files in the whole folder before installing.

I tried Mac's suggestion but the problem I outlined in my first post above was still there after re-install.

Some details:
Computer : Desktop Dell Dimension 5150C. Pentium (R) CPU 2.80 GHz 2.79 GHz 504MB of RAM. Operating system: Windows XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2
Sound card: Roland VSC DXi appears under Synth/Soundcard in MIDI Driver Setup
In Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices:
Sound Recording device: Sigma tel Audio
Sound Playback device: Sigma tel Audio
Default device: same
MIDI Music Playback: default is Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth

I wrote to the techies on June 1 as follows:

I have had recurrent glitches with BIAB of the following kinds:
> 1) "Undo delete bar" on edit menu when no bars deleted.
> 2) No song start until arrow clicked twice.
> 3) When opening a song, the opened song often then immediately drops out
> of sight and has to be brought up again.
> 4) Melody and soloist step edit window colors become dense blue (with text
> hard to see) after clicking "update".
>

> normal.

The brief answer I was given was: “Any time you change a chord in Band-in-a-Box the options under Edit to Undo Delete Bars will appear.” Since then, I have just tried to work around the problems, but these have increased or amplified since 2009 installation (received in post 3 days ago, installed soon after), even after returning to factory settings. If these symptoms are so unusual, I am now wondering if the original BIAB disk I received was defective and whether it would be best to save all songs on data CD, cleanse the computer of all BIAB and install BIAB as a new beginner!

I'd boost the memory to 1 gig. Shouldn't cost much at all, like less than $20. I'd go to 2 gigs if possible. You can't buy a system any more here without getting at least 1 gig of memory thrown in.

Check the Performance by Cntrl + Delete + Alt for the Task Manager. I am just using the Internet Browser and I am using 370 mbs of Ram. I loaded in my normal set of development programs which include BIAB/RealBand and Ram usage has increased to 915mbs before any processing. I would suggest that you upgrade Ram to 2 gigs at least.

Hello Chris,

Can you confirm that you are using Build 281 or higher? You can find out by going to Help menu | About Band-in-a-Box.

Hi Andrew,

No. I seem to be still on 2009 (279). Sorry not to have answered earlier. The reason is that I had an additional trouble with BIAB 2009 i.e. when changing instruments at a bar. For example, I specify 90/1 (Pad 2a sine pad) and click for that but the soloist that plays is 90 (Pad-warm, slow) and when I reopen the "Edit settings for bar" box, I find that 90 is displayed. I tried this many times with different instruments and each time, the "slash" instrument was replaced by the "non-slash" one. Since I was having so many problems I stopped doing music and wrote lyrics for a month! Now that I'm back I'm ready to upgrade but I'll wait for your advice on that.

But - but - Peter Gannon said Build #281 or higher fixed your initial problem. I recommend following his advice.

One nice trick about BIAB is that they keep the backup BBW.EXE files for past 2009 builds in the \BB\bb2009_backup folder. You have nothing to lose because if you check the date of the most recent one before updating, all you need to do to revert afterward is copy that file up a level. No worries about Norton or Ghost or Acronis or whatever other backup scheme you use.

Go ahead and upgrade here: http://www.pgmusic.com/support_windowsupdates.htm#282

Difinately update teh version, but really get more ram. 512 ram is barely enough with XP period, add the strain for a DAW and it is critcal.
