I'm a new user of BIAB & RealBand 2009. BIAB works fine but EVERY TIME I try to open RealBand, it analyzes my sound card etc. and opens the Midi Driver setup window. No matter what I try or what settings I select, once I click OK, it freezes and the only button which functions is the Exit (red X) button. Next time I try to open again, it tells me I crashed the last time and do I want to revert to defaults for a safe boot. This happens every time; can anyone help?

We would need to know a bunch about your setup. What sound card, what Operating System, what CPU speed, ram amount?

You aren't trying to run RB while BB is minimized and using the same soundcard and synth, are you? If so, try closing down BB completely before starting RB.

If all else fails, try reinstalling RB right overtop of itself. This can often sort out corrupted files and such.

Running Windows XP Home SP3; Intel 2.6 GHz processor; 80 GB hard drive; 512 MB ram; Microsoft GS Wavetable SW synth; Yamaha USB Midi interface. Hope this helps.
Thanks Robh

Hi Mac,
When I try to use RB, it's completely on its own. I've also tried reinstalling twice with the same results.
Thanks for helping.

80 g hard drive and "only" 512 ram.

How much free space is left on that drive? Pushing it towards the limits can do this.

Try a disk cleanup then disk defrag first, but you will likely be much happier with at least 1g of DDR ram and also a larger hard drive if you can.

Yeah, I figured I was pushing the envelope; I should at least double my ram. Thanks for the help.

FYI, I found a conflict with an ".exe" process that's part of the "Dell Support Center" software. I removed it and RB is working like a charm!
Thanks for all your help, everybody...

The process is a startup item called "sprtcmd.exe"

It can be disabled with the System Configuration Utility (Start | Run, type 'msconfig', click on Startup, and un-check the item).

If you look it up on Google, you can find out if it is important or not (it does not appear to be important as far as I have seen, and in some cases it is reported as being 18% dangerous).

My nephew is an IT pro and I've heard him talk about this. The first thing he does if he gets involved with family or friends name brand PC's is to strip out all that stuff. I haven't heard too many complaints with Dell's but the old Compaq's really loaded up the OS with stuff like this. This is another reason I keep building my PC's from scratch when it's time to upgrade. The prices have come down so much with the name brands it not so much about saving money now, it's the fact that I can do a little research to find out what's the specifications du jour for building a DAW. Just look at some of the audio websites and there's always tips about how a certain mb/cpu/memory combo seems to work a little better than that one and once I've figured all that out, order the parts from Newegg and put it together. There really isn't much to it, if you can put a hinge on a kitchen cabinet, you can build a PC.

I buy name brand PCs, but if the use is for DAW work, I simply wipe the disk and install nothing but the OS first. This can represent quite the savings in time and money, but one should research whatever OEM they are looking at carefully before taking the plunge.

Do you get an actual OS disc? I've always thought brand name PC's have the OS preinstalled and you only get a recovery disc, not the actual OS so what are you using to reinstall it?

Aw, c'mon, of course I have a full OS install disk handy.

You can use the COA from the OEM machine with it.

Look at it this way, if you built from scratch you'd still have to spend the money on the full OS disk.

I have found one can save money by purchasing the selected OEM puter, maybe a beefier PSU and another hard drive plus more ram, and that OS disk.

Nothing against the scratch build, mind you.

I'm encountering frequent crashes and lockups with RealBand lately. When I first started using it the program was very robust, but now it's occasionally freezing at both start up and RealTrack selection. I'll keep notes and post more details later.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
