Everytime I click on BiaB to start it I get: Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to your cmoputer? Then you have to click yes. My other programs don't make me always click yes to that question. Can I make it to where I don't have to do that? I would rather not do it. It seems like I almost have to install it in a sense every time I open it.

It can do that if you've installed bb to Program Files folder. The newer Windows Systems don't like to just let a program do Writes, but BB is one program that has to be able to do that. If you did install to Program Files, you can just copy the entire bb folder to another location and then delete the one in the Program Files folder, since BB itself does not write to Windows Registry.

You might also see that happen even if BB is installed elsewhere, but your Virus Protection software is set too high to allow BB to write to drive. Sometimes you can tell a Virus Program to Trust a selected program like BB.

... and If the shortcut is set to "Run As Administrator", then you will get that message also. It is no big deal.

Hi, no it is installed to C:\bb and it isn't the virus protector. It is a Windows setting set to notify me when a program tries to make changes to my computer. I would like to keep it on that level. Too bad I couldn't make an exception for it. I don't know why BiaB does it and not others. RealBand doesn't show the emblem of the security logo on the lower right of the icon like BiaB does but it still gives me the same question do you want the following program to make changes to this computer. I wonder why other programs don't usually do this? It would seem like I can go to my firewall and put an exception in but I don't think I can. It isn't that much extra work to click it but I wish I didn't have to do it. Thank you both for your reply

Hi Sly
Try this, it might work:
Although it's interesting that you have a security logo attached to the icon. is it a 'Windows/Microsoft' logo or a Virus protection company's logo?

It is like plate of armor. Yellow/Orange and Blue I think it is from Windows security. I did what you said and chose to run as administrator. But it still does the same thing. Makes me select yes to make changes to my computer. That is odd that you don't have that security badge on your icon

Actually: That is odd that you have that security badge on your icon

I wonder are you running BIAB from the PG Music supplied removable USB drive, or directly from your computer hard drive?

How many user accounts does the computer have, and are you perhaps running from a non-privileged account instead of the account with administrator privileges?

You could change the UAC setting but I don't think this should be necessary (I always have mine OFF, but that is my personal choice, otherwise, for me, its like trying to use the computer wearing handcuffs).

Someone else must have seen this problem I hope.

Yes Sly, that's windows. I have it on both Biab and RB. Memory tells me that when I installed 2013 on this win 8 machine, it crashed too often so I changed it to run as admin. That cured the problems (well most of them..lol). It isn't a problem unless it bothers you to click the 'yes' button, in which case, change it as suggested above.

Note: I haven't tried it on 2014 since I upgraded or win 8.1 since I upgraded the OS, so I may not be getting the crashes now that I was getting.

Hope this helps

BB program is rather unique in that it is a standalone .exe that does not write to Windows Registry or any of that jazz.

At one time, there were plenty of programs that worked in this fashion, BB still does for reasons of what BB has to do in order to be all that it is.

For one thing, this is why we can carry the USB drive from computer to computer and run the main program from the drive without installing anything more than the parts that must write to Windows Registry, which are only the PG Music Fonts, PG Music Plugins and any softstynths you may elect to install.

No I am not running it from my USB hard drive I received from BiaB. I installed it to my C drive. I chose a full 80GB installation. It is only me on this system. I only have one account. That is strange you all don't have that badge. Though it isn't the end of the world to continue to click yes every time. It isn't that much work to do this.

For a couple minutes I changed the security settings and I didn't have to click yes anymore for it to ask permission to make changes to my pc. I will just try and get over it. I just wanted to keep the security as it is but yet have it stop asking me that. But no big deal reall I guess. We will just let this question go. I might have other questions for you to rack your brain on instead of beating this one down.

Sly, I completely understand your desire not to want to use Administrator mode while online. It's a good security practice. However, it's kind of a given that music production and internet security are somewhat mutually incompatible. As a compromise, perhaps you can create an administrator profile for running music software, and disconnect from the internet while doing so. Just a thought.

I am fortunate in having had the luxury of dedicating a PC for use as a DAW, running as an administrator with only Microsoft Essentials and Avast antivirus for security, which are pretty light as far as interfering with other functions. I only go to trusted sites with this machine, mainly those necessary to update my music software or check in on the PG Music forums. For anything riskier I use another PC entirely. Of course, all of my PCs are behind a hardware firewall (Netgear cable modem and router (two separate devices)) as well, which adds another secure layer that doesn't tax any of the PCs' resources.

HTH,

Richard
