Hi Alan,
Very sweet! the mix is good. The melody could need a little syncopation though. The notes are all real straight (no dotted eighth notes etc.)
All in all very relaxing. good job!

The "Alan Sound".
The pure Strat. Every note fretted right behind the metal and never way back on the wood. That big, pure, almost full sinusoidal wave, like Chet Atkins and other purists always got, paying attention to finger position with the ears and not the eyes. No buzz ever, just TONE.
Know the Melody, know the lyrics too, before attempting to record any song melody and you will have a great job like this one in the can in no time.
Sing through your instrument.
Nothing more need be said.

It's a wonderful song. Now, here is my take on it.
1. Three instruments, all apparently lined up directly in front of you on the stage. I know that you've been buying backing tracks, but I don't think this one was. I could be wrong. Move the backing guitar off to the right, and move the strings to the left. Use the pan controls for each track, and set it to 64 for each, as a place to start. It fills out the soundstage, and allows you to 'see' the instruments. In a mix, now, I've taken to wearing a pair of headphones, closing my eyes, and pointing to where the instrument is. Then, I remove the headphones, use the speakers, and point again to make sure they're in about the same place.
2. Overall volume. The file, when you were finished was about -12dBFS at it's peak. That means that you've lost about 10dB of dynamic range, which is especially critical if you're playing a soft, lightly instrumented song, because it's possible to hear the noise floor in certain passages. By the way, I did not in this case, but I'm just saying as an FYI. All the tracks should be be recorded at or near 0dB to utilize the full dynamic range of the track. Once you do that, you may have to pull down the individual volume control for the track to fit it in the mix, but that's what the sliders are there for.
3. In this case, I would have put the file in something like Audition, or Audacity, or, even one track in Sonar, and used the 'Normalize' feature. That would bring out the file to a full volume, even though it would have raised the noise floor, but you wouldn't have had 12dB that was missing off the top.
As always, playing was brilliant, and the song was wonderful. Can you tell me if you used a backing track for it, or did you record the strings and guitar yourself?

Nice one Alan great guitar tone and expression, a favourite of mine.
What is your guitar setup re amp/effects were you using a Strat.

OK,the backing was a Midi file that I converted to Audio using Cakewalks Dimension Pro Synth.
There are 3 tracks - Acoustic Guitar and Strings plus my Guitar.
There are no effects used on the tracks,I didn't even Normalise them,oh I tried but that
caused distortion,as if I had recorded them too loud.
Gary,your comments were spot on as usual and I loaded the files back into Sonar again and
Panned the Acoustic 25% Left - Strings 25% Right - my guitar Centered with a slight volume increase.
Yeah,what a difference,I was so trying to get a good sound and balance,I forgot about the Pan.
Well,I said I wasn't very good at mixing,doh!!!

Alan, that was fantastic. That super strat sound that is yours really rings well in this song. That midi backing track was quite good!
If you are getting distortion normalizing in Sonar just back of on the normalization level. The slider defaults at 100%. Also be sure to check out the Sonitus FX: multiband compressor. It can do wonders when not overused.

That is so much nicer. In Sonar 7, each track will show you the peak level at a marker on the track, like -12.2 or something like that. What I'll do is go in and use the Process/Audio/Gain setting and increase the gain of the track. I may only increase it 6 dB, which gives me a little headroom at the end to play with, depending on the number of tracks I have.
That was a sweet piece of music, sir! I commend you.

I've lost track of Alan and was so excited to see this thread resurface this morning.
Last contact, Alan talked of having prostate cancer which was quite advanced. Let's pray that he's still with us if he's not suffering.
He kindly played on some of my tunes and made even me sound professional and that's really saying something.
I remember when he first got his custom-shop Strat, he specified every component which I've long forgotten.
Alan is always first to throw out the lifeline to other guitarists/musicians. Let's pray that he hasn't left the stage.

Yes, I certainly hope he's still around. I seem to remember that he switched from the PC version of BIAB to Mac ????
I once asked him to record Hank Marvin's "Sacha" which he did, and it was beautiful. Sadly I lost my copy when I changed computers after a crash.
I also did a collab with him, that thankfully wasn't lost.

I remember our Russell getting Alan interested in R/C model flying which took him away from music for a long time.
Alan last posted his beautiful rendering of Santo & Johnny's "Sleep Walk" but a recent SSD crash sent it to the ozone layer.
