Hi everyone I have upgraded to BIAB 2014 from v.2013 and since doing so am unable to get my midi keyboard to connect/function.
Windows recognises the keyboard and installs the drivers, so far so good. My keyboard works fine in all other programs (like Sonar), plus standalone plugins, just not in BIAB 2014. I have also tried a friend's midi keyboard connected to my laptop, (to be absolutely certain this is not a hardware issue), but I get the same results. In Opt. Midi/Audio driver set up my keyboard does appear in the left pane (midi input driver) and is highlighted. In the right pane (midi output driver) I have selected, for this example, Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth. The VST DXi box is checked, so is the Route Midi thru to Midi driver.
I have also experimented checking and unchecking these boxes, all to no avail. Furthermore if I open "Big Piano" and click a key with the computer mouse there is movement and sound, it's just that the keyboard inputs fail. The keyboard is recognised and lights up.
I have an older version of BIAB on an old system and when I connect my keyboard there is no problem, it's as simple as plug and play! The 2014 version is fully updated with the latest patches from PG Music.
My system (laptop) is running Windows 7 64 bit.
Any help/support would be so appreciated.

Are you trying to use sounds internal to the keyboard, or are you trying to use the keyboard as a Controller to play sounds from a software synth?

I just want to use the keyboard as a controller.
It has always worked as a "plug and play" in the past....I'm lost on this one! The keyboard is immediately recognised by windows, shows up in the program but there is absolutely nothing happening when I play the keyboard. In all other programs it works fine.
Any ideas, most welcome!

I'm only covering this for completeness and I almost never run MIDI inputs into BIAB so not sure if this is only way.
First, if USB controller make sure it is plugged in and turned on BEFORE opening BIAB (or really any SW that looks to see what MIDI I/O is available).
Next in BIAB in "Opt. > MIDI/Audio driver setup" IN MIDI input devices make sure you select the USB MIDI controller/device or the actual MIDI port (if not USB device)
Then on the right hand side of the same window you have to UNCHECK the "Route MIDI Thru to MIDI Driver" - otherwise input MIDI data goes directly out to the selected MIDI Output Driver selected in the middle of this window -and BAIB never sees it.
Now things can get or be simple:
a). if willing to live with GS wavetable and DELAY from key strike to sound or
b). are going right back out to an actual HW synth of course then you would CHECK the "Route MIDI Thru to MIDI Driver" box mentioned above)
or hard(er) if you:
a). Want to use a VSTi or DXi softsynth and b). Don't know how to use things like MIDIYoke or LoopBe or similar
Let us know exactly what sound source you are trying to trigger with you controller via BIAB (while using BIAB).

First, if USB controller make sure it is plugged in and turned on BEFORE opening BIAB (or really any SW that looks to see what MIDI I/O is available).
This is important, although I do run some softwares that can detect the plugin of USB "on the fly" - Band in a Box is not one of them. I have to make sure that BB is shut down completely, then plug the USB keyboard into the computer, then wait for the OS to recognize it, and then open BB again in order to see and select the USB keyboard input (and output if using that) within BiaB. --Mac

Hi Guys thanks very much for the posts. To answer Larry the Midi output drivers available to me in Opt/Midi/Audio drivers are Microsoft midi mapper, Microsoft GS Wavetable synth, and Coolsoft virtual midi synth. Non of these will work with my midi keyboard. But the main point is the keyboard IS recognised and shows up in the midi input drivers and IS selected. The laptop recognises the keyboard immediately on connection.
I do connect the keyboard prior to opening BIAB
But not only is there NO sound, there's nothings at all. When I tap the keyboard with "Big Piano" pane open there should be a corresponding movement on screen. This must be an issue between BIAB 2014 and connecting a midi keyboard. With past BIAB versions I have not had these issues.
And finally my keyboard works 100% all of the time when I use it with other programs (Ignite, Kontakt 5, Cakewalk Sonar etc)

Try this:
Inside BB, Prefs -> Channels
The default channel for Thru is 5
I prefer setting my keyboard to send on ch 5, or perhaps the generic keyboard Reset to send on ALL channels, done inside the keyboard's menus.
There is a chance your keyboard is set to another single channel and thus BB cannot recognize it at the time.
The clue is that you mentioned that the onscreen keyboard shows nothing when you press keys on your controller.
For testing, you could try each of ther 16 channels in turn inside Prefs - Channels and see if one of them sends to the onscreen keyboard.

Well I've tried all the ideas posted here and still no joy.
I mentioned before that the midi keyboard worked fine on an older system with BIAB 2013. Well I took that old laptop and installed BIAB 2014 on it and then hooked up the midi keyboard. Without missing a beat it worked!! Tap a key and I get sound and the onscreen keys move too. Looking at the Option/settings it's, of course, all default stuff.
Back to my new laptop (the problem one) and even replicating the settings from the old one to the new I still have no success.
The old system is running Windows 7 32 bit. The new system is running Windows 7 64 bit. My laptop is brand new, purchased just before Xmas.
I'll contact PG Music support and if I have any success will re-post back here. It makes no sense to me that this fails to work. Drivers are installed, device shows up in Midi Inputs, but nothing when I try to use it! What is more frustrating is that outside of BIAB (ie using standalone plugins, Sonar etc)I have absolutely no issues. Maybe uninstall BIAB and re-install?
Happy New Year guys!

Update! searching online reveals that this may be an issue within the registry. My keyboard is an M-Audio and it looks like there have been some issues there.
It's New Years Eve and I'm gigging in one hour! Will get back to this tomorrow!

Again not to insult you but did you do as I mentioned about UNCHECKING the route MIDI and making sure that you have the GS Wavetable selected?
"Next in BIAB in "Opt.
Hope you get it and Happy New Year (in spite of this)

Instead of uninstall/reinstall and all that entails, try under the BB Options menu, "Return to Factory Settings" first.
Something might just be scrambled.

I was contacted by PG Support, they just ran me through all the obvious fixes. Outside of that they can't offer any assistance.
Larry I did follow your instructions carefully, it was unsuccessful.
And finally to add insult to injury when I opened Realband and tried to connect (once again the keyboard shows up in midi input drivers & is highlighted) I receive the message "Undefined External Error"
An internet search shows that "Undefined External Error" is an error not uncommon to users of other software (Fruity loops for example) For the hell of it I tried the registry fix provided for this by M-Audio. Didn't work. I guess I'll have to live without BIAB + a keyboard. Thanks for all your help guys. Excellent support forum.

... I receive the message "Undefined External Error" Seeing this new information: That message can happen if you already have another program that uses the MIDI open and try to use BB for the same thing. Other programs that use MIDI should be fully closed, not just minimized. There can be other reasons for the message as well, such as the Driver not being released properly such that the System is still associating it with another program that is indeed now closed down. I would go to the M-Audio website (and the M-Audio factory website ONLY) and find the Support page that lists the Drivers available for whatever model device you have, locate the Driver file for your particular Operating System, download it to desktop and then run it to install Drivers again. This may be a case of a corrupted Driver file, or it might be a case where M-Audio support has already issued an updated driver that may work differently from previous and thus be made to work as it is supposed to work, even with BB. --Mac

Hi Mac I did indeed visit the M-Audio web site. This particular midi-controller is the M-Audio Keystation Mini 32. When connected to a PC Windows automatically looks for, and installs, the drivers. On M-Audio's web site (Support/Download/Drivers) they only list drivers for Mac OS. In the meantime I received this email from PG music. I think I'll live without Midi controllers + BIAB/Realband until they can fix this bug! PG MUSIC SUPPORT REPLY: Hello, I have had other users with this problem some with soundcards and mixers with the same error and some like you with midi keyboards, its just that I don't have a tool at my disposal that would force a driver to work better than it wants to naturally work. All that can be done is to remove the Band-in-a-Box program and or the Midi driver and try re-setting it up. I understand that 2013 did not have this problem and that could be for a number of reasons, that is why I suggest a wipe of Band-in-a-Box and re-install. Thanks, Rob PG Music Inc. www.pgmusic.com

SUCCESS!!!!!! I just want to share this gem with anyone who experiences the difficulties I have had with Midi connections/BIAB/REALBAND + Windows 7 64 bit. I trawled the internet and found a forum where others had had similar problems as mine (but not with BIAB/REALBAND??). Hey I was ready to wipe my hard drive and do a fresh install so any help was welcome. The advise given involved tinkering with the registry. I'm not an IT expert but I gave this a go and BINGO.....I'm connected!! The Fix: Type "regedit" in the search bar, then go to:- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/4D36E96C-E325-11CEBFC1- 08002BE10318 Then right click - New - Multi-String Value, change name to "UpperFilters" then change data entry to "ksthunk" Finally, other folks who have had midi connection probs AFTER Windows updates, have applied the above and it fixed the issues. Perhaps save the above somewhere safe, just for that day when Windows messes with your music making fun I'm off to drink a beer & play music......Best Wishes to all!

Good Troublehoot and Repair, dallen.
My kinda user, get out there and research, research, research, then make good descisions and try things in good order until success is achieved.
Step up and receive your ATTABOY!
I've copied that to a file I keep here, but am not likely to recommend regedits wantonly, having experienced a few times in open forum where others have managed to go in there and really mess things up on their machines - and then of course come back and blame US.
If this becomes a recurring enough situation for others, perhaps its time to write a Script that would do the task in one click, dunno.
Have Fun,
--Mac

As Mac said GREAT find - but a minor correction and comment I think (and do you have original link on this ?)
The key should be:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"
Yours is missing a dash ("-") between "11CE" and "BFC1"
Also I suspect in most people's registry's there are probably a score or more of key entries under Class for teh key "{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"
Only ONE requires the "UpperFilters" set to "ksthunk"
that one is for the default name: "Sound, video and game controllers"
Again many people will probably be glad and thankful you helped "puzzle" this out for them
