Hi and a Happy New Year to All.
My desktop computer is in the shop and I'm having to use my Windows 7 laptop for programing. I'm using the touch pad for a mouse.
How do I stop programs and files from opening when the mouse passes over or hovers on a link, and not being clicked?
It's driving me crazy (crazier)

Control Panel -> Mouse (May be labeled differently, such as Touch Pad or Pointing Device, etc.) doubleclick it to open up all the options, read thru them to find where to turn the sensitivity of the touchpad higher.

As per Mac go to your mouse control in control panel. What I found was the culprit in programs starting by a hovering mouse was that I was also inadvertently touching the pad with my fingers. I changed the controls so the only the buttons worked and they had to be double clicked. That solved my problem. DennisD

I found that buying a wireless mouse solved all of my problems!
OK, a random thought;
Why does toilet paper need a commercial? Who's not buying it?

I thought I had deleted this post. Obviously not.
As far as I can see, I have the right settings. I'm using the touch pad to control the pointer.
I gave my wireless mouse away. Time to get another or a USB type.

Battery life becomes a factor in wireless mice. I've had many "battery eaters" in my time. I'm now using a Logitech WIFI mouse that employs a battery-saving feature. When idling it shuts off until moved again. The battery-saving feature is virtually transparent and, in my case, extends battery life to about a year and I use the mouse about ten hours daily.

Here's a couple more ideas that may work:
- on our HP laptop, the touchpad has a small indent in its top left corner. If you double tap that with your finger, it disables (temporarily) so you can (say) type without affecting the touchpad (double tapping again turns it back on)
- on our netbook, there's a Fn + F9 that similarly turns the touchpad on and off
