I've been using Garageband to edit MIDI but it's not very easy and you can't export. Any suggestions?

You can go all in and buy Logic it is a very rich Mac DAW for around $200. http://www.apple.com/logic-pro/

Or go with Studio one, a little less Midi tools but still pretty solid and a great value, and deep Melodyne integration. http://www.presonus.com/products/studio-one Artist is $100 only limitation is no third party Plugins, but what is comes with is really pretty good, or Producer $200 and it opens up third party plugs, then the Pro version for $400

Of Reaper for $60 solid program, midi is growing in it, still not up to the others midi wise, but far more than Garageband http://www.cockos.com/reaper/

Thanks! I've been thinking about upgrading to Logic anyway. My original plan way back when was to get Logic but then I started using Garageband which came with the computer and it seemed adequate for the level I'm at. I kind of wish I had gone straight to Logic. I'm a little worried about the learning curve.

FWIW, I would recommend Reaper over Logic.

Logic can be, well, Illogical in use IMO.

I was hoping I'd have a leg up on learning Logic since I already know Garageband. Maybe that's not the case?

Mac knows better than me on this stuff, but Logic's midi is light years ahead of Eepear, but i have found i am not light years ahead so simple is better for me most of the time, and you can't beat Reaper's price.

You can try Reaper out for free. The only restriction is a short timer at the beginning reminding you it's in demo mode.

If the workflow is good for you, use it. If not, try another DAW. Ultimately, it's about the how well the tool meshes with how you work, not the cost or feature list.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

David speaks big truth. One reason I never really got into Reaper is that it takes so much set and fooling around for me. To many options.

We all have our preferences for 'logical' workflow.
Reaper (and Traktion) seem unintuitive to me, whereas RB, PT and Roland software always seems intuitive. I can figure the others out, but I'm spending time figuring them out.

Take a look at what you have first (read free or already purchased) then decide if another DAW is even needed.
I've watched close friends go the 'newest/greatest' route and never produce a song. They spent too much time trying to figure it all out.

At the same time I've seen people get PT for $50 and produce CD's that sold. Use whatever will help you get 'er done.

Of course many great CD's are done on the 'latest/greatest' software but you need to know how to use those tools. It can be distracting to chase software when you really just need to buckle down and get the knowledge/experience of how each one works .. starting with what you already have.

Well said Rharv. I tried Reaper and feel the same.

I came up years ago through the Cool Edit Pro days. Adobe bought it and named it to Adobe Audition on newer versions. I'm happy running an older version, 1.5, on PC. Looks like newer versions are available on MAC. Just check Adobe.com.

I guess the problem I had with Reaper is that editing .wav files seemed difficult compared to how easy it is for me in Adobe.

Doh! Except you were asking for a MIDI editor...
