Hi
A couple of years back I was getting sync and latency issues when trying to record midi to PT while listening to audio but solved the issue when I went to the M-Audio card solution. (Using info from this forum) I am planning to upgrade to a new computer with the i7 processor Vista 64 bit and 6 gig of Ram. It comes with a Realtek Sound Card with 7.1 out etc. Will this new system still need the M-Audio card to avoid latency? (There are not a lot of extra slots on the system I am looking at). Thanks

Only way to be sure is to get the system and see.
It is always a good idea to get a system that has as many PCI slots in it as you can find these days if you are into making music.
At least make sure it has at least two PCI slots, full height, so that you can install that M-Audio card. Why two slots? At least two, so that you can try another slot if there is an IRQ share with the soundcard.

Take Mac's advice on slots - there is another thread somewhere I read today - someone made the same recommendation - more slots = better chance of avoiding IRQ conflicts (which can be a nightmare).
And don't get a nice compact space saving machine, get a big honking wide case. When you start adding HDD's and can't get the cables in (never mind your hands), you'll wish for a big case.
The case on my music machine is 8 3/4" wide, and having those plastic clip-in drive bays is nice too.
Every penny you save now will be spent later. Cheaping out on a DAW is not smart.
BTW, there are a number of posters popping up on various sites suggesting that the new W7 beta is better than Vista. By better I mean faster with fewer problems. Even on the photography forum I go to there is a user with Windows 7 beta running smoothly.

Thanks for the suggestions but I decided to get an M-Audio Fast Track Pro. Thought it would solve all audio issues but....
(Setup: Fast Track Pro with Vista 64 bit latest drivers and brand new Dell i7 system)
Device shows connected on control panel when plugged in
Try to choose Output 3/4 SPDIF (or any other option) Panel goes grey and says busy. Stays grey and never recovers. Get a timeout error. Can unplug FTP and re-plug. Control panel comes back but goes grey when selecting an option etc, etc..
One other strange thing, device only recognized when plugged into the USB plug where it was first detected.
Tried device on Laptop with XP and all works fine (Panel goes grey and says busy but recovers with option selected. Appreciate any help on this
