Perhaps this is a bug?

On opening a song file am_iblue.mgu I look at bar 6 in notation view and see:

The display of Bb and A looks wrong, as you can see if I switch the notation view into staff roll mode:

If I then click Play and Stop and look at bar 6 again in regular notation mode, it is shown differently:

Is there a subtle explanation for this behavior? I have seen similar curiosities in other songs.

John

John, this is a good piece of detective work. I can confirm your findings. It happens for me only if I generate, after having viewed in Staff Roll Notation Mode.

I suspect you have found an 'undesirable / unintended' operation.

Here are my findings:

Go thru the thing step by step again, but first unchecking "Clean Notation" and see what you get then.

It could also just be a corrupted songfile in which someone did an Edit in such fashion that they got what they wanted in the way of how it sounds but did not pay attention to the Notation. Many don't, many can't. Editing an existing note by way of Durations can sometimes leave the Notation in a previous state. In some instances, I've found that Deleting offending note(s) and re-entering them properly and resaving can correct such things.

OK, I'm back. That Clean check-box is a contributor. Nice call.

However, generating a song shouldn't change the Notation display IMO.

I would have thought maybe checking/unchecking 'Clean' might change the display, but after generating, checking/un-checking Clean makes no difference to the display. The Generate without Clean is what changes the Notation in this case. Strange?

What are your thoughts?

This is niot a bug in BB, this is a bad songfile. BB is only doing what was entered and saved in a wrong fashion.

Improperly entered songfile.

Free internet downloads are notorious for such things in them.

It is also possible to do it to yourself by the way in which Edits are improperly made. In Notation Edit View, for example, one can RightClick on a note, select Edit Note and uswe the Spinner to change Duration value (or they could open the PianoRoll view and drag the Duration value, same thing under the hood) and thus increase of decrease a note duration such that it now "sounds right" but what you see is exactly what can happen, until regenerated, the original notation as saved will be there first.

Again:

If you Delete those offending notes and Re-enter them properly, then Save the songfile, it should fix the problem.
