I have been playing with the settings in BIAB2014, and cannot seem to get the latency of my Digital Piano's input to an acceptable level in BIAB. I am using the ASIO4ALL driver, and it works well when I use Pianoteq (apart from BIAB). When using Pianoteq, latency isn't even noticable. In BIAB using the same ASIO driver, the latency is a fraction of a second and is quite noticable. Note that I do NOT run both BIAB and Pianoteq concurrently, since ASIO4ALL doesn't allow that.
In the BIAB MIDI/Audio Driver settings, I have output set to "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth" because that's the only setting that even produces any sound from the Digital Piano. I have played with the latency sliders in both the MIDI/Audio Drivers window and in the ASIO4ALL driver itself, but neither seems to have any effect at all. (The latency seems to be at the same level no matter where I set these).
I don't understand why, using the same ASIO4ALL driver, I get unacceptable latency with one application (BIAB) and practically no latency with another (Pianoteq). That leads me to believe that there is some setting in BIAB that I have set incorrectly.
FWIW, I'm using my generic laptop's generic sound card.
Can someone help me out with steps I can try to iron this out?
Thanks!

To the right, below the MIDI Output window, "Use DXi" must be checked, then hit the big DXi button and make sure that your Pianoteq VST or DXi is invoked.
If there is still latency, open the ASIO4ALL control panel via the Audio Settings button and try different buffer settings there.

--Mac Thanks for the reply, Mac. When I check "Use Dxi", I get no sound at all when playing the keyboard, no matter which VST is invoked. (The VST's listed are NONE, <dxi> CoyoteWT, <dxi> Sampletank 2.x, and Pianoteq 4). When I UNcheck "Use Dxi", I get sound (but with latency).

Sometimes I have to hit the Play button before I can hear notes I play on the Thru channel when using Software DXi/ VSTi MIDI synths.
In other words, just changing to one and then expecting to be able to hear it immediately doesn't work. I think it is a matter of the software somehow getting set or "focus".
Anyway, after hitting the Play button, and while that song is playing for a few bars, I then hit the keyboard and can make sure I hear the chosen synth playing, then I can hit the Stop button.
And after doing the above, I can play the keyboard and hear it via the synth for the rest of that particular bb session whether or not the song is playing.
Give that a try.

--Mac Still not working, Mac. In fact, I can't get ANY sound when hitting Play, either. (In other words I cant even hear what BIAB is playing.) When hitting Play, I get a yellow pop-up on the upper right that says that "DXI output will be silent because the ASIO4ALL driver is not connected, possibly because of using a soft synth for MIDI output such as GS Wavetable." I get this message no matter what I use for MIDI output (Wavetable or MIDI Mapper or None). And it happens no matter which VST I set the Dxi output to. I've tried re-booting Windows (which the pop-up also suggests), but still no joy. Any further thoughts? Thanks. EDIT: I'm not sure whether this sheds any light on anything, but the inputs from my Digital Piano DO show on BIAB's "Big Piano" and the latency looks like it may be pretty good. But of course there are still no sounds.

Something's wrong IMO.
At this point, I would certainly try the Return to Factory Settings command located under the Options menu.
I would choose button two, which is the one that not only resets critical internal file settings, but also re-invokes the MIDI/Audio Selection Wizard.

--Mac I did exactly as you advised above, Mac -- and it's still not working. I get no sounds at all with the ASIO driver (ASIO4ALL). (MME driver works, but with bad latency). In the ASIO Audio Drivers Window, I've selected ASIO4All v2, checked "ASIO Always On", but the Ouput Port says "(0,1) Not Connected 1 + Not Connected 2". Perhaps that's the problem? If so, I don't understand what's causing it. Note that ASIO4ALL works fine with the standalone version of Pianoteq, so I doubt that it's a driver problem. (ie - running Pianoteq outside of BIAB). Also, the full text of the yellow pop-up window that I referenced in the previous post is: "DXI output will be silent because the ASIO4ALL driver is not connected, possibly because of using a soft synth for MIDI output such as GS Wavetable or running another Audio Program like Windows Media Player". I'm not running another audio program concurrently with BIAB. Unless I have an unknown audio program loading upon system boot-up that I don't know about....Is there a way to check that? I'm stumped - but that's nothing new for me. Thanks for your help (and patience) with this!

Ed, Thank you for that info! It looks like it could be promising. I'll give it a try later today, and will report back here. Thanks!

Well, I just downloaded it, installed it, set MIDI out put to this new driver, and rebooted the system. NO CHANGE.... Still no sounds when playing a song in BIAB and no sounds when playing keyboard input. 8-( Very frustrating. I'm a bit short on time right now, but will probably reset BIAB back to factory settings again (per Mac's suggestion) later on and take it from there. In the meantime, does anyone else have any thoughts on things to try? Perhaps I should try "MIDI Yoke" as suggested my jford in that thread? Thanks!

Hi, Newbert -
I've actually switched from MIDIYoke to LoopBe since I posted (because LoopBe works with 64-bit apps; MIDIYoke doesn't).
Also, in the ASIO admin screen, make sure you switch to advanced settings which give you more control over which device to use.
For example, on my laptop, if in MME mode, I just choose the built-in soundcard driver and it will switch between speakers and headphones. However, if using an ASIO driver, I have to specify whether I'm using headphones or not (and the driver names are not even called heaphones/speakers, had to figure it out by trial and error). I had to use the advanced tab to switch appropriately in ASIO4ALL.

Thanks, John. I won't waste any time with MIDI Yoke then. I'll play with the advanced settings in the ASIO4All driver instead, but I don't recall seeing too many options there. (I'm using V2.) My set up is that my laptop is connected to a mixer, using the laptop's headphone jack. (It's one of 3 inputs into the mixer - laptop digital piano and iPad). My headphones, and studio monitors, actually come out of the mixer - so I guess that I need to find the "headphones" setting in the ASIO4All driver? If I hit a brick wall, I'll reset BIAB to factory settings again and play a bit more. If nothing works, perhaps I'll just give PGMusic a call tomorrow.... Thanks for you help. Thanks.

FINALLY SUCCESS!!!!! By playing with some of the advanced settings in the ASIO4ALL drivers, (and using the downloaded LoopBe1 MIDI driver) I finally have sound! 8-)
However, I've adjusted the latency in Audio Drivers "Soft Synth Latency Adjust" utility to arrive at an acceptable level, but I can't get it to "stick". In other words, each time I leave BIAB, then return to BIAB, I have to reset it. Is there away to make this setting "stick"?
Finally, hopefully one last question (and this might require it's own thread). I find that the sound from Pianoteq's VST plug-in from within BIAB is extremely muffled, compared to "straight" Pianoteq (ie - by itself outside of BIAB). Is there some adjustment I can make somewhere to make it sound more like I know it should?
I haven't tried the other VST's that I have available (like Sampletank) yet, but I hope that they work now, as well (with minimal latency).
Thank you ALL for the help with this!

Inside BiaB, the Latency block where you set the latency in mSecs is only for use with Windows Sound drivers.
When using ASIO drivers, that block gets automatically set by your ASIO driver control panel buffer setting.
However, the block inside BB does not change right away when you reset the buffer settings for the ASIO drivers - you have to close the MIDI/Audio window completely and then reopen it to see the reported latency figure in mS.

--Mac I don't quite follow what you're saying here, Mac. I'm aware that the "Latency Adjust" button in MIDI/Audio Drivers Window doesn't apply to ASIO. I'm referring to the Latency figure in mS that's reported in the "Audio Drivers/Soft Synth Latency Adjust Window". The default value of 4 always comes up - even after I've changed it (to 110 in my case) and exited the MIDI/Audio/Preferences windows completely. If I haven't left BIAB completely the latency stays at where I set this - even though the value shown in the window is 4. If I DO leave BIAB and then start up BIAB again, the latency is bad again, and I have to dive back into Preferences/MIDI/Audio/Synth Latency Adjust to change it back to 110 again. That's what I mean by it doesn't "stick". Thanks.

I think you must be referring to coding that is supplied by your ASIO driver and not BB. BB does have a button that will access that control panel for us, though bb has nothing else to do with it after that.

In any event, at least I got the sound working and latency issue sorted out - even though the setting won't "stick". Much better than what I had before....

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!
Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
