PT2013:
I don't know if it was running the ASIO/USB-based editor/librarian for one of my mfx units or the recent iTunes upgrade, but yesterday I started getting the Error4 message (WAV Device Already In Use, Not Found, Not Working, Conflicting IRQs, yadda-yadda-yadda)everytime I loaded a MIDI file or stopped playing it. DXi/VSTi instruments like Coyote/Forte/VSC (and I'll assume the other that I have) stopped sounding. WAV files in sequences no longer played (even in the "Latency Adjust" file). Control panel indicated all devices working properly. Windows MediaPlayer had no problem playing a WAV file. My driver soundcard drivers (and others) are up to date.

Only PT---BIAB and RB were fine. My other DAWS (Sonar, ProTools, MixCraft, ProTracks, SoundForge & Reaper) were also fine (except for Studio One [nice plugins] which never works properly and Tracktion3/4/5 [interesting loop workflow] which couldn't properly play a MIDI file to save itself).

I checked the PT Support FAQ and saw that I have/had company.

During an attempt to change an ASIO option in PT, the program froze and I had to shut it down through Task Manager. The next time I started PT2013 up, it acknowledged the non-normal shutdown and asked if I wanted to restore the defaults. I said yes, restore the defaults and---problem solved. Everything is working again.

The only issue is resetting all of your preferences. I didn't want to save/rename the PT INI files because I wasn't sure that the setting that was causing me problems wasn't being stored in one of them.

So, at long last, my question: Does anyone know which INI files store which settings?

Try looking at INI files in notepad.
PTW.INI has a lot in it.

Always back it up before writing over ..

I did inspect the files---button, bar, button, bar . . . without a Developers'Tool Kit, an exercise in departing far from enjoying music.

I guess the short version of my question is: which INI file do I rename to get PT to reset to the developer defaults?

BTW, rharv, if you don't mind me asking, what model strat is that in your avatar photo?

Now that I understand the question ..

Rename PTW.INI and PTPA.CFG

As far as the guitar; that one is a Mexican Strat round '95 or so. I have a nice blue one and a white one too, but I like that one. It seems to be out on the stand more often. smile

Thanks. Knowing that is better than forcing a TaskManager shutdown.

. . . And, of course, I just remembered the "Window Setup" save/restore feature in the File Menu . . .

Is that the "Power Strat" (Controls: Volume-Tone-MidBoost)?

Glad the file names helped
That Strat in my avatar is nothing special, just handy and predictable.
Not a 'Power Strat'. Normal configuration/wiring.

Whenever asked, I tell 'em my Mex Strat is the "Refrigerator Magnet Six-to-Nine Piece Basswood Mexican Poplar Model"...

It's handy
It plays reliably
I don't have to worry about the kids knocking it over or one of the daughter's boyfriend's dropping it

Serviceable
Don't judge me smile

I actually started writing a song about that guitar and my old bass .. they are very familiar and they feel 'right' when I grab them. Even if they ain't the 'best' in the house.
Unfortunately some critics ripped apart the main 'theme' lyric line in the song .. still gotta come back to that one. I liked the concept.

The only reason they ask is the sound achieved from the thing.

That old Law of Diminishing Return aspect.
