I'm hoping since ST2.5 is bundled with BIAB2013 that someone here can help me. I'm ultimately looking for a harp loop that has a long gliss riff. I tried finding one in BOTH ST2, and Philharmonik. I know I've used my Philharmonik before, but for some reason it wouldn't load any of it's samples. Can anyone tell me if either of these 2 pkgs offer such a loop animal?

Tnx,
KC

I use SampleTank (ST) but not exclusively or majorly, and I never really use any harp's (from any of my softsynths or HW synths) per se, but I'll look. In the meantime:

Two FYI's (and don’t be insulted if you already know this it's just information)

1. ST can play Miroslav's Phil. (MP) sounds (just point to that library folder in ST and update the path) so you don't really need to call up MP - unless you want to edit the instrument - then MP has a better interface IMO. And your problem with Miro might just be the path to the MP library needs refreshed/updated??

2. And just in case you are unsure - the free ST that t comes with BIAB, or that can be downloaded from IK's Multimedia's site - independent of PG music, contains just a "tease" amount of sounds/instruments - it is not even close to covering much of any kind of score/orchestration/ or song. The additional HQ sounds that PG supplies is giving you a core of sounds for basic jazz/rock/country and a few other areas above and beyond, and that sound good, the freebies that come with the free SampleTank.

Finally - if you HAVE some good harp SAMPLES in wav, AIFF, or Akai S1000/S3000, you can import to ST and work with them there even the free ST allows this sine there is only ONE ST engine (unlike Kontact's freebie) the only difference between ST free, ST L and ST XL is more and larger instrument library's.

Good luck (now let me look for Harp sounds)

Larry

update

I guess Harps are not a big IK "hit parade" sound

In Miro. Phil. just your one basic harp, while it has a Maj and Min arpeggio it has NO Harp LOOPS in either MP or the free ST sound.

As a matter of fact, the FULL ST 2XL sound set only adds a different sounding HARP more "new age" for lack of something to call it (brighter and more "ambiance"). Additionaly, I can't find any harps in any of the other ST Expansion paks and I have them all. Also can't find any harps in Kontakt 5's (full version) incldued lib's, maybe as an add-on? I don't have any addtional NI add-ons for Kontakt so I wouldn't know.

If I you want a full (discrete) glissando and/or "looped" harp of some kind you'll have to play it or "key it" in (aka piano roll or other editing means) as a MIDI sequence and save it or find a harp sound, a harp "run" (gliss), or a harp loop on web somewhere.

Again good luck

Garritan Personal Orchestra supposedly has several harp sounds

This is the link to the web site

Have no idea about the compatibility though, but you may be able to create samples to re-use.

Obviously the kind of stuff I write is not exactly "harp" kinda stuff, unless you want to call the harmonica a harp.

But , to the point of the question. If there is a harp in a given synth, it would follow that you could simply load that sample and do a keyboard gliss and that should work just fine. Record it, capture it as a sample, whatever you wish.

That would be my approach should I find myself in desperate need of a harp gliss.

There are loops available:

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=harp%20glissando%20sound%20effect&sm=1

However:

A harp gliss is one of the easiest things to create using a MIDI keyboard and a fair to good Harp, Nylon String Guitar, or some other suitable Patch sound.

Anybody with two working hands can play this one - even if the only other thing they can play might be chopsticks.

It is an easy effect.

The "Classic" harp gliss is done by using only the black keys on the keyboard, inverting the hands upside-down and raking the two hands up or down the black keys, one behind the other, while holding the Sustain Pedal down. Once created, this can be Transposed to any of the 12 keys as necessary to fit the target piece easily, using MIDI commands, either as a key transposition, or in some cases, by using the PianoRoll view in your DAW to select all notes and drag them to a different key all at once.

Raking the black keys yields and automatic Pentatonic Scale harp gliss and is the most common one for this effect. Raking the white keys is used less often, for that creates a Diatonic (Major) scale sound and the held Sustain Pedal makes it sound like too many enharmonic notes at once. But as with all things, there are times and places for it, for example, the typical "dream" sequence sound that might be needed for an underscore or other dramatic musical effect can contain BOTH the black key rake along with some White Key rakes, which can serve to extend the amount of time the repeated effect takes place without things becoming too trite sounding or repetitive.

I have found through using many different types of MIDI synths and samples that it is often the case where any Patch that is labeled as "harp" doesn't sound as good or as realistic at the Gliss thing as some of the OTHER patches in the synth or soundbank, which may be labeled as just about any instrument OTHER than harp, but work to to the better once the Gliss is recorded as MIDI and Reverb is added to it, so experiment with changing patches and listening within the context of the particular project. Sometimes "Dulcimer" patches can sound good, or Nylon Guitar, etc. Depends on lots of issues, changes from synth to synth, sample to sample.

The Black Key/White Key Keyboard Rake is EASY, takes a minimum of "practice" at it to sound like a pro.

Larry in Kontakt 4 there is a harp in the Factory LibraryOrchestra/VSL Strings library. Did you look there in Kontakt 5? I would be very surprised if they took the harp out.

If you Google/bing harp for Kontakt 5 you will find a number of them. If you google/bing harp VSTi you will find a number of other harps.

Good luck.

Ps – if your DAW has an arpeggio function don’t over look that as it can be used to generate a harp like effect on an EP or Rhodes.

Yep, I spaced out and didn't see the "bogie" in Kontakt 5 list (exactly where you said it would be), sounds pretty good too, but I'm no harp expert. Besides, like I said above I have not found, and do not do, anything that requires any kind of harp (other than blues "harp" aka harmonica) so … as sampled instruments go they are pretty low on my give a %^&* scale (yet anyway).

Maybe on my first 180 gram vinyl release (which I know is certain to go platinum <G>)

Good luck to OP (and like I alluded to, and Mac explained in detail, easy enough to do yourself)

Hi

Some newbie questions. Also, I don't have everything in front of me so going from memory on versions and products. I've got an old version of SampleTank that I purchased. 1.? It has the OmniSynth samples etc on it. Can I use those sounds in the SampleTank 2 that comes with BIAB?

I also tried to load in some free SampleTank sounds that I had (Hi Quality piano which I really liked) into the SampleTank 2. It doesn't seem to recognise them as Sounds. Is there a trick to this? I assume that would also be a problem with the OmniSynth sounds?

Finally, my SampleTank loads in BIAB but gives me a message that it is not registered and then works fine. I thought I had registered it previously but the updated registration software won't accept my BIAB codes now.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
