Josie C and myself are working on this Kate Wolf gem, "China Or A Woman's Heart" and Josie has asked me to add Dobro and harmonica breaks and fills.

http://youtu.be/14siRMH-9Uo

I feel grossly inadequate in BIAB when compared to her mastery of the software but, I want to support her in any/every way possible, she's that good to me.

Consequently, I'm seeking help from my BB friends. I've heard Tommy A blow a fabulous harp (harmonica) but I've never heard anyone play Dobro.

Please help me to help our own Josie C.

Side point: I had wondered how Kate would reconcile "China" with "A Woman's Heart" and she did it so beautifully. She has become my favorite songwriter/lyricist. The music world lost another jewel in it's crown when Kate died.

It is all a matter of timing. I was working remotely with my buddy who was recording a harp player this morning in his studio. Would have been glad to slip this in for him to add some licks and fills. I will call tonight to see if he is coming back soon. If I can get him, do you want him to blow over this mp3 and save a solo track? or do you have a BIAB arrangement? Or has Tommy stepped up to the mic?

Dan,

I don't think Tommy has seen this topic yet.

Here's Josie's message to me this morning:

Quote:
What usually works for me is to do a basic recording with just bass drums and maybe one guitar and then put the fills in after using something like real band. So if you send me a basic biab file I will do a basic recording and then we will see from there.

I ran the song through ACW but it didn't seem to work correctly. I verified the key (C) but wouldn't ID the changes. Perhaps you'll have more success with the chord progression.

I really appreciate your input, Dan.

Thank you.

Don, I recently created a backing track in BIAB for a client doing Mark Knopfler's "All That Matters." I have only fooled around with Real Tracks before, but I quickly got fabulous results by trading my guitar licks with some Real Dobro.

I might have done better had I had the time to take it into RealBand and do a little more regeneration, but we both were very happy with the finished product. Might this work in your case?

You probably know this yourself, but really I'm stoked on PG Music right now!

R.

Don, gimmie a few minutes, I'd be happy to listen and type the chor ds for you.

I use the good old fashioned mACW here...

That rather hollow space between my ears.

I HAVE gone digital, though, today I use a keyboard instead o' the pencil!

Song you posted is in Bb.

I've got a skeleton on paper, but would you prefer a layout in Bsnd in a Box and a download link?

Wouldn't take long, its a 1-4-5 ditty with one 2-5 in it.

Sounds like Bb to me. I suspect it would be played nicely with a capo at 3 - now where is that capo of mine??

@Richard, running the mp3 through ACW yielded a mess. Not only didn't it ID the changes but it altered the tempo.

@Macster, whatever you can do to help Josie and me would be just awesome. Thanks, amico.

You wonderful friends have me sobbing "happy tears".

A deadline was not discussed.

Josie is experiencing severe connection woes (as is most of SA) related to major power grid changes so there is no real urgency.

She plans an impromptu show on SJ tomorrow in an effort to pull one tired old Irishman out of the doldrums. She's such a precious lady and friend.

Here is the lyrics and the arrangement from the mp3

In China Or A Woman’s Heart
(There Are Places No One Knows)
Words and Music by Kate Wolf

Intro
Just a little box all covered with blossoms white as snow
Chinese red and made of brass that he gave her long ago

(Band enters)
Like the red dirt Oklahoma hills and the springtime flowering trees
That she kept with all the love they shared inside her memories

Verse 1
She got it from her captain when he sailed around the horn
Bringing gifts from China to their Oklahoma home
There were fancy silks and carved wood chests from the places he had gone
She kept them all until she died but this was her favorite one

Chorus
Just a little box all covered with blossoms white as snow
Chinese red and made of brass that he gave her long ago
Like the red dirt Oklahoma hills and the springtime flowering trees
That she kept with all the love they shared inside her memories

Solo Break

Verse 2
She kept it on her dresser filled with gold and silver rings
Necklaces of turquoise beads and other things
It filled her heart with the mystery and the magic of the day
When he gave it to her for her own in his quiet loving way
Ten years they spent together he’d come home and then he’d leave
And one day while she waited he disappeared at sea
No one knew how she’d call his name to the silent rocks and stones
Or how she’d sit and hold that little box so she would not feel alone

Insert Chorus

Solo break

Verse 3
She never was a dancer or wrote a fancy line
The treasures of her life were the things she left behind
They buried her without them where the prairie grasses grow
In China or a woman’s heart there are places no one knows

Insert Chorus

Ending
They buried her without them where the prairie grasses grow
In China or a woman’s heart there are places no one knows

Folks, I'm imagining harmonica "chuffs" throughout then either a harmonica or dobro instrumental break.

Thanks so much.

Macster, Josie would like a BIAB file so she can jump right in. I asked if the key was comfortable for her and she said yes, she sings all of Kate's songs in Kate's original key.

(Note: Apparently, ACW was totally wrong. It reported the key of "C". It's normally very accurate).

In my humble opinion, leukemia robbed the Music World of another fabulous songwriter and lyricist long before her time.

Tell her to feel free to freely change anything at will.

Its just a flat roughout from beginning to end of the youtube performance you posted, "one long song" format, with rested instruments except bass for the intro so there will be something to follow if she chooses to sing that a capella Intro.

Good one Mac.

Don, BIAB has Harmonica RTs which can be dropped in to taste at any time. However, if you feel you want to go with a live recorded track for Harmonica my offer to contact a guy who knows a guy is still open.

I don't see any Dobro RTs?

Finally, let Jose know this will play nice on her guitar with a capo on 3 and the I, IV, V played as a G, C, D form. But she will likely know that.

One of the simple Resonator Guitar (Dobro is a brand name) background soloists is indeed in the songfile I posted.

Tip 'n Trick

I entered the chords to this rather easy tune in almost the first pass by playing the tune back via youtube in realtime.

My trick is to first set BB's Chord Sheet to "Nashville Notation" and place the cursor on bar 1, then start the song playback rolling.

Since this song is a rather simple 1-4-5 chord progression with the occasional Major 2, I just type in the numbers and hit Enter while listening to the song go by.

Fast way to do it, works even with more complicated changes if you first ignore any chord extensions and etc. -- just listen and type the numbers that correspond to the chord roots.

Then I reset BB to display the normal Chord Names, and make a second pass, this time listening for any extensions and typing those in where appropriate.

If you find the key of the song first, and can hear the intervals the all important bottom bass line is playing, in a simple song such as this one, this method can be faster than using the ACW IMO.

Especially when using the NUMPAD for fast entry.

Nashville Notation.

It isn't just for Country Music session players...
