That's kind of what I figured, had to be either an XP or Vista machine, might be time to start thinking on that upgrade.
If its any consolation, I've got the same to go through here with a couple of great old "friends" - but the performance, appearance and screen on the Win7 machine shows the difference to me in no uncertain terms.

Resolution 1280X1024 on this computer, windows Vista. Ed If that is the maximum resolution the monitor can do you can get a wide screen monitor that will give you more resolution like 1440, 1600 or 1920 and you can also use an LCD/LED TV.

I have the same problem here after the introduction of RB 2014 and the new GUI. PG support acknowledged the issue in December and said they'd pass it on to the development team, but so far no fix.

Can this been done witha new wide screen moitor without buying a new computer? Ed Sure. --Mac Bear in mind that you will not be able to exceed the maximum resolution that your computer graphics card can produce. If the graphics maxes out at 1280 x 1024, then the addition of a wide screen monitor won't increase the number of pixels possible. Also, most LCD monitors have 'native resolution' that they perform best at - clarity wise. When you set the graphics adapter to a different resolution, things can start to look 'not so good'. Trevor mentions some caveats that are well worth noting.
As with the purchase of ANY computer peripheral, it is imoortant for the consumer to do the required homework investigating the technical side of the issue, or perhaps enlist the aid of someone who is very tech savvy before plunking down the plastic.

The new GUI is fine, if you're working on a large screen monitor 22" or larger. But when it's installed on a laptop, and you're using it for live performance that GUI takes up at least 1/3 of the screen real estate. This is a 17" "Entertainment" model notebook that I got specifically for the larger screen.
(Laptop: HP Pavilion DV7-1285DX ; OS: Win7/Pro ; Res: 1440 x 900 (highest); Color: 32-bit)
It would be nice to have some way to either shrink that GUI, or turn parts of it off for "performance mode" and reclaim some of the screen.
Just sayin'....

I don't think it's '22" or larger' monitor that matters, but rather the resolution of the video settings.
In my experience it is 1440 width resolution in your specs that is the breaking point ..
I think a higher resolution setting on a 19" screen would show everything (though smaller)
