I have a Yamaha MIDI keyboard, I know it must be possible to use the MIDI engine from it instead of the one in BIAB but I can't figure out how. Will it work if I just select it as the playback device and then render my MIDI files to wave

Zan,
You should be able to select it as your midi output device and have midi play though it, but don't render to wave - in which case your file becomes audio data, and won't play via any midi output device.

Zan,
Does you keyboard have a USB port for connection to your computer? Otherwise you will need a USB to MIDI connector. Available at music stores. PG music sells some also. Be aware that M-Audio UNO seems not to be compatible with some Yamaha keyboards.
If you use a USB-USB connection, BIAB will probably see your keyboard by name. But if USB-MIDI, BIAB will see your connector, something like "USB device" or, in my case, "Cakewalk Music Connector" or "Roland UM-1."
Please forgive me if you already knew all this. It wasn't clear from your post whether you are already using your keyboard for input.
Susan

To "render" a song played by a hardware MIDI synth such as your keyboard contains, you must connect the Line Output of the keyboard's Audio L and R output to the Line Input on your soundcard and record the MIDI playback performance to Audio stereo wav track from beginning to end. There can be no automatic Render since the engine generating the sound is outside of the PC.
Of course, you must already have the MIDI In and MIDI Out of the keyboard hooked up to the computer properly -- and have the right MIDI input and output ports selected from inside the host program (in BIAB, use the Opts -> MIDI/Audio window to highlight them and hit Okay. Then play back an all MIDI song and ascertain that you can hear your keyboard's synth being used.

I guess I was a little vague, I want to use the sound bank from my keyboard instead of the GM in BIAB. I think a lot of the Yamaha instruments sound better so what I want to do is when I render to wave, is have the Yamaha sounds when finished...does that make sense??

That's exactly how I have done it from the beginning. I create the song in b-i-b or powertracks pro and save as a midi file. Load the midi file into the Yamaha (It has a disk drive) and play the tune recording it into a wave file for the disk. So far the Yamaha produces a better sound than any of the soft synths I have played with on the computer.

Re-read my post up above if things are still unclear.

Thanks Mac, for some reason your reply didn't show up until after I had posted my response
