I have an E-machine T4852, 2gb of RAM, 1- 120gb HD (computer process), 1- 160gb HD (music software), 1- 320gb HD (for storage), using PTPA 12 (10). Can anyone help me with the most efficient configuration for music production. I don't have internet connection on at the same time I recording. Thanks.

And also, what OS and what music softwares are you using, what soundcard are you running?

Sorry, Windows Pro, M-Audio 1010, RealBand, BIAB, PTPA 12, Real Guitar, B4, Antaries Auto Tune, mostly VST's. I hear you guy talk about how great your programs are running when I look at the process running in the background sometime I had as many as 63 and my Computer usage meter is off the chart. I know my computer should be running better than this. I defrag all drives twice a week. I use a varity of midi/audio tracks with mostly PG effects at the most 16-20 tracks. I have tried the XP Tweeks. Last Sat. I was recording three vocal with 13 pre-recorded tracks and had all kind of problems. I end up having to do 1 vocal track at the time. I know it's just some little something I've got set-up wrong. Help?

"Windows Pro" could be XP Pro or Vista...

IF using ASIO drivers, set Background Services to Priority in either case. Google to see how to do that for your particular OS.

Also, the C: drive that ships with many Emachines may be a 7200rpm drive, BUT many were shipped with only a 2mb cache, kiss of death for audio streaming.

You can remedy that with an aftermarket drive that is minimum 7200 w/8mb cache or better, you can leave the programs and OS on the original drive, just point the host recording programs to use the second drive, first partition for the Temp Audio streaming.

If you can, partiton the second drive, leave one partition of about 20 gig empty (except a folder called tempaudio or whatever you want to name it).
Don't put anything on this empty partition, but like Mac said- point the temp audio stream to the second drive. In PT and RB this setting is in the audio preferences dialogue.
The idea is to have a seperate drive writing the incoming recording and another reading the existing tracks and programs, etc.

Another thing- to me 63 processes seems like an awful lot, so the system is loaded up pretty heavy. How much RAM is available for use? Even if it's a fair amount all those extra processes are eating CPU cycles. I run 24 processes at bootup on my XP recording system..I'm pretty sure you have quite a few unneccesary things running, even if it is Vista (which loads more processes than XP)
If the computer is off the internet (physically disconnected would be best) you could shut down the antivirus while recording for one suggestion. Some antivirus programs seem to become pretty active at the worst times. I don't load antivirus on the music system as it is never online.

I think it's to many too. I have done the XP Tweak thing thinking that would help. I don't know what to cut off. What I would really like to have is one configuration just for music production and one for regular. Is that possible with out two separate OS? If someone would help me with this I would appreciate it. You can PM me if you would rather. Thanks.

There are very few tweaks needed for XP.

Some of the tweaks I've seen out there on the web are ridiculous and might even make for more problems rather than solve them. If it involves a registry hack or the like and you haven't even experienced a problem yet, my advise is simple enough, "Don't do it!"

It is not like the days of Win95/98, when we even had to defeat the taskbar clock (!) in order to enjoy uninterrupted audio streaming. Or resort to overclocking the chip just to be able to run a few plugins...

Someone will soon come along and disagree with me, so I'll let the experts explain it in the following Sound on Sound article:

XP Tweaks For Music - Audio Tweaks That Work - And The Ones That Don't!

http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/oct06/articles/pcmusician_1006.htm

After reading and grokking in fullness, do only the tweaks they recommend.

After that, get your feet wet and start using your music programs.

If you have problems the gang here is around to help out.

But do not anticipate "bridges" to cross that may never ever pop up in front of you.
