I have just starting experiencing a frustrating problem on all my M$ operating systems. I am currently using legal copies of Windows Vista Home, and two copies of windows 7 pro.
All my current folders and any new folders default to read only. I have gone into properties to change the attributes but it still bounces back to read only. This makes using files extremely frustrating. I see on the net that this is not a brand new problem for M$ users but somehow I escaped it until now. I have tried a few suggestions with no success. Has anyone experienced this, any recommendations for a nominal cost software fix. I've got four computers with this problem. Thanks, Dennis

Simultaneity suggests an outside force. First thing I'd do would be full virus and malware scans. Have you done that?

Good point, follow Rysard's recommendation.
Then, if that doesn't bring joy, try using a command prompt to force Windows to change file attributes. Here's a way to do that in Win 7. I don't have Win 8, so unsure if it works for that OS.
1. Open the Start menu, type in "CMD" in the search window with no quotes
2. Once the DOS window opens, type in "attrib -r +s C:\Users\YourUserName\MyDocuments” using no quotes and where YourUserName is the name of your windows user account and My Documents is the folder where you want to remove the attribute.
3. hit Enter and that should remove the attribute from all files in the folder.

Umm, small point - that attrib command should be -r /s, the +s ADDS a system attribute to the file which effectively hides it unless you have show all files turned on... The /s says to recursively perform the change on all subdirectories.
