Here's a new one I recorded today. Actually it's an oldie - Robert Johnson tune from the 30's. The guitar was a National Steel M2 and it was pretty hot so the vocal was pushed up a bit with eg. Not so much pushed up as other areas pulled down. This was Robert Johnsons one hit song while he was alive. Anyway hope you like it and I'd love to hear your comments.

"Terraplane"

Hudson-Essex-Terraplane, the Terraplane was an automobile. Ahead of its time and considered fast in its day.

I can feel the backbeat in the guitar, would like to be able to feel that in your vocal rendition as well. Perhaps practice with that backbeat on the click with your singing now, too.

Other'n that, you gettin' better'n better at this thang.

nice one, pete! the vox seems to fade in a few spots like you were turning your head. otherwise, bravo from a fellow dobro lover.

Yeah, I got hip to the misspelling shortly after I posted this. I think I put that e in there because I was born in and raised near Terre Haute, IN. And yes, I agree the guitar is more accomplished than the vocal. Heck, I'm still trying to remember the words before I get so old that I start forgetting them. That's a good idea on just doing the singing alone. Rory Block also mentions doing that and learning the melody separately from the guitar part. It's taken quite a while to just get the guitar part and comfortable enough that I can yammer along with it. Stefan Grossman says when you can play the guitar part while you're carrying on a conversation with someone then you're there. Such things have never come easy and you must be patient with yourself and enjoy the steps along the way. Be humble but not shy.

There were a few Hudsons around when I was a kid, but the Terraplane was long gone. I think I read where they would get up to 80 MPH, but the song says 100. I think I remember the one I saw had some kind of suspension lifting apparatus? Anyway thanks Mac, gettin' better and learning more songs. Goals!

I'm blessed watching God do what He does best. I've had a few rough years, and I'm still not back to where I want to be, but I'm on the way and things are looking far better now than what they were!

Hi Don, - Thanks, no doubt doing some head turning and other body gyrations during the recording. I feel like the National Steel is a wild beast I'm trying to tame. It's one loud mama and presents damping difficulties on the bass strings for me. But love the tone and sustain. Just saw a film of Bob Brosman playing a 12 string baritone resonator on their web site. nationalsteel.com - I believe.

Thank you PeteG!

Very sweet and powerful resonator playing. I have 3 resonators, on is a duolian, and I have a 'dobro' also, although it's not a National or "Dobro" brand. I always have difficulty trying to EQ these guitars properly, as there are a lot of harmonics in play. I have adjusted the cones, spiders, etc. and installed a buffer under the tailpiece where the strings attach to avoid any rattles, but I never seem to be completely happy with the tone. If I get a good midrange, I lose some high end, and if get the high end sounding good I seem to squash the mids a bit. It's like a balancing act where I tend to lose my balance. But I really love that sound, so I will keep working at it. Again, yours sounded great.

This song, of course, has nothing to do with a Teraplane automobile. ;-)

1st car? My guess is he's still driving it. You see Mac impresses me as one of those "if it still works man I'm still gonna use it" type of guys. Near and dear to my own heart I might add.

Later,

Hi Axegrinder01,

Thanks for listening. I know there are parts available at nationalsteel.com and for other brands you might just google to see what info is available. No doubt these guitars present problems not found with a regular guitar. There are some who work on these, but don't know if that's in your budget. Anyway best of luck and post up some tunes if you'd like.

Hi Ed,

Just having some fun, wanted to record the steel and learned a bunch by doing. Ego gratifying and humbling at the same time.
