Caveat: I admit to knowing almost nothing about Midi.
But I thought it was programming code that includes, among other things, instructions for each instrument.

If I import a Midi song within BiaB, is there a way to mute one of the instruments when I play (or export) the song?
It would be very helpful for my students if I can 'take out' the bass part of a song.
I've tried what I'd think are the easy 'obvious' solutions but it hasn't worked.

Possible? Is this a real easy task that I'm going to be very embarrassed about when it's revealed?

Thanks.

If you mute the bass track prior to rendering it to midi, that should do it.

Sorry, I wasn't clear.

I didn't generate the Midi.
I wouldn't know how if my life depended on it.

I'm grabbing Midi songs off the Internet to use as teaching tools.

Hit the big green SEQ button after importing the MIDI file and take a look at the window that opens.

I import Midi all the time, and usually in my notation program. Then I strip out the parts I don't like or want, and import it to band in a box after saving it as a midi file.

With some practice works great.

That's a great idea, John. I've done that in Sibelius. We are lucky that there are so many generous folks out there who make their midi files available to us. THANKS TO Y'ALL!!

Mac, using the SEQ Button as you suggest, can you adjust volumes of various tracks individually ?

Thanks Martin I checked it out and as a result I learned a little about the "event #" tab

However, I am not clear on how to change the volume of a specific track for the whole song. Do you have to change it bar by bar or note by note....or as I am sure there is a way to change the volume ( to a different level) by track for the whole song.

Can you help clarify this for me?

The SEQ button brings you right to the sequencer feature, which usually deals with multichannel midi data on the Melody or Soloist track. Here the magic word is channel, not track. With multichannel data the accompanying tracks of BiaB are usually muted, such that they don’t interfere with multichannel midi data. Via the # button you may easily enter control changes to selected channels, and thus bring dynamics or volume changes to your multichannel midi rendition.

From a workflow perspective it appears much more comfortable to enter those control changes via the PianoRoll window. The lower part of this window supports easy and comfortable graphical editing means. Once you’ve drawn some, say, velocity or expression lines there you may check on the effects via the # button in the standard Notation window. It would be quite a tedious task to enter graphically entered controls by hand via the Event List Editor.

Changing the volumes of standard BiaB tracks, such as bass or piano etc., is a whole different story and would be achieved via the bar settings dialog (F5).
