Hi Everyone,
I understand that standard midi files are loaded into the Melody track, so in theory I should be able to adjust the overall volume of these files by adjusting the volume of the Melody track. However, when I do this there is no effect on the overall volume. Can anyone think of a reason why I would not be able to adjust the volume in this manner? Should I save the file as a standard BIAB file and then try adjusting the volume that way? Would that work?
Thanks!

BIAB is not a full-featured MIDI sequencing program, it just has the ability to load and play back MIDi files on the Melody track. The better choice for altering the MIDI file parameters would be Powertracks or Realband.
That said, if you locate the big round green SEQ button in the toolbars and hit it, you should get the MIDI on Melody track window selection and from there should be able to see each MIDI channel in the chosen MIDI sequence. While we don't have a CC7 Volume command in there, we do have a "Change Velocity" selection which you may be able to use to alter the apparent Volume level of each channel in the file, might work for you depending on the situation.

Don't start trying to Biab as a midi file player, you'll confuse and frustrate yourself. Been there, done that. The problem is so many files you find and download from the internet are not "standard" at all. You need to play midi files in a dedicated sequencer like Real Band, Sonar, Reaper, whatever. You may have say 10 files that are in fact SMF's in that they are GM files, they don't have strange program changes or other CC's in them and they play fine on your system. Then you find a song you've been looking for, load it up and the sounds are all over the place. That one was created using a non-GM synth, maybe there's a bunch of sysex info in it to control a particular piece of hardware like a Korg or Roland and it doesn't match what you're using. There are ways to modify that file so it does play on your system but again, you have to use a full sequencer for that, not Biab. The key here is most of the time problems are caused by commands that are imbedded in the midi itself, not on your system.

Once you have edited a MIDI file to your liking in Powertracks or Realband, you can save it as a standard MIDI file of your own and then open that in BIAB for playback if you want to use BIAB as your playback/performance/practice software.

Thank you everyone!
A question, if you don't mind. What is the difference between RealBand and another sequencer, such as Sonar, for example?

Realband is designed by the makers of Band in a Box and also has the Band in a Box Autoaccompaniment "engine" built into it.
You can simply type the chords into the bars, select a style and instantly generate a studio band to back up your tracks that you record.

Dear Mac,
If saved a BIAB file as a midi, wav or mp3 file and loaded that into Sonar, though, wouldn't that achieve the same result? Does the advantage lie in saving the extra step of opening Sonar or the sequencer?
Thanks!

There are several "advantages" to having RealBand.
But it is certainly not an absolute.
Your call.
