I'm running Windows Vista (I know, enough said) and I keep getting errors like the following: Invalid pointer operation at 008F7D18 AND Access violation at address 008F746E in module “bbw.exe. Read of address 03E11000 at 008F746E. This happens right at the end of the generating of the RealTracks. At the same time, it happens that I THEN have no choice but to save the file as .MGU. After some experimentation, it seems that the program is trying to generate a solo track without my asking it to---indicated by the fact that I have no other choice but to save the file as .MGU. At any rate, after these error messages happen I have to totally trash the file, as it will never generate nor play. Any suggestions?

I don't know what is causing this problem, but here are a few thoughts.

I use Vista and have no problem with it, except the annoying but harmless Access Violation message after closing BIAB.

Are you using Vista 32 or 64? Are you running with administrator rights?

Have you tried to restore BIAB to its defaults? First, do Opts, Save Preferences. Then do Opts., Return to Factory Settings. Exit BIAB and restart.

If this doesn't help, can you post the offending file and we can try it? Also, tell us which Real Tracks you are using. Does the problem only happen with this one file?

Do you have any trouble with any other program on your computer? If so, you might be experiencing a problem with your RAM. Other things to check are to make sure you have no spyware or viruses on your computer, and no unnecessary processes running in the background.

In other words, you hit PLAY and the track countdown in percentage happens up top in the blue bar, but instead of the song playing it ends iwth those error messages?

*Try a Return to Factory Settings under the Opt menu, choose the 2nd button choice.

.MGU indicates a songfile that has notes on the Melody track. A song with a Melody. .SGU means a song with nothing on the Melody track. To my knowledge it has nothing to do with the Solo track.

If this doesn't help, can you post the offending file and we can try it? Also, tell us which Real Tracks you are using. Does the problem only happen with this one file? IT HAPPENS MOST OFTEN WITH THE BLUEGRASS REALTRACKS, AND IT HAPPENS WITH ANY FILE.

Do you have any trouble with any other program on your computer? If so, you might be experiencing a problem with your RAM. Other things to check are to make sure you have no spyware or viruses on your computer, and no unnecessary processes running in the background. NO PROBLEMS WITH OTHER PROGRAMS, HOWEVER, I KNOW THERE ARE PROBABLY SOME UNNECESSARY PROCESSES RUNNING, THOUGH I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE, OR WHAT I COULD ELIMINATE. I HAVE COMPLETELY UNINSTALLED AND REINSTALLED BIAB, CLEANED THE REGISTRY AND DEFRAGGED AND RAN CHECK DISK.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP, LET'S SEE IF ANYONE ELSE ADDS A COMMENT.

Your question was, "In other words, you hit PLAY and the track countdown in percentage happens up top in the blue bar, but instead of the song playing it ends iwth those error messages?" Yes, that is correct.

And I did a "Return to Factory Settings" under the Opt menu, choose the 2nd button choice.

You are right when you said, ".MGU indicates a songfile that has notes on the Melody track. A song with a Melody. .SGU means a song with nothing on the Melody track. To my knowledge it has nothing to do with the Solo track." I mistakenly said "solo" instead of "melody". But as I indicated, I have not put any notes on the melody track.

Thanks for your suggestions,
JL

Given your answers, I don't really think that other programs or services running are the problem. However, you can check what is running by bringing up the Task Manager. In Vista, press Ctrl+Alt+Del and choose task manager at the bottom.

Your problem: Does it work like Mac said?

You said "most often" with bluegrass styles. Does this song work with another style (no matter how stupid it might sound during testing) but fail with bluegrass styles?

I have a lap top running Vista, and had the same problems from day one. I finally TURNED OFF ALL ADMINISTRATIVE/USER PASSWORDS etc. and it all went away. I think Andrew suggested that. Try that and see. There are some Vista users here that have gotten the "bugs" out to get you up and running that will help if you still have issues.

Hi Janice

I second what Gene has suggested and turn off the User Account Control (UAC) and also on some computers the Gadget SideBar needs to be turned off as that can cause glitchs

A DiscClean and Defrag is very important with Vista, as are compatible drivers (or run in XP compatibility mode) and a registry cleaner like "RegCure"

Many Vista errors can also be corrected by a complete shutdown - wait 20 seconds and start up again

Not stupid at all. It doesn't work with ANY style after I get the error, the file is utterly trash at that point. However, for further testing I am going to pick a different style, re-type in the chords from total scratch and see what happens then. Thanks again for hanging in here.

Well, I don't use any administrative passwords, and I have also done everything Jazzman said except for turning off the sidebar. Thanks so much for your suggestions.

I've done everything you said, plus some----EXCEPT for the sidebar. I really appreciate your taking time to try and help. Going off the 'tweak" some more.

I'm sending you a PM with my email address, if you would like to send me the offending file to try on my system.

About Jazzman's suggestions (which I always listen to very carefully), I run BIAB on two PCs running Vista 32, and one has the sidebar with gadgets and one does not. It doesn't seem to make a difference. Although it is one more drain on system resources, that would more likely result in glitches than in a total failure of one file.

Are you running BIAB version 2009, latest build #282 (Help, About)?

One thing you could check: in Options, Preferences, Real Tracks, there is a Verify button in the lower right to see if all files are in the right place. You're not using a custom file location, are you? (same dialog box)

Along the same lines, although you didn't say whether you are using Real Drums, there is a diagnostic tool for that, too, in Options, Preferences, Real Drums. Check the checkbox for Developer Mode. This will produce a text file that would show any errors produced by generating the Real Drums for that song. We used this during beta testing back in around 2007 when Real Drums were new. Be sure to uncheck the box for normal operation.

Incidentally, I am getting these same 2 errors---"Invalid Pointer Operation" AND "Access Violation"----with BOTH BiaB AND RealBand. To summarize, I have done the following:

Complete Uninstall Including RealTrack and RealDrum Sets
Ran Defrag, chkdsk, cleaned registry, followed by reinstall
Restored to factory settings,
Removed Vista Sidebar
Disabled Vista User Account Control
Continually start and restart BiaB/RealBand
Continually reboot computer

Additional note: I have been using BiaB on this computer for at least 1 1/2 years with only minor, easily-solved, occasional problems.

Additional observations:
1. AFTER getting either ONE or BOTH error messages I cannot get the file to work on ANY style, nor am I able to save it other than .MGU.

2. BiaB and some point in my working on the file, just decides on its own to generate a solo track. I go to edit and "undo" only to have it regenerate it time and again.

Indicates that something somewhere has changed.

Any Windows Updates happen between the time that the programs worked okay and now? You could try to rollback to a Restore Point before the updates and see.

Any changes made to soundcard drivers? (Sometimes soundcard drivers can become corrupted, answer to that one is to reinstall the card using the same driver install overtop.)

Install any new programs?

I would think something like that must be the culprit...

Yes, I did rollback to an earlier Restore Point to when i KNEW BiaB was okay---to no avail. Anyway, by jove, I think I found it. Check this out:

The problem seems to occur when the “Mandolin, Rhythm Bluegrass Doc EV 100, #599” RealTrack is used, which is the case in the style I was working with. I selected various other RealTracks and my problem disappeared. Went back and tried “#599” and had the same problems again. BTW, I noticed that in the “Instrument” column in “Assign RealTracks to Track” that EVERY Mandolin RealTrack has “<No Patch Change> (0)”. That may be significant to someone in solving what I believe to be a glitch in the #599 RealTrack, although there seems to not be a problem with one of the other Mandolin RealTracks I chose. Incidentally, I have not tried all RealTracks yet.

I still have NO IDEA why once the error occured the file would no longer work even with other various style choices. I can only guess that the file had somehow become corrupt after receiving the error.

At any rate, you have all been so helpful, and the upside here is that I have a wonderfully clean, functional machine. LOL

Thanks so much!

Hi Janice

Great to see that you have had some success and you may well have spotted the cause - I notice here also that all the Mandolin Realtracks have No Patch changes against them and they are the only ones without an instrument name

Although that does not explain how it worked ok for Matt - I have just used RT 599 Mandolin in a tune and it also works fine

Matt said he doesn't have any bluegrass RealTracks loaded up. So he was checking out the file, which--logically, (if I truly have discovered the problem) worked fine, because it did not encounter #599.

Oops----well, I overlooked the fact that you said 599 DIDN'T cause you problems . . all I can now say is . . . hmmmmmmm?!? At this point, that is the most intelligent remark I can make! LOL

Yes, correctly stated, I did not test the bluegrass Real Track style, only the basic song file.

You might contact PG Music and ask them to give you a download link to get style #599 again. Maybe the file you have is corrupt.
