Hi Guys
I just finished recording a tune which I am hoping to post here, maybe Saturday.
While listening to it playing back,I got the impression there was background noise in there somewhere. I have listened to my setup and can't hear anything so I am thinking it must be the backing track I am using.
Does anyone know of a Noise Removal Plug-In ,preferably free,at least to try,so I can find out where the problem is.
Thanks
Alan

Post a sample of the problem file for analysis first.
Best way to eliminate noise is at the source, vs after the fact.
I may be able to pinpoint the real problem if I can get a sample for analysis. mp3 at 128 or 160 is fine.

Per a tip from Mac some time ago, I sometimes send a wav file to Audacity to clean up noise. It seems to work well for me.

alan, one that i like is 'cool edit 96' its a little long in the tooth but the nr function is very good. http://www.threechords.com/hammerhead/download.shtmlthe download is limited to two functions at a time. you start by grabbing a short clip of 'noise only' then apply the resultant noise profile to the entire .wav

I was going to suggest Cool Edit since I use it in the current form, called Adobe Audition. It has great noise reduction capabilities. I didn't know Cool Edit is still available. Thanks, Don.

Alan, As Mac suggests - post a snippet. Can you isolate the noise to a particular track in your mix? Guitar amps/tracks are notorious. So are mic channels with improper gain staging. Let's assume that it is a track or two. Have you tried a noise gate plugin on those tracks? If not, do you know how noise gates work? If not, here's a decent article on it in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise_gatePay attention to the first section primarily as well as the figure to the right of the first section. I can't recall whether PG products have a noise gate process or not. I think they do. Should you need one, here's a really simple little one from Graham Yeadon which does the trick for me. http://www.gvst.co.uk/ggate_manual.htmThat link is to the on-line manual. The only difference between Graham's 3 controls and that in the Wikipedia article is that Graham's 'Fade' control is analogous to the Wikipedia 'Hysteresis' parameter description. If you can isolate it to a track or two, in a mix with several tracks, taking care of the noise on a track by track basis is always the preferred way to go than trying to apply some kind of noise reduction process across a 2 track mixdown. Go back to the tracks, jack! As Mac points out, if you can re-record after finding the source of your noise, that's an even better way to go. -Scott

I liked the noise removal tool in Cool Edit/Adobe Audition. It allowed you to take a sample of a noise pattern. If recording something, you might have some noise after the song is over which you can take the sample from. The program will analyze the noise pattern, and then try to extract this pattern from the music (and remove it).
This works best if the noise is a repetitive pattern, of course.

Yes Cool Edit 2000 works well also. Just a little trick I used in desperation once. May be usefull. I recorded a Steel Player and discovered after the fact that his volume pedal was scratchy. As you know a Steel Player uses that pedal A LOT. I could not for the life of me find a section with just noise to sample. I sat there thinking and looked down at an old Pioneer receiver that i was about to refurbish. Needed new bulbs, a good cleaning and all of the pots were dirty and scratchy. I hooked her up and recorded me moving the pots around. I used that as my sample and applied the tool to the Steel and Voila.
