After loading a file and pressing the Play icon I get all the time a message together with a popup:

Unable to use midi output driver (beginning of message)

Output driver is installed properly but is currently in use by another program (first text line in popup)

I already followed up the tip: http://www.pgmusic.com/techfaq17.htm#80 and unchecked all sw synths and configured the Roland VSG DXI synth, but it has the same result.

After pressing the cancel button in the popup, the replay starts normally.

Please help

Well, you could try the Opts menu, Return to Factory Settings command and hit the second button down, which resets not only the main program but the soundcard and synth settings also.

Hi,

There seems to be at least two areas of potential problem-

1. Use of ASIO drivers chosen in more than one open program ( I have had many problems using ASIO drivers but none with MME except for the latency which does not affect my use)

2. The grabbing of drivers when two programs with the same are used in a session

We have had success by these actions -

3. Complete closedown - wait 20 seconds and boot

4. Select ASIO drivers for one program and MME for the other

5. When the message shows you can choose an alternative driver for that session

6. Also one problem cleared itself after a Diskclean - Defrag and Registry clean and compaction

This seems to be a conflict rather than a bug in BIAB

This indeed seems to be the case. I have worked with all sorts of music programs (Finale, Reason, Ableton, LINE6) involving different audio drivers and setups and I am really dissappointed with BIAB.

I just bought BIAB 2010 and this issues is still present there.

I don't use any midi devices, just the DXi synth and MME Audio.

What helped for me is to install Midi Yoke and select one of it's outs as Midi Out.

The other problem that can be making things go awry is the UAC. It can get set one way during the install of some part of the program and it screws things up. I played a midi file the other day outside of band in a box and I tried 20 things to get Band in a Box to behave. Turns out whatever was in that midi file would only clear the problem after a reboot. None of the other actions worked at all. I've had lots of weird problems relating to taking the external hard drive and moving it between systems, it expects to see certain device in certain places etc. Remember Band in a Box just sends the music, it's YOUR output devices that have to actually do the work.

I have 3 systems, one Dxi and mme (aspire netbook xp) , one with Ketron and usb sound to a Bose system (Vista 64) , and another with XP, external soundblaster and Dxi. All work fine, but don't plug stuff into different USB ports and move things around, that can cause all kinds of grief. Moving the USB drive from Vista to XP made life very very difficult, so I quit doing that.

If you're getting the "MIDI Driver installed properly but in use by another program..." error, there's an easy fix... If you download the Loopbe1 driver from nerds.de, you can use that as your MIDI output driver. Just make sure you have your DXi synth turned on, or you won't get any MIDI sound.

You don't actually want to use the driver itself, it just gives you something to select other than the Wavetable... works every time.
