There's so much to this I don't know if I'll ever get it .I found the page that you can buy real tracs mostly 29 bucks each .I really would like a couple of Brent Mason ones to suite my style, mind you there all good .When you pick intro at say 5 beats ,can you stick the Brent Mason guitar in there to make the intro ? And also let's say you pick the steel guitar, it runs all through the song so can you save it for let's say just to come in the chorus ?Thanks Louis

Yes, mostly. Use the F5 key and mute or unite an instrument at any measure.
Once you see how that works, we can talk about the pickup.

As far as intro's and such things.... sometimes the RT will generate a pickup of a note or two.... but you can always use audio editing tools to do whatever you need. Most of us here use some other DAW... (aka: digital audio workstation or in layman's terms, recording software) with which to do our editing. In a DAW, it's really easy to bring things in and out as you choose. Listen to my music and that of the others here to see what can be done with BB/RB and the real tracks when edited and mixed in a DAW. I bring things in and out as fills between vocal phrases and then of course in the intro, solos, and the endings.

So, by this comment it seems like I may be banging my head to keep trying to make RT do a simple pickup, I.e. Banjo... 2...3...4.. Lead in to the first chord. This is so common as a kick off for bluegrass tunes. I have been unable to figure out how to auto-gen this. I have RT 2014.
I have tampered with copy/paste a phrase from a solo track, but the result has been clunky at best. I would just like to make the start of a song less abrupt. If using Audacity (my DAW) is what it will take, maybe I should stop hacking away in Real Band to get this?

There's a bunch of ways to do this..... my method is but one.
You can also experiment with adding a measure at the beginning of the song.... use the tools to mute everything else for that one measure and let the banjo or whatever play that first measure as the pickup.
Using the right tools to accomplish the job makes it easier to do, but just like anything, the more you practice and work and experiment and do, the better you become at doing the audio editing.

Thanks! I will give that a go. Hopefully one of the solo tracks will make an appropriate intro. That may still sound weird tho, since then everyone will start playing on the second measure. I will enter the same chord in both the first and second measures to see how that sounds.
I don't mind adding pickup notes in DAW. I just don't know a good source for those intros. I am also thinking I might get a set of appropriate bluegrass licks in midi, but will need to work on dubbing over those with real instrumentation.

You can get around that by using a drum fill to transition out of the intro and into the full band. So, for example if you want a four bar intro with just acoustic guitar then the full band comes in at bar five you could enter it as |D.g |D.g |F.g G.g|D.g D.dg| And have a part marker to start bar five. Drums will start playing a fill on beat three of bar four, quite effective, I've done this many times.

You can also do a full stop from the intro, silence for a split second, then into the song.
You can also copy a lick from inside the song and paste that instrument where needed. I have used the copy/paste a number of times.... line it up and it sounds perfectly placed. And no one recognizes it later on in the song because it might even be muted where it originally occurred.
The only limit to what you can do is YOUR imagination. Having the right tools just makes it easier to accomplish.

I'd just use the four or the five chord for the first measure and then use RB to generate Multiriffs until I heard something that might work. Also try making the first measure a B section so it plays something different that settles/resolves into the 1 of bar two .. I've done this a number of times, I'll post a link in a few minutes. Edit: This one uses Mandolin instead of Banjo (banjo is later in song) but same concept, a few bars of B section leading into A for intro .. http://masteringmatters.com/stuff/UrbnM1bc.mp3 Sorry, closest thing to bluegrass I've done in recent years, but concept is the same. I'm pretty sure I used the stock bluegrass ending on this, as far as style, though for RTs the bass was SmoothFunk and the Drums were Grunge .. harmonica was just some solo harmonica I found. (from memory) I've done the 2.3.4. lead in, but the only example I can think of used drums. Again, same concept; in RB generate the part you want, using Multiriff if it helps
