Hi,
I was looking at the Ketron SD2 or SD4 and settled on the SD4 since it has a built in USB interface. My current machine where I'm running Power Tracks and BIAB is using Windows 2000. This has worked fine with my Roland XV-2020 via USB but Win2K barfs big time when the Ketron SD4 is plugged in.
The SD4 works great under Linux via USB so it is not likely that this is a Ketron issue. I was wondering if anyone else had tried the SD4 under Windows 2000 and if so what success you had with it. In my case it blue screen of deaths Win2K every time. Win2K does see the SD4 USB device, but then dies.
My other alternative is to use an M-Audio USB to MIDI interface which is supposed to support Win2K, but I was really hoping to avoid needing to do that.

I can't say specifically about the SD4 but i've got a couple of USB synth boxes that are fine. They all came with specific drivers.The driver install may be the issue. Although Win2K provides class compliant drivers for many devices the SD4 and Win2K may be too far removed chronologically to be supported. Get in touch with www.ketronusa.com and see if there's a Win2K driver available.

SD-4 is Class Complaint and needs no drivers. There are no drivers written specifically for it and there should not need to be. Please consult this recent thread from the BIAB forum where another user found out that a completely different USB device, a Logitech Quickcam, was preventing his system from reconizing his SD4's USB connect properly: SD4 and USB problem solved Don't know if that is your exact problem or not, but I did not have any problem with my SD4, just plugged it in to my XP SP3 computer and the USB was automatically recognized. I don't have a Quickcam. --Mac

To say it needs no drivers is misleading. You know it needs drivers it's just not supposed to need proprietary ones. This is an excerp from MS and I'll also post a link to the 1090 problems with win2K and USB: Bad or Missing Device Driver Windows 2000 supplies class device drivers for a number of USB devices. When a USB device is plugged in, it should be loaded and configured without ever requesting a device driver (provided that it fits within the defined and supplied class drivers). If it prompts for a device driver, check with the manufacturer of that device to determine if a driver is available. The fact that a device works in Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 does not mean that it works with Windows 2000. After you load the device driver, if you receive an error message stating that the driver has not been signed, consider that driver suspect. It means that Microsoft has not been able to verify that the driver you have supplied is fully compatible with Windows 2000. Because of this, Microsoft has no way of fixing the device problem short of getting a signed driver from the manufacturer. Check the event log for errors relating to any of the following components: Hidclass.sys, Hidusb.sys, Usbhub.sys, Usbd.sys, Uhcd.sys, or Openhci.sys. The device may have attempted to insert replacements to the Windows device driver stack, which could cause the entire bus to become unstable. http://support.microsoft.com/search/defa...1131&range=

Yes, in theory no proprietary device drivers should be required. But the Win2K implementation of usbaudio is shall we say a bit weak. I'll do some more digging and for grins try another old system I have with Win2K on it. I don't have any webcam drivers installed on the problematic machine, but there are a couple of other things installed that do use USB. Hmmm.. now that I think of it one of them is for a Logitech universal remote control. I'll try removing that USB driver although it would be less likely that one would interact with the usbaudio class driver.
The SD4 operates fine under Linux, and I have reports that it does work with Windows XP, so if I need to I'll retire the Win2K box and replace it with a Windows XP system.
